This gets all the more interesting ... my first impression was DirtyDave was not really a bad guy and with a little education in etiquette he could turn into a decent member, but now I am beginning to have doubts about that....
It did strike me as conceivable that someone else who works at the same office as DirtyDave might have opened a new account to express his outrage at the way poor innocent DirtyDave was being treated, and might have omitted to mention his relationship with DirtyDave, and though it is highly unlikely that anyone would have exactly the same characteristically incoherent writing style and the same pattern of errors in spelling and grammmar, it was worth looking into before I posted that they are the same person. I figured I'd spare everybody the boring technical details last time, but now he's denying the fraud they've become interesting technical details.
Some computers have a full-time net connection with a constant IP address, and if someone else used the same computer at a different time, at an office, say, they would both post from the same IP. Most of us, like DirtyDave, use computers that are not online 24/7, though, and every time we log on to the net we get an IP address assigned for the session, which will usually have a different ending each time we log on.

Note his first post starting the thread on the morning of the 18th he posted from IP Number 63.202.23.2 but his post early the next morning is from IP Number 63.202.20.57 and when he logged on again that afternoon he got the IP Number 63.202.23.99
>>>Now, this is some good sleuthing, Cougar! The isp info is good. If this is a dial up acct., then a new ip will be granted almost every time one dials up. That it wasn't doled out - DHCP is the protocol used for us network geeks! - then it was all done from the same session at that time.<<<
By the way, all of those IPs resolve to the same server at pacbell.net DirtyDave and NuclearWinter65 both put AOL email addresses in their profiles (different AOL addresses, but AOL gives their members several email addresses each and allows and even encourages them to play games with identity -- though this kind of game is frowned on even in AOhelL).
>>>Email addresses aren't necessarily indicative of anything. I use my Yahoo acct. as my primary, and I'll never use my isp's acct. except for incidentals since my isp may come and go. I started on PacBell but felt the "need for speed," and went to AT&T @Home. Using an email acct. from a major portal that's free seemed much more stable than an isp's. Lots of other people do the same. You don't have to give out a new email address each time you change isp's, and you can get to it from most anywhere on the internet.<<<
Then DirtyDave posted 09-19-2000 02:30 PM IP Number 63.202.23.99 and 59 minutes later NuclearWinter65 posted 09-19-2000 03:29 PM IP Number 63.202.23.99 Why did it take him nearly an hour to open a new account under a different name and write a short post from a disinterested observer expressing his outrage at the way poor innocent DirtyDave was being treated? Maybe it took him 45 minutes of concentrated thought to think up the brilliantly clever subterfuge?
Then 3 minutes later NuclearWinter65 started a new thread, this one, with a duplicate of that post, and 12 minutes after that DirtyDave replied with the post that begins, "Thanks for the knid words NW, but don't need anyone to stick up for me" -- still using IP Number 63.202.23.99 He made two more posts in that session, beginning, "Nope, not one in the same. Soory to dsiappoint you" and "Hows the dog grooming busines going?" The first post in that session was at 02:30 PM and the last at 05:10 PM. The next day he logged on again and thus got a different IP to post the message beginning "Well slap me in the butt and call me Sally!!! I am already getting hate mail form morons."
There are ways to avoid leaving this kind of evidence if you know a little bit about the way the net works, but even then you can seldom fool anybody on the net. Besides the obvious smell of a new member suddenly appearing to do things like defend someone no one else seems to have any urge to defend, everyone has a characteristic writing style -- even people who can spell and understand the basic rules of grammar have a distinctive style of writing that is hard to disguise, and with semi-literates like most of the dorks who play this game it's rather more obvious than the usual fingerprint analogy -- more like a large assortment of conspicuous scars and tattoos. It isn't just two usernames saying the same things who both misspell words and write incoherently; it's two usernames saying the same things with the same pattern of misspellings and incoherence.
