The Buck 100 Series Appreciation/Photo Thread

mbjannusch, wonderful collection and display! Basically, it's a Buck time capsule.

jb, thanks for the 103 photos. There is something about the 103 that conjures up thoughts of hunting and camping in the Northwoods. One of Buck's best looking knives

Stoneworks, thank you for that group photo, it clears allot of issues for me, Valuable! I'm having trouble my "memory" with trying to figure out what 100 I had recieved in 1978 but it was a [earlier] 100 its definetly not a 118 to much upsweep at the tip. Sheath was a Flap Over and it was over 5.5 inches for sure....

Mule, it's gotta be a 121. It fits your description. No?

Yes! TAH, I do believe you got it! I was up all night reviewing knifes and the one I kept coming up with was the 121.........I'm going with that to procure one! and hope I'm right. LOL Thats a beauty TAH thank you for posting that photo an trying to help me with my dilemma???? LOL I seemed to remember the blade was very "plain jane" but very straight with out much upsweep! over 5.5 inches and sheath was a flap over.

TAH what year is that one you posted do you know?

Hey mule,

The 121 pictured above is not my knife. I just pulled a photo from the internet for reference. I'm guessing it's from the mid 70s to mid 80s. Good luck on your search. Let us know if you find one!

thank you again for the effort....an will definitely add it to the 100's Once I find an procure one.....did you happen to see the marking on the blade? like
BUCK
121
U.S.A.
Or if what inverted.......

I just posted a new thread on a 121 I just saw. Its a 121 with a Military Handle according to the seller......1986 its made out of Neoprene/Rubber....since Rubber is barely used anymore for anything! they only add 3-6% real rubber to compounds now....race tires etc are the testing grounds for compounds today. I worked for VIBRAM they only use real rubber in the 3-6% range to be added to compounds usually for U.S. Military contracts.

Sorry, I didn't. I just grabbed the first photo I saw. I pay more attention to the spacers and sheath. I prefer the versions with 4 burgundy Micarta spacers (2 at the guard, 2 at the pommel) and a flap sheath.

TAH thanks for that tip too! about the spacers etc...didn't think about that either. LOL Much appreciated! I'm pretty sure the spacers were black on my knife.....How many colors do they have
besides marron? & black I thought I saw a tan?

DeSotoSky, wow! nice collection....by the way what is Kraton? is it a form of Nylon? or Neoprene etc...does anyone know?

Just Google 'kraton' a lot comes up. Here you go. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kraton_(polymer)
The 121's were made withred hard fiber spacers, maroon micarta spacer and black phelonic spacers. With the last one the number was changed. Not 2+2. Instead it was 2 in the front and one in the rear. Then one in the front and one in the rear. DM (I hope I stated that right)

Basically, a synthetic rubber developed by Shell Oil in the 50's. Importantly for us, when it gets wet, it becomes grippy, not slippy..... :p

Actually thought KRATON was a BUCK thing.
I use to run a extruder..........for REED PLASTICS & POLYMERS Holden MA 1977-78 I extruded these polybutadiene, polyisoprene, polystyrene, that make up the KRATON also many others like "Irgastab" I hated running that stuff was equivelant to tear gas....LOL My favorite was Nylon. My extruder ran strands into Pelletiziers to be drummed for Plastic Injection Molding Machines allot of "Ciba Geigy" materials.

Thats why I was asking what the handles were made of.....thank you DM & you too DesotoSky......thank you!

It just came to me the knife I had that I thought was black spacers I clearly remember now, they were marroon micarta I remember thing at the time one day I was cleaning it I saw they were reddish brown and semi translucent........so does that give me a year?

TAH said this: I pay more attention to the spacers and sheath. I prefer the versions with 4 burgundy Micarta spacers (2 at the guard, 2 at the pommel) and a flap sheath.

So that means you can date the knife by the color of the spacers too?

Thanks for posting this. I knew about the 639, 619 and 620 but had no idea these other models were offered. Guess I need to start reviewing the catalog archives. Was there any difference between the black and green versions other than the obvious handle color?

No difference. Casual observation to me is that the Olive Drab (OD) color might be a little less common but not rare. I've seen OD only on the 619 and 639. Interestingly the 619 is named differently for the 2 colors, OD called GameMate and the Black (BK) one called WoodsMate. There were some 639's made without the saw on the spine and are less common. What must be very rare are the 619's in other colors (prototypes?) Brown, Green, Gray, and Orange. I've heard of them but never seen one. Back to the 100 series show....
