The Buck 100 Series Appreciation/Photo Thread

I could just be plain ot wrong that the blade was longer.....even thought I aquired that 121 last night, My gut tells me it was the 105 maybe 60's too...BuckMe's photo of his 105 sure looks like it.....DM whats the official term for the tip of BuckMe's 105 blade above? that also threw me off! I was'nt sure if it had that or not. On that I could of been wrong too.....

well anyways thanks for all the DM.....

I couldn't find it but someone recently ask when did Buck began using the 3 word 'Buck' on the sheath snaps? I found it in my 94 catalog. But Buck may use those picture for 1-2yrs.. So, I'm thinking 1993. Perhaps at the time they switched to 420HC steel. I don't have that catalog so could someone verify this. Thanks, DM

Mule, I was browsing the Buck Knives in a local gunshop recently (I bought a yellow Delrin handle 303) - the blade shape on the current 102 & 105 are very different looking to me (straighter) than the old versions. This is a 105 I bought in 1976 (PX at Aberdeen Proving Ground MD) the blade measures just a tad over 5". I don't have one of the current ones. OH

I looked this up in Joe Houser's hand out information sheets from his lecture on the 100 series from Buck's 20yr. reunion. He states the flap over sheaths began in 1967. Perhaps some can be found as early as late 1966. In Me's photo; that is the original sheath. I have that knife in my collection a 1963 model and it has that sheath. His may be a little newer. If he would show a pommel photo I'd know. DM

Thanks David. I'm sure the answer to my next question has been discussed and is buried here in the archives, but without going into a ton of detail, what's the quick history on Buck sheaths from the 60s into the 80s. Were they outsourced at first and then eventually made by Buck in the Buck factory? For example, who made Me's sheath and who made the flap sheath starting in '67?

"Sheaths:
A. Angeles Souvenir—late 1962 to late 1967. Thin leather, BUCK on snap, no rivets, no model number.
B. Atcheson Leather—late 1967 to early 1969. Leather, BUCK on flap, Model #, tooling lines and dimple rivet on belt loop.
C. Buck leather shop—started early 1969.
1) Leather, BUCK on snap & flap, tooling lines on belt loop. Used maybe 2 years?
2) Leather, BUCK on snap and flap, plain belt loop, model # on back."

Joe H. put Atcheson sheaths made during 68. They had no Buck on the snap and no model # on the back. I have one of these in my collection with a early 105 which is stamped Buck*. A different looking 105, I'll include a photo. Supposedly paired up correctly. So, by that we'd have to include them in 67. The sheaths were brought 'in house' in 69. So, your dates are close. Of a morning I don't have much time to pull and read my notes. DM

thanks OH, I aquired mine in 1979, but it was a earlier knife, The more I think about what it was....I think it was this knife in the photo, even the sheath look's "sometimes I would hang of my KELTY or JANSPORT packs when back packing on the Mts do to the waist belt on the [packs] ridding on the sheath, its right for the proportion's in my head that I remember....and the swedge at the tip I think through me a curve ball, I must of didn't remember it, Just learned that term ~SWEDGE~ and ~Trailing Point~ from DM.

Thank you OH for posting this photo & jumping into the fray in my quest of sorting out which nife I had......LOL

have a great day!

Thank you David for straightening me out on the terms ~SWEDGE~ or in the Dictionary ~SWAGE~ & ~TRAILING POINT~ an that great link!

a big THANK YOU David....

Here are some early one liners 63 -66 (105, 119, 120) with there respected sheaths

gesea, that 105 is pretty straight, an thats how I remember the knife, DM showed me a side by side of 105 & 121 an they looked exactly the same except for length.

thanks for posting that photo gesea, 'have a great day!

ItsTooEarly, Thank you for sharing that beauty! I'm hoping to god the 121 I just [aquired] will be the one I believe was the right look & fit......otherwise its back to the drawing board & its probably a 105, an that I was wrong about the lenght being over 5" or 5 1/2 inches. I kept looking at ruler in my hand and trying to visualize back to 78-79....LOL the 105 kept looking to short in my mind.

thank you for trying to help! nice shot! right to the point! LOL

gesea, I'll say one thing right now, it was great move for the BUCKfamily not to farm those sheaths out anymore! they not only established their reputation with their knives.... but their sheaths too! Built tough an will last you a life time! with heavy leather an stitching an hardware.

hkingdom, nice set! thanks for the share! I just saw the same set, but not, they were Stags. My mind started turning....LOL
