The Cinguedea, One of the Most Effective Personal Weapons Of All Time

Forged in Fire

It's Television. And not real good TV at that. That moronic, "It will kill." line has probably done more damage to your rights to carry a blade than anything else on television in the past 10 years. A pencil will kill, but we don't need a self righteous audience watching and thinking about how knives should be banned because they might hurt little Jimmy.

And if you think sword design peaked in the 16th Century Europe you're wrong. There's a heck of a lot of scholarly material out there showing how personal defense edged weapons continued to develop and kill people after that. Go forth and read, and quit letting someone who's whole aim is to make money influence your opinions.

I think the op is just making for good conversation on swords which I appreciate

I’ve never been a dagger or double edged sword fan and my primary interest was Japanese style blades but I’ve played with a good Smatchet of late and it really performs well

I've been hearing that garbage since the first season. Show me one incident where "Eet Weel Keel" had ANY influence on ANY law or court case. Holy crap, people, this ISN'T the 50s, where you had 3 channels, and the entire family gathered around the tv on Tuesday night for some good wholesome entertainment. Your 9 year old kid's video game has worse language than this. Yeah, the one YOU probably bought him! And with 350+ channels available, it's not hard to find something less disturbing. People pick and choose what they want to watch, nobody is twisting anyone's arms these days. If you don't want to watch it you either change the channel, leave the room, or pick up your phone. I'd bet 99% of people just change the channel.

Once upon a time, people in this country had these things called balls, and men were actually proud to be able to have their own opinions. The whole world was jealous. Look where we are now. Afraid that someone is going to see a tv show, and use it to take away YOUR right to own a knife. THEY DON'T EVEN TAKE CARS AWAY FROM DRUNK DRIVERS!!!!! Get real....

I think the show has been very positive for the Blade arts especially the forged blade which needed a bump

Knowing many of the Competitors and judges all I’ve heard besides the usual reality type sow stuff is positive

Nice!

Who made it?

I've actually got my eye on something WAY more practical, a Swiss Halberd. Now to devise a sheath for it so I can go to Wal Mart with it strapped under my pants.

Easy, just tell everyone you have Permanent Erection Syndrome (PES)

You realize a Halberd is longer (or should I say taller) than you are?

Vertically, that is.

The people who were offended by the " it wheel keel " should not be appeased or compromised with . They will never suffer the possession of anything THEY consider a weapon or your basic right of self defense . They want the world to be a "safe zone " where we are all essentially treated like supermax prisoners or the criminally insane .

First, I want to apologize to the OP for this thread going off the rails.

That being said, those of you who are climbing all over your "balls" are seriously missing the point. The scope of the show is to advance the forged blade. The producers have all the opportunity in the world to provide a positive picture of knife making. Instead they focus on the sensational. Is there anyone on this forum who can't figure out that a blade that's just cut a pig carcass in half will kill? NO? Then why say something that makes you look stupid? I lost all respect for the guy at that point.

The show has reached the depths of the other "reality" shows on History. Right up there with Paranormal Studies and Alien Chasers. Too bad.

Just think what they could do if they actually did a show that showed making a sushi knife that could work the counter all day and still cut translucent slices off a tuna. Or a hunting knife that could skin a Buffalo without sharpening. Or a French Kitchen knife that could work all day in a production kitchen and still be razor sharp. Hell, they could just use the tests for Journeyman Smiths and improve on what they do. Instead they focus on stuff that has little or no value in today's world for 99.8% of the knife using population.

Except that most actual fans of the show mostly tune in for the big exotic ancient weapons and the very kind of testing that others find so offensive . The show you imagine would be cancelled in no time for lack of interest .

European sword design has a history of evolution. Society changes, war changes, armor changes, so the sword and other weapons changed. In asia there was less change and societes were more resistant to drop tradition.

Cinquedea was short-lived. It was short compared to weight. When fencing developed in to more thrust centered rapier and later smallsword were the main weapons.

At the same time lived the more cut and thrust style used by the military. This had influences from both earlier Bolognese school and later saber from east Europe. Styles interconnected and evolved.

"The cinquedea enjoyed a brief period of popularity in the 15th and 16th centuries. Ewart Oakeshott, in his book Archaeology of Weapons, states that "(b)efore about 1460 or 1470 it seems to have been unknown, and there are no specimens which can be said with certainty to have been made after about 1520". Only achieving popularity in Italy, and unlike other fashions of the Italian Renaissance, cinquedeas did not seem to spread to the rest of Europe."

I've talked with several competitors from FIF as well, and the thing they all agreed on is that it is a competition/game show, just like the cooking shows. It's NOT about advancing the art of the forged blade, it's about drawing in an audience. And 'It will kill' is just a tag line, no different from "I'll be back", or "Get to the choppah" for Arnold. If you don't like it, don't watch it. But don't look down on me if I do.
