The fall snark thread

So, my mom is addicted, like most people apparently, to reality shows.

I don't get it either. My wife watches a couple of the singing/dancing ones but she doesn't get all worked up over them... they're mostly background noise while she's doing paperwork or something. The ones with kids creep me out... seems like a lot of pressure for a youngster.

The one reality show we both enjoy is "Alaska: the Last Frontier". There's not much made-up drama BS and the people are actually likeable. The Dad Otto cracks me up. They sure go through a lot of ammo without ever seeming to hit much, though. They seem to embrace the "spray and pray" method. :p

Other than that most of our TV watching is cartoons and football. 90% of everything else on the tube is just awful... terrible warmed-over sitcoms and people just being jerks to each other.

I have a roommate that is way into The Voice. Sometimes I can hear here yelling at the tv from down the hall with my door closed.

There was one I caught a few times call Duets that I didn't hate. They all had really good voices and I don't recall any fake drama BS.

See thats what im talking about guys!! Thanks everyone.

I was going to spend 30 on a sheath that may or may not have worked, instead i spent 30 on a knife with a leather sheath, even if it doesnt fit my other knife i still have a knife and sheath that goes together and seems to have good reviews.

If the leather sheath fits my other knife Im not sure what ill do with the sheath-less rodan, but i guess that just depends on how i like it come tuesday when it gets here.

Then you'll have to buy a kydex sheath for it.:D

Possible, more likely it will be added into a trade somewhere though.

Im still debating if im going to throw the Esee version DPX hest into the exchange.

I got a heavy bowie on the way but after some reading I see its not 1095, so i still need a 1095 chopper.

1085 is pretty close to 1095 if the HT is right.
you do know Ontario changed the RTAK2 to 1/4" thick 5160 as well - would hate to see you order one of those thinking it was 1095.

Yes i need 5160 in 9"+ too, thats what i want the rtak2 for. That would had sucked if i got it for 1095 though LMAO.

And im sure the 1085 and 1095 is pretty close but for my comparisons i need 1095, but ill add 1085 to the mix now as well and see what differences i see in it compared to 1095 if any

Yeah I get an involuntary extra hour at work tonight . I'll just add it to the rest of the involuntary hours I've put in this week.

BK9. You need and BK9. You can't not have a 9.

When did they go to .25"? Might have to get another one if they're .25 now...

Clocks get set back an hour tonight.

Yeah I'm at work too. 14 hours total tonight...

Let's ignore quirky stuff like hamons for the sake of discussion. Assuming they're all HT'ed properly, and to the same Rc hardness, and ground to the same geometry/level of sharpness... in all honesty if you can tell the difference between 1095, 1084, 1080, 1075 and 5160 in normal use, you're a better man than I. The plain fact is, they all work very well

I have only tried 1095 out of the 10 series and i have tried 5160 in my RD4, but I do indeed notice a difference in these steels during my comparisons as far as edge retention, 1095 holds the better edge on smaller knives but 5160 may be better in a chopper due to the added strength I still need to run test on a 5160 blade 9" or bigger..

WW - I have to agree with James on this.
The difference you're seeing in edge retention between 1095 & 5160 is based on blade hardness and edge geometry, not anything to do with the steel.
Also keep in mind that Kabar 1095cro-van is not the same steel as ESEE or TOPS 1095, and they are tempered to a different RC.

My point is, you simply can't compare different geometries and different heat-treats and expect to get a "feel" for different steels. 1095 and 5160 are not nearly as different as people make them out to be. 1095 Cro-Van does have an advantage, for certain... the little splash of extra chromium and vanadium help it harden more thoroughly and develop fine carbides that definitely help edge-retention, without sacrificing toughness.

5160 with a thin edge and run at 60Rc will outcut and stay sharp longer than any "super-steel" at 56Rc with a poor grind. Same geometry and same hardness? Fuggetaboutit, Elmax or CTS-XHP or CPM-M4 will kick 1095 and 5160's butts all over the field, all week long in slicing and chopping contests... unless you get down to actually prying with them. And even then... the differences are not as great as we might assume.

The differences between specific alloys within the same class are often vastly overblown, and are to some degree the function of nothing more than marketing. Keep in mind, I'm saying this from the point of view of a self-professed steel geek who uses both "simple" steels and "super" steels. :)

Yes i understand what your saying james, i do all this just for my own knowledge to see what i prefer personally. Its nothing official and might not prove anything to anyone but i enjoy testing the way i do and it shows me which knives perform better for me anyway.

I dont really care about marketing, as everyone can readily see i buy knives from all types of companies and all types of steels and go off only my own results. And just because it works for me doesnt mean its better for anyone else but me. Now I know heat treating and geometry and the main things but i cant have each company make a set of knives exactly the same for me to test so i have to go off what i can get to get a basic idea for each steel. But i try and get them as similar as i can for my own testing.

but If i take 2 knives of 2 different steels and put one of my edges on them then commence to testing how long they stay sharp..... the one that stays sharp the longest wins. they are tested back to back cutting and slicing the same things, so in my eyes it shows me which "knife" in which steel works better for me in my needs.

So a 1/4 inch rd4 and 1/4 bk2 tested out and the bk2 held its edge better, the edge i put on it, so then AFTER my test i read 5160 VS 1095 and found there are reasons 1095 would hold its edge longer, then i learned 5160 might be better in a chopper due to being tougher, so now i want to run some personal test for myself. but i need a large 1095 blade and a large 5160 blade, then ill put my edge on it and test it my way to see which work out better for me or if i notice any differences. If nothing else it will be fun.

I really think i learn WAY WAY more doing my test the way i do. I never post my comparisons because i know lots of people would judge how i perform them and tell me what im doing wrong, or why they dont think it proves anything, but the truth is i dont care what other people think works best, i want to learn what works best for me, and i cant read that online... the only way i can learn that is by testing all the steels/grinds/thicnesses/lengths ect ect.. that I can myself. So little by little thats what im doing.

WOW that was a lot to type and took like half an hour.

So, had an interesting night tonight, involuntarily. The salon that I get my hair done at is opening a second location. Tonight was the grand opening of that location. Well, it was a sausagefest beyond belief but it was pretty mundane until the cops raided the place. Apparently, which I didn't know, drugs are as popular in the barber shop as they are the commercial kitchen.
