The final Snarkdown!

The Chimay Blue is pretty good stuff. I have it a couple times a year as a treat.

Just got back from the beer store and picked up a bottle of that, along with a 4-pack of Goose Island Bourbon County. .

I think that beer was discussed a few days ago. 14.9%ABV!!

Can't wait 'til after work to try my "Congratulations on Taking the Shaft of the Illinois Court System Like a Man" consolation prize.:D

Well, 10$ is cheap for that beer. Called back to ask if they had some left (they had 48 bottles to start with), but everything was gone after half an hour, they said. They would be gone if they asked 20$. They would even have been gone if they had asked $30. They sell for a lot more on the web, and then you still have to pay for shipping. Don't want to sound elitist or anything, but "beer" isn't "beer". Whiskey isn't whiskey. Jack Daniels isn't 10yo Talisker. A Spanish Cava is not a Veuve Cliqcuot. A Stella or Heineken is not a Westvleteren 12. You gotta have 'em to taste the difference though. I sure as hell enjoy myself a good lager like Stella, it's probably the beer I've been drinking the most since I was allowed to. But it's like with everything: you get what you pay for. Sometimes you just want something different, something réally good. You pay for the taste, the craftsmanship, the exclusivity, the brand, the awards it has won (with reason),... Anyway, not going to get in an argument about it, just wanted to share my thoughts on it, and my opinion is: it's worth it. Even though I prefer other (cheaper) trappist beers such as Rochefort 10 even more :)

I have not ventured too far into trappist beers but have enjoyed the ones I've tried.

I agree with you.

That being said, I still enjoy cheap beer once in a while.

Mornin' guys. Just went grocery shopping a bit with my dad. We got to the beverage store, got everything we needed and close to the register there were two cases of... some of you might have guessed it... The elusive Westvleteren 12. Often considered as being the best beer in the world. It's status is enhanced by the limited production and availability. Well, I don't think it took us one second before loading some of them into our shopping cart. At 10+ dollars per bottle a very expensive beer for domestic produced beers, but worth it.
Great start of the day :)

Nice score. I think I read a while back that they started selling it outside the Abbey, or was it being re-sold by the groccery store (which I believe is frowned upon).

How does it compare to something like Trappistes Rochefort 10? Significantly better?

Me too. In fact I just had some after Thanksgiving dinner.

I'm not taking sides, just a little surprised. I don't even want to know what it would cost over here. But to each his own! Heck, I was drinking $200 Scotch last week... mind you, I didn't pay for it... :D

True. Most of the people I know would be shocked that people pay $300+ for a folding knife. There are many things out there I'd not spend serious money on simply because I know I wouldn't appreciate the difference.

I once had some Highland Park, 25 or 30 year, i cant quite remember now, the guy said it was 400 bucks for the bottle and was hard for him to find...and then he poured me a nice glass of it. Id never buy it myself but i appreciated the difference :D It was delicious.

Haha, yes it's a pretty strong one :D It's not an inexpensive one either so it helps when you're essentially drinking about 3 beers worth in the one bottle (more if it's the 22oz bottles).

Oh, and if you REALLY want a potent stout, there's always Dogfish Head's World Wide Stout

dogfishhead-wwstout.jpg

Clocks in around 20% abv. From what I understand that's about as strong as you can possibly brew without distilling. It even varies from batch to batch as they have to stretch the limits of what's possible to get it that far (I think for SA Utopias they actually have to distill it?)

Damn!

We will see how I handle this before making a jump like that. I hope the alcohol taste isn't too overbearing.

Nothing wrong with cheap beers indeed. There are some great ones out there, especially from local breweries here and there. Chimay is indeed a great beer as well. I like it a lot.

Well, you can get beer at the abbey, but there's a long waiting list. Where my dad and I got it from is a local beverage retailer. He got two crates from some guy that pays students to enroll in the waiting list and to get it for him. Apparently he's got a whole business going this way. Indeed frowned upon, but not illegal... Our retailer doesn't earn any money from it, since they just sell at his prices. They only had been able to buy two crates off of him and used it now as promotional offers to draw more people towards their store. It's good advertising that you have it.

As I said in my previous post, Westvleteren 12 is not my favourite but it's top 3. My favourite is in fact Rochefort 10. Can't really describe it but R10 has a fuller taste than WV12 and I appreciate that more. Westmalle and Westvleteren are close seconds for me. To each their own. Some swear by Westvleteren, some don't. I don't, but definitely like to drink one once in a while. Of the Belgian trappist beers, this would be my personal ranking: Rochefort 10>Westvleteren 12 and Westmalle>Chimay>Achel>Orval. And those six rank highly above a lot of other beers imo, apart for Orval. I really dislike that one for some reason.

Highland Park 25. I drank a glass of that one 2 years ago for my 21st birthday. Instantly became my favourite single malt. The guy in the restaurant installed an alarm and safety glass in his cabinet just because of that bottle, he told us then. Really great taste.

Every time I have tried a high alcohol content beer, it taste like crap.. I had a really good Michigan beer last weekend called Bean Picker.. if you like coffee flavor it is amazing.

At first I was thinking, isn't half of your knife making work consist of drinking? Then i realized you are at the day job :p

I know this has probably already been talked about but, did yall hear about Amazon wanting to use drones to deliver packages?? Basically you could choose a 30 minute delivery option and have a drone drop off a package by your front door. They say Amazon will take 5 years or so to get it all up and running but... Imagine... Becker knives to your door in about 30 minutes!

Me and Murph and my buddy Ralph where talking about that last night, I dont get it. What do they just drop sh!t like a bomb and hope it dont come through the windows? do they land in your driveway? Sounds kinda scary to me. you really think that postal service is really big brothers intention with drone tecnology?

This is true. the fact that I cant drink beer at my day job is only about 1% of what I hate about it..................This place sucks! :thumbdn:

In college, I woke up to find my roommate pissing in my laundry basket at the foot of my bed. He swore he was in the bathroom and just needed to go.
Sleep walking or passive aggressive behavior?

Good thing that was you and not Trade.... You took it in stride... Tried to understand... Control your emotions... Blah blah blah...

Dude would be pi$$ing out his ear these days had that been trade's laundry..
He ought to be lighting candles and thanking the diety of his choice it was only you..

Doc

So I fired up the ol' K5 and drove it to the grocery store and I could smell gas. Pulled over and one of the hose clamps was loose and gas was dripping right on the valve cover and running down the engine. Tightened it right up with a screwdriver and everything's fine now. Luckily gas isn't as combustible as one might think. :o

This is bullshit. Let's give more American jobs to foreign made robots.

Great idea!

I need to practice my trap shooting.

Oh no judgement, I just couldn't remember if they officially started selling it outside of the Abbey or not. I can understand why they ask others not to re-sell, but it does allow more people to try it since we can't all line up outside the Abbey.

Sounds like we have similar tastes, Rochefort 10 is possibly my favorite Belgian ale. It's not widely distributed here, but easy enough to find. Orval... eh I'm glad I tried it but have not had it again since. Not a trappist, but I also really like Duchesse De Bourgogne.

Have you ever had the change to try any beers by Unibroue? They are in Quebec and brew exclusively Belgian style, not sure if they distribute in Europe though. They really make some excellent beers, especially the Quads. I'd be curious to know what a *true* Belgian thought of a *N. American* Belgian :D

I do like coffee! Any chance you remember which brewery it was from?

... do they land in your driveway?

Yeah, what they showed on TV was like a little RC helicopter, kinda. It lands and releases the package (no more than 5# and about a cubic foot), then flies back off. Can't wait to see one take out a powerline or cut off some dog or little kid's leg with the rotors. Not to mention FAA air-traffic stuff and the cost of flying an individual package to your house, and flying the empty "drone" back.

Frankly, I think it's 100% pure bullsh... I mean, advertising hype. Remember back in the 70's when they promised we'd all have flying hovercars by the year 2000?
