The final Snarkdown!

In my experience, SAKs aren't THAT sharp/pointy. They usually seem to be a drop/wharncliffe blade.

Yes, but I saw that video of those two poor guys being senselessly murdered with a SAK over in prac tac many moons ago... so pointy enough

My 1st assumption was that it was the small blade on Victorinox Excelsior.

Quick question:

My father asked me if I could get his hunting knife sharpened for him. I took it home to put on the Sharp Maker for a quick edge and found the bevels to be VERY obtuse, rendering the Sharp Maker pretty useless--the stones basically just touch the shoulder of the bevel rather than the actual cutting edge. Is there an easy way to knock down those shoulders and get it to the point where i can use it on the sharpmaker?

All i have is a sharpmaker with white and gray stones and a Norton combo. Any suggestions on how to achieve an effective re-profile with as little headache as possible?

Glue some 400 wet/dry to a paint stirrer and use it like a file.

Hey Daizee, got a question...

Second knife from the right, is that going to be my new 115%?

:D

I had a pretty good afternoon. I braved the remnants of the arctic death that passed through here and went down and drank some excellent beer with Tim Hunt, picked up my beautiful Magua, fondled all the blades he was working on trying to ship out and to top it all off.... Murph wasn't there!

Working on uploading some pictures now.

Sounds like a good day, Jerry.

I did an unsuccessful deer drive with a few hunting buddies and am now cutting my deer up into grinder sized pieces. (save for the catfish and backstraps of course)

Glad to hear you made it home safely Jerry. Always a plaeasure to have you! Glad you liked your knife and also glad Murph missed out! More beer for us! ;)

Thanks, Todd. I had a great time. Thanks for putting up with me. Fortunately it was still warm enough that the roads were just wet.

Thank you--I'll give it a shot. I'm a little nervous about botching the reprofile and screwin up pops' knife, so the help is quite appreciated.

Take it slow and you can ease the shoulder back enough for the sharpmaker to put an edge on it. You won't screw it up.

Forgive my ignorance as I have never used the Sharpmaker, but could you change the angle at which you use it. My understanding is that the stones are set at a certain degree, and the user keeps the knife at a 90 and use downward strokes. Would it be possible to hold the knife at a different angle so you could keep a somewhat more obtuse angle?

I know when I sharpen my dad's knives, I put pretty wide angle on them because he is not necessarily gentle with them in use.

Happy Birthday, Dubz!. They aren't kidding about that AARP stuff. They sent me crap every week until I finally put it all back into the postage paid envelope and wrote: "please remove me from your mailing list" on the application thingy. That is an "old person" trick. Oh...and now you can look forward to your first colonoscopy. Have fun this evening!

Edit: well then, never mind about the AARP stuff, but remember the trick....it works with other mailings, too.

glue the postage paid envelope to a concrete block.

yeah - I proved deer may be smarter than me.
not only did i not see any deer this weekend, I didn't hear any gunshots, either.
on the plus side, it was pretty nice out there with the occasional snowflake fluttering down and no-one but me and the occasional bird.

That's kind of what I'd done before, rather just free-handed it on the the combo stone. I'm hoping by re-profiling it I can get his knife a little slicier for him as well as making quick tune-ups on the sharpmaker a bit easier.

Nooooo!!!
That one's MINE! Not again, you sneaky creep!
That's only 100% anyway. The numbers on the handle read '154cm'.

same blade, different view. Now it's ground:

That's too bad about the unsuccessful hunt, but it is always nice to sit outside and watch nature be. I can think of many worse ways to spend a day or weekend.

Perhaps you should think of a more strategic location for your mineral block.:D

Slicy cuts better, no doubt about it. I agree with trade, sandpaper may be the best course of action. Good luck!

Hasn't someone backed out of a 115% yet?! Jeez! How long does a guy have to wait for a green diamondwood and black micarta 115% hunter in A2 from Rock N Roll Knife and Tool?!

They have diamond rods for the sharpmaker, or I have heard of people wrapping sandpaper around the stones to reprofile

I've seen those on the big river website; I may have to pick up a set. Everyone seems to either like them for feel so-so about them. They could be a nice investment, I really like the SM for maintaining a good edge but it's not a re-profiling machine by any stretch--perhaps the diamond rods will be though.

Happy Birthday, Warrior!

Damn, I didn't realize this place was chock full of geezers.:D

Happy Birthday, Warrior.

Enjoy the spaghetti.

Wish you'd mail me something.
Happy Bday Dubz.

Happy birthday Dubz!!!
Thanks guys, appreciate it. Was nice to have family over, and to eat the best spaghetti ever. Felt sorry for my son though. His girl of 8 1/2 years packed up her stuff last night and left him. Now he's stuck with a house he can't afford, plus it's Christmas time. Gonna be a rough road for a bit, but he'll be better off in the long run. She's way too immature.
