The Flea Market Mung Absolution Thread

Enjoying a nice snow day and decided to peruse flea bay for a spell -- did anyone get a load of the $500 sft used recluse with the "interesting" DIY sharpening job done on it?! I guess to each their own. :D

I don't know, Will. The description on it clearly states that it hasn't been sharpened. :numbness:

Also I think $500 is a fair price for a knife that "features the beautiful white handle with wood and red inlay that is highly sought after by many collectors and knife enthusiasts".

If that blade hasn't been sharpened then someone is really dropping the ball at the Forge.

Man, the Fleamarket is OFF THE HOOK right now! WOW! And there are quite a few at rock bottom prices!

I agreed Will! One of these days I hope to come across a little Scandi or maybe even a Runt. For now, I'm hoping the production Runt comes out soon. :)

So as not to mung up the flea market, I want to send a shout out to Dave (Dcaggie06) regarding his four legged best friend. I hope that all turns out well.

+1

I hope the surgery goes well. I wish I could help, but I can't swing the money for one of those Fiddlebacks.

Yeah, I wish I could swing one of those as well. Best wishes for you and your pal Dcaggie!

After a close look, I think the guy tried to regrind it or something??? You can see the spalting is cut short and on one side you can see 3 different plains along the edge? Quite an ugly job id say.

Thank you all for the well wishes for my best friend. To all a warning: if you want a bulldog, be prepared for times like these. doesnt matter how "pure" blood they are, they have a mountain of health issues. My big boy has been in and out of the vet with allergies, skin infections, cysts, broken teeth, and bladder stones/surgery. i love him more than anything and we're headed for bladder surgery #2, but these dogs are not for the faint of heart. Its been a rollercoaster.

Dcaggie, hey good luck with your sales thread. Hope your pup pulls through. Dogs are such loyal animals and I certainly understand why they are called "Mans best friend."

To me it just looks like a flat v bevel was applied consistently to the blade, resulting in a wider bevel towards the tip. See here:

...If you are sharpening a stiff blade, put the knife across the machine and sharpen the whole blade without moving the knife. This will give you perfect tracking and a slight angle gain at the tip, which helps minimize the wide bevel that develops at the end of the knife. The wide bevel develops because as you get closer to the tip, the edge of the knife moves in to a thicker part of the blade.

What I take from this is that if you reprofile a blade at a consistent angle across the length of the blade's edge, there will be variation in the width of the primary (the thinned portion behind the edge) bevel and secondary bevel (the edge) because the knife tapers off at varying thickness from ricasso to tip.

My opinion is that it has been sharpened, but it looks alright to me.

Here is a knife I sharpened to similar effect, where you can clearly see the primary bevel widen towards the tip due to the application of a consistent angle to a bevel that occurs at different thickness as the knife tapers towards the tip. You can see it more on blades that have a belly. A wharncliffe or an edge without much curve will appear more consistent.

If you are careful to keep the edge at about the same distance from the end of the table, you'll probably see that your angle is consistent, but the original one was not. Most knives have a steeper grind angle near the tip than further away from it. Your bevel will widen out as you get near the tip, unless your knife doesn't have much belly and does have a lot of distal taper.

Personally, the widening of the edge doesn't bother me. If you think about it, it's really a function of both the blade width v.s. the blade thickness as you move from the handle to the tip, and the rate of distal taper. I'd rather have a consistent edge angle then a consistent edge bevel.

From http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/692361-Edge-Pro-Apex-just-got-it-and-need-help

In summary, on several blades, especially those that are handmade, the appearance of a secondary bevel (edge) that is uniform in width in many cases comes at the expense of edge angle consistency. That is how I understand it in any case. I am by no means an expert on the topic. As noted it appears the bushfinger was sharpened, but it does not look all that out of what you might expect of a consistent v edge applied to a handmade knife. The merits of any style of sharpening are outside the scope of this post.

Just a quick note to reinforce a post from last year (can't remember when or who) as to how this thread, and naturally, the demand for Fiddleback Forge knives has grown and improved. My first purchase from the Fleamarket was sometime in July 2013 or page 9 (ish) and look where we are today - an amazing community, who appreciate bladed tools and the value of friendship.
here's to the next 300,

Cheers,

Jules

Just wanted to send a shout out to Vayu. He's a stand out guy who went out of his way to help me sell off those knives to help fund my dog's surgery. Its much appreciated, more than you'll ever know.

Thanks Vayu!

I concur
That was pretty freakin awesome

Well, it's certainly a buyers market at the moment on the Fleamarket. Can't believe the price drops on some of the knives. Can't decide if that's good or bad - suppose it depends if you're buying or you're selling :)
