the great md ff price hike experiment...

If the number sold on the website is accurate, and for only the current drop, they have sold more than 2000 selects, and nearly 6000 of the standard model.
And there’s a month left in the drop. Let’s see how they move over the next 30 days.

Edit 5209 and 2066 on 3/30

yes, I've been watching those, and they seem to be a lifetime sales volume, the numbers have not been reset when the drop becomes inactive & reactivates

I own a few of the MD collabs (made by WE) including the gent, crux, and keen and they are high value knives in my opinion. Good materials, fit and finish, action, made by a reputable company, and overall high quality production pieces. I also feel the prices are pretty fair for what you get. All 3 models are good and The keen is a shining star. It's impressive enough that I am looking at getting the portal and groove versions as well after owning the smooth keen. Nobody likes paying more but hell everybody's been doing it for 2019 Spyderco benchmade massdrop etc so I say if you don't like the price hikes snap them up now before they possibly go higher in future drops or flat out pass on them. The other option would be to pick up one on the exchange. That's where I grabbed two of the three when MD was out of stock. As far as QC issues yeah the pocket clip blows on the gent as mentioned but other than that I haven't had any issues with my collabs personally.

The current pre-order price is $100.

Why worry about something that hasn't happened yet?

The price on the standard Gent used to be $80, and the price on the Gent Select was $100.

The price on the standard Gent is now $100, and the price on the Gent Select is now $120.

Gotcha. I don't pay a lot of attention to their branded stuff.

I do know get in on the early drops while stuff is cheap and screen shot them to compare prices.

No problems here with my Gent select. Don't like the price hike, but it's relatively minor compared to a lot of companies. $120 for S35VN, CF, Ti, bearings, and built by WE, that's still a hell of a deal.

When you have three companies collaborating, price hikes are not surprising. At least that's my almighty opinion.

Even before any price increases, I did not find the prices for most things on Massdrop worth buying after adding in the sales tax and shipping charges.

The only thing I've purchased there so far is a Fallkniven Diamond/Ceramic Dual Bench Stone that I saved just a little $ on. Went thru w/the sale just to see how well Massdrop handled it. It was ok but took more time that I am usually willing to wait for things. So, it's unlikely that I'll buy much (if anything) else there but it's fun just to look to see what they are offering to sell from time to time.

A lot of the items actually ship free, you just have to add them to your “cart” to find out. I didn’t realize that at first. It tends to be on items $50 and up, but the free shipping can be found on some of their cheaper stuff too.

I’m surprised they charge tax on your orders. I live in Washington state and MassDrop is one of the very few online companies that still doesn’t charge me sales tax after the recent Supreme Court ruling. Heck, even BladeHQ charges me sales tax now. :(

Raise the prices and then have sales.... probably still end up with a better bottom line. I have little interest in Massdrop knives in general and it doesn't matter to me if they charged $1000.

Added: To speak honestly about it, if I were interested in a certain MD knife after the price increase, it wouldn't stop me from buying one. But the % increase is actually pretty steep.

It’s been interesting watching the evolition of MD’s involvement in the knife business.

With regards to the Gent specifically, it was worth consideration at $80. At $100, I’d recommend someone consider a FRN Chaparral or Native. Yes, different genres, but better knives (in my subjective opinion).

Yes, I've noticed some items ship free but the discounts still aren't that great after sales tax is added. I'm in CA and every order I've considered included sales tax.

Just doesn't work that well for me but I'll keep looking there and if the "right" deal pops up, I'll buy it.

The Massdrop price/value bashing threads are getting a little tedious on this site. Massdrop is a lot like West Marine on the boating forums I frequent. Everyone dragging out the pitchforks and torches bitching about the high prices and price increases all the time.

No retailer owes anybody anything. If you don’t like the products they sell at the prices they’re asking, then don’t buy!

Maybe it's because they're planning on putting a bigger logo on?
These comments always amuse and somewhat baffle me. Perhaps you're basing this on their earlier products? The two knives I have purchased (Keen and Crux) are as close to sterile blades as you're likely to find. The Massdrop logo is relatively very, very, unobtrusive. There's far more branding/info on every ZT, Spyderco, BM, etc. that you'll see. My impression is that the earlier offerings had a larger version of the Massdrop name, but they have apparently responded to some criticism of that and shrunk it considerably.

It's kinda my thing, on any md thread to throw shade.

There are alot better knives than the ff line. I feel like people just have to have the ff collab for some stupid reason. Oh yea knife trends. They think materials for low prices = good. But the fact is, a good knife all together is better. I'd rather have any spyderco over a ff MD collab. And I base this off my experience of the MD ff knife I had and the few I've handled since.

People just say, but it's ti and s35vn on bearings... I say it doesn't matter, it can't compare to a legit good knife of different material. But then again most people just don't understand this, Barely use there knives or keep them in safes. The average md customer buys the many crkt knives they offer consistently. Which imho are junk. So I guess if you look at it that way the ff collabs are a luxury lol.

I can’t argue with much of your point. In my opinion the MD/FF Falcon just isn’t a great knife. It never really worked for me; the ergos were a mess, the clip wasn’t great and the blade was thick behind the edge with wide stock. BUT... it might be perfect for somebody. The Crux is maybe a little better at ergos but is still plagued by some of the shortcomings of the Falcon. The best collaboration knives are definitely not the FF designs. The Gent, Keen, Orca and even the Terzuola are great knives. I think the Terzuola would’ve gotten much more favorable coverage if not for a crap storm about hardware color and maker’s mark.

But yes, I agree. IMO the FF knives have all missed the mark. It doesn’t much matter how great a value the sum of the parts may be if the knife just doesn’t work for you as a cutting tool.
