the great md ff price hike experiment...

And if your "shade" is unfounded and only presented to stir the pot, that is trolling.

Actually, I thought Yo’s logo comment was knida funny; it gave me a giggle anyway. I never thought the MD branding was an issue and always found the stir it created kind of amusing.

I’m not familiar with the “casting shade” idiom. Is it pejorative?

Peace.

I can’t argue with much of your point. In my opinion the MD/FF Falcon just isn’t a great knife. It never really worked for me; the ergos were a mess, the clip wasn’t great and the blade was thick behind the edge with wide stock. BUT... it might be perfect for somebody. The Crux is maybe a little better at ergos but is still plagued by some of the shortcomings of the Falcon. The best collaboration knives are definitely not the FF designs. The Gent, Keen, Orca and even the Terzuola are great knives. I think the Terzuola would’ve gotten much more favorable coverage if not for a crap storm about hardware color and maker’s mark.

But yes, I agree. IMO the FF knives have all missed the mark. It doesn’t much matter how great a value the sum of the parts may be if the knife just doesn’t work for you as a cutting tool.

The Gent is a great knife, but also missed the mark?

I would suggest looking the term up. Doing it once can be funny. But to admit that it is "your thing" with a certain dealer (a supporting dealer at that) is awfully trollish, especially when it isn't true and the topic has been generally on topic and positive.

Take me for example, I've never and likely will never consider MD, I find the model isn't exactly what I want in a dealer, maker, or whatever they are. Too many chefs in the kitchen if you will. Now, I don't make it my "thing" to say so in every MD thread. It is unnecessary, and the model seems to work for lots of other people.

And more on topic, I think if folks are disappointed in this price increase, I think the future will only bring more disappointment. Prices will continue to go up over time, on everything. If a $20 increase on a luxury item kills it for you, might want to look at your spending choices over all. From what I can tell, with just the materials alone $100 and $120 seems extremely competitive. I also think it is preposterous to estimate that sales on this knife will drop by 70% from this price increase, as the OP has posited. Seems to me he just made that up.

you know, some people on bf continue to try to change a threads intent, so as to better attack the op for 'complaining' or 'trolling' or some other nonsense. Re-read my original post; I neither complained, nor made any statement that somehow md 'owes' us super low prices.

I also made it clear that I am estimating what kind of drop in sales volume will result with the price increases, I never tried to say it was some kind of scientific result. Yet I'm being taken to task for my estimate? It would make more sense to put your guess forward and we'll see who end's up being closer to the mark.

My interest here is simply that of online marketing as it relates to knives and the outcome of the rather large increases md has decided to make.
They are a company, created to make profit, and as such they have the freedom to set any price they want. They could double prices overnight, and I wouldn't complain, but neither would I become a customer in such cases.

fwiw, I am happy that md is officially supporting bf, and this thread is not intended to bash them or complain. We can still talk about the 20-25% price increases they've enacted on the ff gent line and be civilized right?

I re-read your original post. It comes off overwhelmingly negative. Especially when the Gent has been wildly successful and the reviews have been very positive.

...numerous quality control issues... poor clips... generally poor qc... numerous complaints... they will see at most only 30% of the sales volume as before the hikes... pricing scheme... "interesting" experiment...

It’s been interesting watching the evolition of MD’s involvement in the knife business.

With regards to the Gent specifically, it was worth consideration at $80. At $100, I’d recommend someone consider a FRN Chaparral or Native. Yes, different genres, but better knives (in my subjective opinion).
I’d be hard pressed to recommend the Gent over the FRN Chappy, the Chappy is one of my favorite all-time knives. It’s probably better than the Gent in most ways...unless one needs one-handed open/close. I’d forgotten the FRN Chap when I was trying to think of a better knife in the price range; thanks for reminding me.

The Gent is a great knife, but also missed the mark?
No, sorry if I was unclear. I think the Gent is a win for MD collabs. Some complain about the clip but it’s effective and fits the gentleman’s theme of the knife. I consider the Gent second only to the Keen.

I didn’t mean to highjack your thread, but it seemed to me that you opened up with a preconceived tone. That being said, you have every right to vote with your wallet and I support your right to do so.

Thanks for starting a conversation.

I also think the gent is one of the best md collabs, even with the issues listed. I want to see more high quality budget knives, as it pushes the envelope of the industry as a whole.

You started this negative thread. Even the title is click bait. You came up with a bunch of problems as evidence that people on here just aren't seeing. You came up with an outlandish estimate on how this price increase will impact sales. Even if after the increase your prediction comes true there is no way you can equate decreased sales to the price increase. What if most people interested in the knife already bought one? It was an irresponsible estimate based on nothing but your own perceived negative outlook. I don't care to take part in such wild speculation.

You made the thread, now you need to deal with the differing opinions, which do differ greatly from your negativity.

Most of the knives from md offer the first drop at a cheaper price than the 2nd or 3rd etc drops. It's fairly common thing and often explained that will happen.

One could considered this Part 2.

Na, just adding discussion on the side of the group that felt md sold/planned/whatever knives were already overpriced and gaudily logoed. Stirring the pot is not trolling, its talking, like on a knife forum thingy.

Report me next time and let the mods deal with it if you feel that way.

I'm just having a discussion on a knife forum thingy

yes, the md offer in that thread was $6 more than buying from bladehq (would be $24, a savings of 20%) - I believe it's fair to point it out. Forgive me for wanting to spread true info. I thought some bf people would like to be informed.
Are you going to do price comparisons between other dealers on different knives as well too? Seems like a lot of work to show all the differences. I think if bf members want to be informed of price differences they are more than capable of looking them up themselves, don't you?

That would be sooo cool to have a daily update on the best price online for a Delica 4...or a Steel Will Cutjack...or a Kershaw Atmos!

That’d be awesome! And also, probably, deal spotting...
