The H.E.S.T. application thread

@savagesicslayer: Nice set up. Havn't used the space between the scales so far. Since the HEST is my EDC, I guess I have to put some money in.

If you wanna go on a psycho trip, that's what you prepare for food:barf:

Whoooaaaa, them Amanita's pack more punch than just a "psycho trip", nice pick.
Here's my Hest being put to good use:

The strong point makes tip first splitting an easy chore:

And the bottle opener makes it a good tool for getting some fine stuff for tinder:

The thing cuts pretty well too!

Really ?
got it in 1986. Beat the crap of it: chopped, digged, thrown it... it' written "Rambo II" on it and "440C Japan". Great fantazy knife. Bought in Normandy.
Got that compass cap and fish hooks and line and matches in the handle !
Sounded like the real mac coy to me. ;)

The late Jimmy Lile (rest in peace) made the knives for the first two Rambo films, and Gil Hibben made the third I believe. Everyones pics look great, I gotta go charge my cameras. Got like three and they're all dead. Go figure.

I'm not too keen on risking my knife as a spear head either, but pointed stick < proper spear. Spending some dirt time with a fire hardened wood spear point was a real eye opener for me. Penetration with a spear-sized wooden point leaves much to be desired. Quite ineffective on mid-sized game. While I'm sure it is possible to kill game with said spear, if I'm ever in a survival situation you won't see me trusting a chance at energy/moral boosting meat to a wooden spearpoint unless that meat is fish. Basically, my point is that there is something to be said for a metal blade as a head, even if it is a bad idea to use your knife.

Great post, onebagnomad! Over the years I've heard people repeat the same old thing about using a fire-hardened, pointed stick to kill large game and when I ask them if they've ever tried it, they take it as a flame, so I've stopped doing it.

I think the point about using your knife as a spear isn't to throw it at some fortuitous target, but rather to use it to dispatch large game, from a bit of distance, that you've managed to trap, but not kill. The snare/trap prevents the critter from running off with your knife.

I like seeing other hests that are dirty rather than mine.
I when I'm lazy, or just want to use my knife, pop my soda/soup can with builtin opener with the pry bar.

The DPx H•E•S•T has an unusual feature of four lashing points for deadfalls, use as an axe and other durable in extremis uses.

The first point is the bottle opener/wire cutter, second is the double rear holes near the prybar, third lashing point is the horizontal holes (one is in the center of the knife and the second is actually a notch in the forward inside handle. The the final is the actual open handle which can be used to mount the knife in a variety of ways.

Also fans of DPx H•E•S•T will note that dual or multiple knives can be lashed together for traps and improvised devices.

So is the bottle opener also the wire breaker, or is the wire breaker at the rear of the cutting edge?

I really need to get out and takes some pics with mine to demo some small knife techniques...maybe tomorrow.

:thumbup::thumbup:

sounds good, I've been wanting to get out and demo how to split a bigger log with just an Izzy, but my joints are playing up a lot these days, have to get them under control first.

I really appreciate all of the pics of the HEST. I just ordered my first ESEE yesterday after stumbling across them about a week ago. Started with a RC5 for a reliable survival knife.

Got a problem though... already looking for my next ESEE- Either the Izula, or HEST. Thinking HEST. Anyways, thanks again.

Between ESEE-4, ESEE-3, HEST, and Izula, the HEST and ESEE-4 are tied for my favorite. But the HEST gets the most use, by far. Although that is primarily the bottle opener.

I hate threads like this, they end up costing me money. Looks like I will be adding something else to my cart.

The HEST pass-around was my tipping point.
Got a great deal on mine from Patriot Knives.

I REALLY like this knife... just can't EDC it - Izzy has that covered though. The HEST rides in my Versipack Jumbo.

The feel in-hand is balanced, grippy, and very comfortable.

All I can recommend is to get one - you'll not regret it. In the unlikely chance you're not smitten with it, you can always find someone to buy/trade to get it off your hands.

So is the bottle opener also the wire breaker, or is the wire breaker at the rear of the cutting edge?

Be careful - the wire breaker is also the "blood sample drawing mechanism"

Also, how about attaching 5 HESTs together to make a glaive like in Krull... :D
