The Hinderer Anticipation Thread - What Are YOU Waiting for?

Ah shucks.... Well Kevin, I think you're going to love wharnie!! It's just so wicked looking! Definitely my favorite.... Well until I carry one of my other grinds! Haha! You know how that goes :D

^ Oh yes I do. I've been on a huge Slicer kick lately, rotating between the 3.5" and 4". Looking forward to the Wharnie! Thanks man!

So, this is my first post on Blade Forums, but I've been lurking for a bit.

I just got my first XM-18, and really my first higher end knife. I've always carried Benchmades (943 in uniform, and an orange Griptilian for civvies) but I've been paying attention to Tony Sculimbrene over at everydaycarry for a while, and kept hearing amazing things about the XM. So on a lark I contacted Rob and they happened to have just opened orders. Whee.

Now I'm the proud owner of a XM-18 3.5" spanto flipper with orange scales. This thing is freaking amazing. I want to get copper standoffs for it, and would've ordered them already but Rick's site is down. :( I also want to get a CF scale for it, but those are apparently hard to come by. And of course, at some point I'd like another Hinderer, and that wharncliffe grind looks amazing.

Thoughts?

Well, I've never been a huge fan of the flipper form factor. I had an old Kershaw (little orange thing with a weird fluted blade), and I got the ZT 0700 for Christmas and it's always seemed like an awkward way to deploy a knife. I think that was exacerbated by how stiff the ZT was though. The XM was a little stiff when I first started playing with it, but now I can flip it with barely any wrist movement. I'd say I still prefer the coin flip opening method, but this XM has made a convert as to the usefulness of flippers. It's just... smooth.

The lock up on it seems about perfect. It's just the right tension, and with the rounded jimping and the wide lock bar it doesn't tear up your thumb when you're closing it. It's barely bigger than my grip, and it looks like the actual cutting surface is smaller but it feels so much bigger. Holding this thing makes me feel like I'm holding a dagger. It just feels substantial and important.

I can't really talk about blade steels as, I don't know much about them and really haven't sharpened my knives before, but I'm interested in learning how and have been reading up on it here on the forum. I'm probably going to send off the XM and ZT to get them sharpened though. Yeah they come sharp, but apparently any factory grind is still going to have issues. Knifeknut1013 seems to have a lot of people impressed with what he does with sharpening.

I'm super impressed with the XM, and I'm very happy that I got it. My one gripe is that it came set up for tip down carry, but I fixed that right quick. I'll probably order myself Rick's armorer tool and some copper standoffs within the month.

Welcome to the Herd Alex!! Sounds like you're started off right amigo. The XM's take a different approach to flipping them. Pre load pressure upwards on the gnarls of the flipper, then pull finger back fast!! That is the method. No wrist flicking is needed :)

My 3.5" sterile 20cv slicer flipper will be here tomorrow!(along with a factory swedge large regular sebenza). It's sure going to hard to pay attention in class tomorrow.

Something black and sharp in bound this week....... :D Love this anticipation thread!

Can't wait to see what you have inbound, it's got to be good!

I also will have something black & sharp headed my way later in the month..

Mine is nothing to special my friend, just something I've wanted to pick up for some time and never did as of yet. Any XM is worth anticipation in my book

Waiting for my first to come in. A 3" slicer flipper.

Nice, Humble. I too may be having my first 3" coming in in the near future. But first, I got a wharnie coming in tomorrow. Tracking says earlier today, but that's crap. Still in Memphis! Bleh.

Thanks guys. This one's coming from Germany so might take a little while. It's pretty hard to find a slicer flipper in 3". I'm a long time CRK collector and I'm a bit ashamed that it took me this long to take the plunge on an XM, but now that it's inbound I'm really excited!

Welcome to the herd Humble! My only two knives are CRK and RHK. I don't carry my 25 as much after I got the XM but I think you made a good choice taking the leap!

humblerodent,

I'm actually planning on going the other way. Now that I have my first XM, I'd like to pick up a Sebenza. Also considered picking up a Strider, but with the controversy surrounding his mil. career, don't want to support him.
