THE Hollow Handle Knife Thread

I usually have a real compass on me as well, the button compass in the hilt is just a back up and really takes up no room since its flush with the handle cap. The ones I've had that didn't have a compass were just solid and flat. Or like sam makes, threaded for a fire steel.

Now these threaded ones sound interesting. Are they a user mod?

No Sam Wilson makes a very nice custom hollow handle knife, he puts a fire steel in the end cap instead of a compass. I don't think he threads it so I may have misspoken on that. i remember talking to him about it, a few pages back.

Should of done my research better. Just found a series of posts he made on British Blades about his knives :)

Dang finding this thread was expensive!!!! :-) ordered 2 Shrades in 5.5" blade, one for myself and one for the son. Then today I spoke for a Chris Reeves / Al Mar collaboration in 7" blade, ??? Of 200! Had my eye on this for several months so told the dealer ( done business with for 35+ years! ) to put it in the safe for me till I can get back with the $$$$$ ! Wasn't anymore and a bit less than a Sebenza so what the heck! They are going on the Bay and other dealers for 3-$400 over what I will give so I bit the bullet! Now trying to decide on stripping off the battleship grey paint off the Schrade and blueing one to see how it looks? Haven't tried paint stripper yet? Chemically taking it off would be the best I think to remove the paint from the handle since it's knurled ,,, anyone got any ideas???

I saw one sell on ebay a month or so ago, very seldom had I seen one before that. If I'd had the money at the time I would have bought it. I really like a longer blade though.

Sawteeth on the spine of the knife are often synonymous with hollow handled survival knives. In some, these are useful for notching timber. In some they are useless. Is there a knife where the sawteeth can actually be used to saw through timber? I have a reason for my question. On my property, most of my timber is hardwood (black wattle). I have used lots of chopper blades (kukries, busses etc) to remove the timber, usually following storm damage, to clear tracks etc. I found a long time ago that a wood saw would do the same job for about 10% of the effort. I would love to carry a knife where the blade is for slicing, the spine for sawing, and the handle for small item carry. That would be so convenient - slicer, saw, and hollow handled - but am I only dreaming?

I've seen tree's sawed with hollow handle knives, really a pain and a lot of effort. It works but works better for notching the wood. A good hand saw would be less effort.

With that said...

Now not my pics they are from Newt Martin.

Cricket Dave,, paint stripper and small wire brush worked great! Burnished with 600 wet dry sandpaper and used Brownells Oxpho- blue . Came out fairly well.

I have taken the plunge on another hollow handle knife - the AITOR JUNGLE KING I. It will be interesting to check the sturdiness of this knife. There are a lot youtube videos about the Aitor but I couldn't find a lot of real life reviews where this knife is being used over a period of time for various uses. Many of the reviews also are in a language other than English.

I've got one of those that I've had for at least 25years, maybe longer. I gave it to my daughter a few years ago, its been beat on like a rented mule and never had a problem. The saw teeth fill up with wood pulp fast though. I really liked the sling shot and other stuff in the sheath. Not bad for nocking over a squirrel for dinner.

Well, hopefully getting closer and closer to that big bang hush-hush new Sam Wilson knife model. I know Sam said the blade and all will be getting hardened and heat tempered this month (April). And I tell you guys, I am prob more excited about it than all the ppl are that keep asking me questions about it. I am Sooooo ready to just explode with its details. But I'm not!! LOL. Not t Sam Man is done with it, and I have it, and then unveil it.

But wouldn't you just know that I have Another knife ace up my sleeve? Because shortly after this one is made and unveiled, Sam will be working on a whole other new knife model for me!! And guys, you talk about a Knife!!!! Only 2 words needed to describe this one (Well, 3 words actually): Massive Midwest Beast!!! And I tell ya, I am even more excited about This new massive beast!!!! But again, Mum Is The Word!!

I will say this though: Both the knife Sam is making for me now And this one that will be soon following it...wuth Sam Wilson being extremely gifted with superb knife making quality along with his untiring work at striving for perfection...all of these things are going to make these two new Wilson knives absolutely Unbeatable and Unmatched. Of course, this just my opinion...at least until the unveiling of one of them...Then people will see for themselves that I am Right!!! OHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHH!!!! THOSE WILSON CUSTOM KNIVES ROCK!!!!!

Nice, Glenn. Lets see pics when you get it. I have read a lot of positive reviews about the Aitor and its durability.

No wonder Sam hasn't posted much lately....he's been too busy down in the forges pounding out these new, top-secret hollow handled Excaliburs! ;)

Keep us posted, TDB...

Could we please ask the moderators to stop this thread - it is costing me way too much money. I just picked up Chris Reeve Project 1 off ebay. :)

Yeah, been very busy outside of the shop. Haven't completed much in the way of HH knives recently. Should have some done before too long, though. I will be sure to get them posted here as soon as I get them done.

I can't see the pics in Dave's post for some reason, but I pretty much agree with what he said in his post. You're not going to do a whole lot of effective sawing with the sawback on a hollow handle or any other knife. Most will notch good, some saw decent, but I'm unaware of any that will come close to keeping up with a real saw. The main problem is that the spine on most of these knives is near 1/4" thick, and the saw portion is only a couple of inches long. That is a very large kerf to remove from whatever you are sawing. Even if the tooth design works great, you are going to be expending quite a bit of energy to go through anything of decent size.

You would probably have better luck with the Jungle King style knives, with the thinner blade stock and crosscut style saw. And as far as the durability of the Jungle King and other HH knives, unless they're the cheapies, you're going to be just fine. I believe that the Jungle King is pinned and epoxied. Abuse is the only way to really break them apart. There have been some custom makers that simply epoxied the blades in the handles, and never had a problem. In almost every case, the blade will snap before the blade and handle come apart. Even the blade snapping at the guard doesn't mean the HH knife failed. Plenty of full-tang knives have been broken there. Think about what it would take to rip the stub tang of a HH knife out of the handle. That, to me, would be a failure of a HH knife. I just don't see it happening on a quality HH knife, barring abuse or a defect, which can happen to any knife.
