THE Hollow Handle Knife Thread

No Cricketdave,it's very much like the project knives far as I know? I've googled them up a few times. Came I think in 3 sizes? Someone who knows more than I do can correct me! The one I'm looking at has the long blade 7-1/2" The Schrade schf2sm knives are supposed to be an almost copy! It's probably rare enough I should get it but then I would hate to use it !!! And I don't like safe queens! :-)

Well that was a new one to me lol. I like several of the other CR knives blade shapes better though. Pretty cool though.

Yep!----looks like the knife Sam Wilson started this thread with! Chris Reeves project II ! Now if I can just decide to pick it up!!!!!!!!

Took a new pic of my 7inch martin with the stuff I carry in the handle and pouch on the sheath.

Kevlar cord, signal mirror, flashlight, arrowhead, bandaids and antibiotic cream, mini multi tool, mini chem lights, fishing gear, fire steel and lighter. All stuff I've found handy to have in the field.

Great looking knife and photo, Dave. That's a well thought out kit.

Thanks TAH, most of my kits are more heavily slanted towards spending the night out unexpectedly. I got to do that once and the weather turned bad, hunting guide got lost trying to find where he had dropped us off and neither of us had anything to light a fire with. 32 with inadequate clothing and no fire sucked big time and it was misting everything was wet. At the time I didn't know how to make a bow drill for a fire, and I can tell you that pulling a bullet and trying to light the powder with popping the primer doesn't work lol. Huddling over a big flashlight was pretty much the only heat we had for quite a few uncomfortable hours. Never again I'm too old for that crap.

Glad you made it back safely. Just think of the advantage you would have had if you were carrying your knife above. Yea, as so many say, HH knives are worthless.

The folks who go on and on about that only have experience with the cheap crap ones, never used a good quality one.

Talking about Martin knives, here is another model we haven't discuss about : the 5" blade Triple Aught Design HH.

Sweet I saw one of those for sale not long ago. Newt posted a couple of 10yr anniversary pics the other day too.

Stainless damascus.

Nice pics, Le Seb! Thanks for posting them.

Okay, a question for all my fellow hollow handle fans:

You are going on a wilderness trip, facing unknown adventures. You may only bring with you one tool/weapon, a hollow handle knife that you currently possess. Which one do you take?

For me, it's a pretty easy choice because I don't have an extensive collection. I would take my Buck 184.

For some of you guys, this may be a tough choice....

Thanks cricketdave. That's what I'm looking for.

Quiet around here...

Not too quiet I hope I've just discovered this thread. Read through every page today. :) love those little roll up pouches wish someone made them to
Buy. As it is I'm going to have to try and make one. I have my eye on a few hollow handle blades. I love all knives but I have a childhood love of hollow handles

Can I ask some questions. I'm from UK so really fire is the only concern. What matches and fire starters are people putting in the handle

Infact how about a few examples of what people have in their knife handles I don't know where to start

I usually keep a fire steel and scraper along with some kevlar cord, fish hooks and sinkers, and life boat matches and a striker. Or depending on what sheath I'm using I also have a pouch on the front with an alto ids tin full of stuff.

Welcome to the thread, arclightuk! It is often quite hopping around here, it has just been a little slow lately. It will pick up again. I also love those little roll up pouches, which originated I believe from the Timberline survival knives in the '80's. I would love to make/buy some.

Interestingly, I've noticed quite a few UK'ers who are fans of hollow handles. Nice.

cricketdave has an awe-inspiring array of HH knives, and the photography skills to show them off....

Yes I have noticed his knives and pictures. He has two on my list the SURV9 and the Apparo. I have sent emails to Martin Knives about them both. I wondered what coating others have chosen I like the sound of the subdued finish they offer

The little roll up pouches just seem to make sense and if anyone does make some I will be buying hint hint ;)

Cricketdave thanks for the ideas for what to put in the handle it's appreciated. I'm thinking matches fire steel and scraper and like the esee arrowhead :)

Also cricketdave what compasses do you use and how do you get them in there?

What length / brand of fire steel do you recommend?

Cricketdave, could you please tell me the weight of the SURV9 knife you own. If I am ever going to buy a custom hollow handled knife, the one that appeals to me most is the SURV9.

I would be interested In that too. Also does it's size restrict it's uses.

Also I saw you had the Apparo as well. I know you've mentioned you prefer the SURV9. Can I ask for further details on why

Thanks
