THE Hollow Handle Knife Thread

Got out in the woods and played with the new Martin mce2. Chops very well a good deep bite and retains the edge to still make a feather stick to start a fire with. The saw back works well notching limbs too, the raker teeth on the front clear out the cut while the split teeth on the spine do the work.

All in all its a tough very well made knife, apocalypse rated just like my toyota fj.

Hello all you guys! Ive not been here in like Forever it seems. Had quite a bit rotten luck lately but seems to be improving little by little. Anyway, I have a new knife on order to be made by Tim Spry of Spry Knives. It is going to be a real beast of a knife providing it is a legit deal and is made. No offense meant but once you have been ripped off by a so-called knife maker and then also recently by a regular old Joe Jerkoff, you find it hard to trust Anyone. But anyway, the new knife is going to be full tang...not hollow handled. I still have the M6 coming from Sam Wilson. He is working on it as we speak.

Anyway, I am sort of back in the BF game. I will be posting pics of newer knives as I get them. Thanks to those guys who has asked Sam about my wellbeing. It just shows that this forum is a very unique one and in a superior class all by itself.---Brian

Good to have you back. I had similar with a maker but I hopefully have it resolved now. It sucks!

The only 'quality' hollow handle blade I have is a BuckMaster 184 I took in a little while back, mostly out of nostalgia...I can still remember looking at one when I was a boy, standing next to my Dad in a sporting goods shop a long time ago (I had the knife bug even back then).

While I think the BuckMaster is a decent, sturdy-enough fixed blade (or boat anchor with the weight), and would serve well if used as knife and not a crow-bar, my preference is for full tang. I am sure some of the custom makers of today, and some of the higher quality factory makers are putting out good quality, but lack of a full tang does certainly not enhance the strength factor.

Long story short, unless you're seriously worried about becoming separated from your sheath, you can generally store a good bit more kit in a SpecOps sheath pouch or similar than in a hollow knife handle. And then you get to keep the benefits of keeping a proper full tang blade. Win-win.

Just my $.02 worth.

good Lord that's sexy!

Thanks Ron it was well worth the wait. As with all the knives I've gotten from Newt it holds a fantastic edge and is a great cutter.

Boss I usually have a altoids tin kit on my sheaths for a more fully helpful kit. I had a buck master years ago when they came out and just sold it a few years ago. I never really warmed up to it in use. As for being stronger with a full tang, well the hollow handle knives from any of the good custom makers are very tough, you would be much more likely to break a blade before the handle came off. As I've been using knives for most of 50 years and I've yet to break a blade I'm not too worried about that.

Cricket I agree. BOSS my friend you are singing to the converted. I own both HH knives and full tang...I buy HH knives not only for practical reasons but because I like them ;)

Thing is life would be boring if we liked the same stuff ;)

I used to live about a mile or so from the jimmy lile shop and have handled some of the old sly 2 hh knives along with some other ones of his.

Ron...that must have been awesome. I've caught the randall bug at the moment. But...I still have a deep rooted love of these HH knives. It comes from childhood

So after watching sharknado 2 I was almost in a coma this evening...only thing to do, get out all my Martin knives for a group pic.

I thought a spine shot showing the different saw teeth and spines would be interesting.

Then one more showing the different finishes, bead blasted, satin, and two tone.

Hey Arc, i left you a visitor message. Got your compass in the mail this morning, shoot me an email and I'll get it on the way to you. Nice compass too, I like that it glows in the dark.

I was trimming some branches out of the way for mowing and using the Martin mce2 to do it, I made a quick video of sawing some dead oak limb. Sorry for the jerking around with the camera its a true pain in the rump to try to video with one hand and saw with the other. The saw works much better on live limbs and after chopping a bunch of low limbs was still sharp enough to shave a feather stick.

I wouldn't worry too much about Tim Spry he's a great guy glad to call him Bro I own a Spry had two but traded one off on a deal I couldn't refuse soon as the new owner received it he immediately contacted Tim to make two more knives so he could have a matching set.:D:thumbup:

Hello people. I have been looking at hollow handle knifes for ever, since they always give me a sense of adventure more than any other knife. I started small with jungle king 3 when i was a boy and a scout, moving on to jungle king 2 as my main knife in the service(mandatory enrollment at 18 for 3 and a half years where i come from), and now I have finally gotten a Jungle king 1, as well as a other fixed blades. Having said that I'd really like to get in contact with Newt Martin to order a knife. I am lusting over an Apparo 9. I have visited his website a couple of times over the last few months requesting a quote, but never heard back from him. I hope he is alright and well. Seeing that here a lot of people seem to be in contact with him, could you please share his contact details with me? I love his knives and i would really like to have one for my birthday.
Thanks in advance.
