THE Hollow Handle Knife Thread

Like I said before Sam you have really come a long way, the fit and finish on that is perfect. The joint at the guard and blade is perfect and the knife as a whole looks like a perfect bushcraft knife. Very nicely done. Still you need to do that style with the Gerber command2 style blade and size. Just because it would be a great sticker.

Radicalbearpaw, the cord went out in the mail to you today, I escaped for a whole hour lol. Swear to god when this 8 weeks is up and wife is back to work I'm painting my body blue, running nekkid through the neighborhood waving a broad sword and screaming freedom!

Thank you, Dave, I do appreciate it. I have so much more to learn, but this pas year has been filled with education, read: plenty of steel in the trash can. But I feel like I'm making progress, finally. Thank you again.

I'm excited to make one of these to play with out in the woods. I'm with you, I think they will do good for bushcrafty purposes. I will take a look at the Gerber, and who knows, maybe something will happen. Probably something bad, lol.

Thank you,
Sam

Thank you RX. I appreciate it, and the influences go well together here, in my opinion. And practical was the name of the game on this one.

The Mora sounds like a neat idea, and I look forward to seeing it when done. Please post here in the thread or let us know when it's ready, sounds cool. And I will add, not that you asked and I don't mean to give you advice unsolicited, but don't worry about it looking similar to another knife. In my mind, and after talking with plenty of other makers, the only time its an issue is if it's an exact copy of somebody else's work.

There are only so many ways to make a knife, and especially if it has a hollow handle, they're going to start sharing characteristics pretty quickly. I have made no secret of the influence Jack Crain's work has had on me, and it's pretty evident in some of my knives. I say, do whatever you want, and give mention if you use someone else's ideas, and don't copy them directly. Again, you didn't ask for advice, and I apologize if I stepped on your toes, you may be a Master Knifemaker, I don't know you. But I thought I would give you my two cents. :)

Thank you, and please keep us posted!

Sam

Sam, I'm not worried about stepping on your toes. I wasn't planning to make something that looks like your knife - I just meant that the similarities are going to be in size, not shape. Mine isn't going to have any guard plate at all and will be constructed by "micarta" wrapping the stub tang and a short tube in one go, instead of inserting the tang in the tube.

No problem, that sounds cool. I hope I didn't imply that you were copying me or anything like that, I just basically meant make whatever you want, cause it's fun! :):D

I still look forward to seeing it, and that sounds like a practical knife to use. You better have pics when it's done!:D

UPS finally got it here late yesterday afternoon, after 2 days stranded in Nahsville, TN due to the winter storm.

First "un-boxing" observations are impressive, it's a big knife, but doesn't seem that heavy. Every millimeter of the 7.5" D2 blade, is razor sharp. Sheath is a nice molle compatible and fully ambidextrous sheath that comes with most Kizlyar fixed blades, just bigger. :)

Ruler laser etched into the blade, not sure how much you'd need it, but a nice touch.

Blade spine has a false edge and another section described by Kizlyar as "a specially shaped bevel designed for chopping bones and other hard materials so that the user does not need to risk damaging the main blade while performing these tasks" Neither is fully sharpened, but could be if someone wanted to. I plan to see how well that beveled section strikes a firesteel.

The hollow handle has an "O" ring seal, plus a waterproof capsule with a "kit" in it. I will revamp the kit, and since the handle has an "O" ring, may lose the capsule to get a little more room.

The "Survival" kit. Not much to it, needle and thread, snare wire, some storm matches, some fishing line, hooks and sinkers. 1 safety pin, and there was 1 band-aid but after removing all of it from the capsule, I could not wrap it tight enough to get it back in.
I call these a "better than nothing..but not by much" kits. :)

Already had this Kizlyar molle attachable pouch, so I moved it over to this knife, as part of a plan to build a "survival" rig on it.

Already battling our current snow storm!

So far, I like this knife, it's big and may not be that practical, but it seems very well made. I hope to get some time out playing with it to test it soon.

That's a cool looking knife Bear Claw. Neat feature having the buttcap thread onto the outside of the knife, giving you more space on the inside. Who knows what use you'll find for the ruler, maybe come in handy when making figure 4's or something, certainly cant hurt. Looking forward to more pics and performance appraisal.

Ps: TAH, that was a very cool photo of the items of the captured/downed pilot, especially the Randall. Thanks for posting it.

I like it Bear Claw, I especially like the sheath. The ruler comes in handy more often than you would think, I've always got a card in my kit with measurements on it. I like the blade shape too, looks like its well done. I look forward to seeing how it works in use.

Really enjoying this thread. My only hollow handle at the moment:

Chris, cool knife. Any impression about how the handle mounts to the blade? Is it removable via those screws?

Don't know, they appear to be hex or allen screws, but I have no idea what Kizlyar does inside to keep them from loosening, loctite etc...

Only hole handle at this time? Oh you'll get there, and you'll be happy you decided to join the hollow handle gang! Its either you absolutely hate them our you absolutely love them! Everyone here loves them! !!!!

What would folks here say is a good custom made knife that is closest to the "First Blood" Lile knife?

The Newt Martin MCEII looks great, but are there others?

Tried the Survivalist X with a firesteel, I had hopes the beveled edge on the blade spine would work, but the Titanium coating on the blade makes it a no go. :(

Using the sharpened edge threw a big shower of sparks, so in a pinch that could be done, but looks like I will have to add a dedicated striker to the kit after all.

I think Ray Matton makes the closest that I've seen. The Martin knives have a very different front clip with more dip i guess is how I'd describe it.

Thanks, just a note, I've sat and read through this entire thread the last 2 days, and virtually none of your pictures show up in your posts.
