Not mine, but check out this unusual, rare Randall with a Model 8 blade.

Wow that is amazing: Thanks for the pic! I wonder what is the back story on that one...

In the 80s, Randall made several different models with hollow handles. These were all very limited runs. My knife with a Model 15 blade, shown in post #1033, is another example. Many of these knives were special ordered by Randall dealer, Jack Crider.

Check out the 1991 Green Crider Catalog for additional variations.

The spec ops combat master should fit it. You might have to take the insert out and dunk it in boiling water then reform it to the blade. I personally usually make a kydex sheath and space the grommets to fit the Esee molle back and pouch. The spec ops will work though.

I did a search but didn't find much. Can anyone point me to some learning on how to form fit the Spec Ops insert without going through 3-4 mistakes?

I've done kydex sheath before, I usually heat it up with a heart gun, or you can use the oven, but putting the knife in the sheath where you want it then heating it up has always worked for me. .. after it cools then you can trim all the edges, I'm just saying what's worked for me x I'm sure there's better ways to do it but I figured I'd put my 2 cents in. .. how it helped a bit... also go on YouTube and you'll be able to find more detailed instructions

The liner on the spec ops sheath is pretty thin, so its easy to work with. Take it out of the sheath, literally dip it in boiling water on the stove for no more than 30 or 40 seconds, you can tell because it gets flexible. Put your knife blade in it fold it between a couple of towels and squeeze it. let it cool and your ready to put it back in. Really easy to do.

Dave I ordered the black spec ops sheath, I guess they have two sizes so I ordered the longer one which accepts 7 inch blades and up I think to maybe 9 I'm not to sure but I know I had to choose between the short or the long...I paid 45 delivered to the house, was hoping to get a little better of a deal but oh well. .. oh hey, email about that cord, I really would love to buy some. ..I went to Lowe's today and I found some but only in neon yellow and pink. ..cool for the old lady but not for me. Lol

I'll get the cord out probably day after tomorrow, its been a long week. Wife had surgery and I haven't been able to get out at all except to doc appointments with her. She's doing better each day so should be able to slip out to the Po in a couple days. Sorry to take so long.

Sorry to hear that Dave, that just sucks man, take care of your family first don't even worry about it, when your ready and have time that cool, and I'll send you a prepaid envelope with what you need. Hope everything gets better for you guys.

Don't worry about it, she had a neurostimulater implanted in her neck, back and a batter pack in her rump, yeah she's a cyborg now. She was injured on duty about a year ago and its taken this long to get through the military medical process to get it approved she's getting better every day its just been a week and a half of constant care. 7 weeks to go, sweet jesus I'm gonna go nuts. I am vasty over supervised at the moment lol.

Sam,

That Randall blade is their Model 8, Trout & Bird knife. Typcially, the knife looks like this...

However, the Model 8 does have some interesting history and a case of it being used as a "pilot's survival knife". In 1960, Francis Gary Powers was carrying a Model 8 when his U2 spy plane was shot down while flying a reconnaissance mission over Soviet Union airspace. Here is a photo of Powers' belongings that are on display in a Russian Museum. The Model 8 blade was shaped a little different back then, but it is a Model 8 never the less.

The Spec-Ops will take to 8" but not 9": The extra length is there in the rounded nylon fabric tip, but the plastic insert's tip is moulded severely pinched-down within the rounded fabric tip, so it cannot take anything longer than 8". Maybe water heating will allow sneaking the blade 1/2" further, by melting it apart with the tip, but I doubt 9" will fit, and the tip will likely scratch over time...: Easiest way might be to try that, plus adding a 1/2" "spacer" at the sheath mouth, and move the snap up. The sheath mouth is curiously a widely flared oval shape. The sheath snap is excellent, but should be reversed in opening direction for right handers, if you want to unsnap with the thumb while gripping the handle.

I was always dumbfounded that Spec-Ops would throw away half of their potential market by stopping dead at 8"... About the only factory "tactical" blade that fits without a huge wasted space is the Fallkniven Odin at 7 7/8": Every other major factory knife either is much shorter or much too long...

The insert design is very loose, and the plastic is hard, so a hugging "melted" fit will inevitably scratch: I found thin strips of nylon "rails", glued-in by reaching with tweezers, just below the secondary grind line, with a length of about 3-4", to be stable and scratch-free, if combined with thick triangular leather pieces, glued all the way into the tip, to "stabilize" the tip in up-down movements. The tricky part is adding glue only to the edges of the triangle pieces, so they don't muck-up the inside walls on the way in...

Posting here has become troublesome as some parts of my text won't fit..

Incomplete post, as posting seems very problematic all of a sudden...

Hey guys, I wanted to introduce a new model/prototype I have just finished and have introduced to my lineup. This is the P.A.C.Knife- Pack And Camp Knife. I did a thread on it HERE. But I will post some pics here also, and look forward to any thoughts, comments or questions.

I wanted something lightweight, so I used an aluminum handle, which will be more than strong enough for a knife of this size. It's not really designed to be "hard use," so much as a good lightweight knife that slices well and has built in storage. The knife itself comes in at right around 5.5 oz, so I am pleased with that. I will post some pics and shut up.

Ok, I look forward to any thoughts/comments.

Thank you,

Sam,

It is such a gorgeous blend of bushcraft and Rambo. Great aesthetic, and very practical.

I'm gearing up to make a hollow handled micarta Mora #1, in a similar spirit (but not look).

Thank you RX. I appreciate it, and the influences go well together here, in my opinion. And practical was the name of the game on this one.

The Mora sounds like a neat idea, and I look forward to seeing it when done. Please post here in the thread or let us know when it's ready, sounds cool. And I will add, not that you asked and I don't mean to give you advice unsolicited, but don't worry about it looking similar to another knife. In my mind, and after talking with plenty of other makers, the only time its an issue is if it's an exact copy of somebody else's work.

There are only so many ways to make a knife, and especially if it has a hollow handle, they're going to start sharing characteristics pretty quickly. I have made no secret of the influence Jack Crain's work has had on me, and it's pretty evident in some of my knives. I say, do whatever you want, and give mention if you use someone else's ideas, and don't copy them directly. Again, you didn't ask for advice, and I apologize if I stepped on your toes, you may be a Master Knifemaker, I don't know you. But I thought I would give you my two cents. :)

Thank you, and please keep us posted!

Very cool Sam!

Thanks Bear Claw!

Sam
