THE Hollow Handle Knife Thread

Hi all just did a recent field review of the hollow handled knife, the "Survivalist X" from Kizlyar supreme. Grew up (well was a teenager LOL) with knives like the buck and Aitor. Now after many years I got my hands on the Survivalist X and it wasn't too bad, check the video and see what you reckon.

Go back to post #1208, I've already linked your video here. :)

Awesome (as usual), I just bought that knife last week. :)

Hi all. As someone new to the hollow handle survival knife arena (not counting the $6.99 turd I ordered from the back of Boy's Life magazine in the 80's) I was looking for some suggestions. I would like to keep the knife in the sub 10-11" range if possible and have maybe $250ish to spend. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Maverick299, you didn't mention if you have any specific uses in mind for your knife, but in the general price range you give I offer the following: Aitor Jungle King I, Kizlyar Supreme Survivalist, or Boker Apparo.

All of the above are production knives with good reputations. To get into the custom knife arena you would need to start at least $100 more.

I look forward to reading others' recommendations.

Thats about what I was thinking too Bowie, all of those are longer than 10inches though..Is one of the Schrade models shorter? The ones Bowie mentioned are very good examples of factory Hollow handles though.

AH! :o I was thinking the blade length was 10-11"....my bad.

Maybe a Jungle King III? Very compact knife, like $80.

And if my price range is off, let me know. Can you get a good one (subjective, I know) at that price point?

The uses would be mainly chopping/sawing logs and branches under 4" in diameter. Limbing fall down branches for the fire and starter wood. Stuff that can probably accomplished with my BRK Bravo, so I guess another use to list would be just the general badassery that comes with owning a large hollow handle blade.

Was just looking at the Schrade ones last night, the SCHF1SM and SCHF2SM are both just under 11".

I think, with this criteria in mind, that I would go with the Boker Apparo of the knives listed so far. Of course, if you are willing to bump up the cost a bit you could get into some great custom monsters like the Martin line- up or our own Sam Wilson.

I've posted about my Wall Model 18 before. I really like this knife. It has performed well in the light-use categories I have put it to work in so far. I am planning a weekend Northwoods camping trip during which this knife will be the featured player, so hopefully I will really put it through its paces then. I have absolutely no doubt that it would take an anvil and a sledgehammer to break this knife. But, there is another side to that coin....the reason this knife is so incredibly solid is that the tang extends so far into the hollow handle. Hard to believe but in a knife with nearly a 5" long handle, there is only 1-7/8" of storage space. I'm not really complaining; fit, finish, durability are all top notch in this handmade knife. I would certainly recommend Greg Wall and his knives to potential customers. Just don't plan on shoving a tent in your handle on this one! ;)

Great video. Pretty sure I need one now. Heck of a price point for that blade too.

Bummer...cannot find the D2 version anywhere.

I'd imagine it wouldnt be much different from wrapping an ax handle...

Thanks for the video link.

That's how I have done it before but I never did it on a knurled handle so I wasn't sure if it would pull the loop through.

I would like to double wrap my handle. do I just do the first procedure and then repeat it once I've pulled the first loop through?

What say you Cricket D?

I think that would work, I will say that when you go to pull the underlying thread through, tie it to something like a screwdriver so you can pull with both hands. If you wrapped it tight it will take a pretty good pull to get it through.

Knife works has the Survivalist Z in D2, to get the Survivalist X I had to order straight from Cas Iberia.

For anyone who questions if the Randall 18 is capable of chopping...

Great pic and beautiful knife, bowie. You will have to post some pics of it when you take it out to the woods and get frisky with it :D. Dirty pics. Of the knife getting dirty while you use it, I mean. That came out kind of strange... :D:D

Tom, I think the Randall 18 can chop even better than that, Im not sure that guy knows how to use it very well. But there's no question in my mind.
