THE Hollow Handle Knife Thread

At times its useful to see someones opinion of certain gear, I've looked up reviews of stuff that I couldn't get my grubby mits on before buying them. In general I ignore most of the common opinions of hollow handle knives, simply because they are based on crap that is produced cheaply and does break quite quickly. Most of those who have those feelings would not spend 5 or 600 bucks on any knife period so they really have nothing to base their opinions on. We are actually lucky that a few places are making good hollow handle knives in reasonable price ranges now. This particular guy's youtube I haven't seen and don't care enough to bother looking up. My outdoor gear has been in use for years with just upgrades in materials and workmanship so I'm not going to change. There are several youtube reviewers that are either goofy or too annoying for me to bother watching. But hey its free anybody can post one. Maybe its because I'm older and never actually expected to make it to 30, I sweat very little about things like that anymore.

Nowadays I'm far more concerned with the things my kids are going to face. 10 months to commissioning for my oldest, she's spending the summer at Ft. Wainwright on a training mission.

Oh buddy, your gonna love it! And don't get me wrong I watch the YouTube videos also, I just got a real problem with unemployed toyota prius driving "I got a scratch on my finger" guys sitting there saying hollow handle knives suck, or this and that sucks don't buy it when the dude spent 15 minutes in his basement in 60 degree weather cuz 40 was to cold to actually review it type guys want to tell US what he thinks is good. ... really? ? I got no problem saying go back in your house and clean your vagina 2 Times, once isn't cutting it

No I don't think so, Druid seems to think the guys youtube channel is interesting, ok cool. No need to get upset about it. Its the internet not one thing that happens on here is serious enough to get upset over. I've done plenty of silly crap myself.

In honesty I do find Prepared Mind mildly irritating - BUT - anyone who follows his channel cannot deny that he has tested a crap-load of various types of gear. He's certainly not Richard Louis Proenneke (May 4, 1916 – April 20, 2003) http://www.nps.gov/lacl/learn/historyculture/proennekes-cabin.htm ....but he's not some 13yr old who does the "unboxing-only, 'in-depth review' of some useless [to a 13yr old] tacticool folder" either. Would I rely on Prepared Mind to get me out of some messed up situation? Hell no, but...

At least prepared Mind takes ___this___ and puts it through some paces...some things that we do in the woods and some extreme testing to just see if __it__ will make it through it. That's the reason I watch his channel...he does the 'damage' so I don't have to, nor waste my money on something that's either 1. crap to begin with or; 2. isn't robust/built to take what I need it to do.

It's not that his channel is 'interesting' per se.....I just want to know what __this__ knife/axe/bag/gadget/thing will and won't do. Since he does that work for me, I'll give credit where credit is due.

His extreme testing is making his pretty shining new blade after his fat ex girlfriend who dumped him. Just what we all need a guy named Chris, a registered sex offender from YouTube still being creepy who didn't learn his lesson in 1995... wonderful. .. let's listen to him

Calm down you two. Being the hollow handle thread, we don't need anyone blowing a buttcap. :D

Yes, this is a great thread, let's not get it locked down by a mod, over all the personal insults.

Time to try decaf folks.

Check out the Boker Apparo. It is the commercial production of a Martin custom knife. It has gotten many great reviews. I'll let others here chime in with custom suggestions.

The Boker Apparo is a great one to start with and see how you like them, for customs, Sam Wilson makes a great knife, http://www.wilsoncustomknives.com/shop/ Martin knives, Hibben still makes great ones, Kizer makes a good one, Aitor jungle king both 1 and 2 are good, Schrade makes a couple of one piece and of course Chris Reeve. Oh and I forgot Randall knives and Wall knives. Lile knives still exist and you can get Timberline knives on the secondary market.

I'm partial to the Chris Reeve styled hollow handle blades but since he's not making them any more, I went and looked for copies...

Here are two good reviews of the Schrade SCHF1 model....I'm liking the knife a lot:

and

Now granted, video #2 isn't a "try to break it" type of test but the overall impression is it will accomplish most any camp task to including chopping, batonning and digging into a stump.

If you don't mind a 3rd video, here's one by "WeAllJuggleKnives" on the same knife with a few slight criticisms that the previous 2 didn't have - and boooo....no torture test:

and then I found this thread:

I think I might pick that one up for giggles...and at the current price of about $56.00.......I really think I can't go wrong...

I might have to tick off the wife on buying this one LOL

I'm probably as guilty as anyone on this, but when I think "hollow handle survival knives", I usually think "wilderness survival". But goofing around online today I found this and thought "man that could be a good urban survival blade".

The Schrade SCHF22 Tanto Boot Knife.

4.5" blade, single piece of steel construction, with glass breaker/skull crusher pommel. Sheath adjusts for several carry options, and the hollow handle could be used to stash emergency cash, contact info' etc......

Yes I was looking at those: These have got to be the smallest true hollow handle diameters of any ever made... They are not as cheap or as useful as the Schrades though, considering what you get for a heftier price... I wonder if they might make great multiple-carry throwers though: They certainly are unique...

One errata in one of my previous posts I wanted to point out: I described the Neeley SA9 as having a 3 mm wide edge base: I hadn't measured it, it just felt that blunt... I fact my heavily re-ground SA9 edge is 1.79 mm at the base, which is still nearly 4 times my Randall 14 at 0.5 mm, but admittedly not 6 times... Despite this, the SA9 is similar to my heavily re-ground TOPS Hellion at 1.8 mm, and so it is definitely borderline useable... Still, after several weeks of heavy in-field use, it would be turned into a nearly useless paperweight compared to a Randall, whose edge can be worn away over 1/8", without any thickening from 0.5 mm... I still like the SA9's precision grinding better, when looking at it on a shelf...

I notice that right after I reviewed the SA9, all those that were available -new- at an incredibly low price on Ebay are now all gone: 3 sold in less than a week at under $500, after months without a single sale, mine being the first after I lowered the seller to $460... All the other low-priced Hollow Handle Neeleys are gone as well, inluding several 7.5" at $450 (amazing bargain!) and even more of the 6.4" ones at $400...

Now all that is left are the prototypes sold by Mike Welze, starting around $900... Given the huge work needed to sharpen them, not so great a deal... Am I glad I have at least one now...
