THE Hollow Handle Knife Thread

UPS finally got it here late yesterday afternoon, after 2 days stranded in Nahsville, TN due to the winter storm.

First "un-boxing" observations are impressive, it's a big knife, but doesn't seem that heavy. Every millimeter of the 7.5" D2 blade, is razor sharp. Sheath is a nice molle compatible and fully ambidextrous sheath that comes with most Kizlyar fixed blades, just bigger. :)

Ruler laser etched into the blade, not sure how much you'd need it, but a nice touch.

Blade spine has a false edge and another section described by Kizlyar as "a specially shaped bevel designed for chopping bones and other hard materials so that the user does not need to risk damaging the main blade while performing these tasks" Neither is fully sharpened, but could be if someone wanted to. I plan to see how well that beveled section strikes a firesteel.

The hollow handle has an "O" ring seal, plus a waterproof capsule with a "kit" in it. I will revamp the kit, and since the handle has an "O" ring, may lose the capsule to get a little more room.

The "Survival" kit. Not much to it, needle and thread, snare wire, some storm matches, some fishing line, hooks and sinkers. 1 safety pin, and there was 1 band-aid but after removing all of it from the capsule, I could not wrap it tight enough to get it back in.
I call these a "better than nothing..but not by much" kits. :)

Already had this Kizlyar molle attachable pouch, so I moved it over to this knife, as part of a plan to build a "survival" rig on it.

Already battling our current snow storm!

So far, I like this knife, it's big and may not be that practical, but it seems very well made. I hope to get some time out playing with it to test it soon.

Love this beauty, this knife seem a best bang for what money can buy at its price range...I like very much comprensive sheath option too,i wonder how tough this knife can be,Kyzliar have very solid feedback as strong knives, this HH might be very good purchase

I'm in no way knocking this knife [the http://kizlyarsupreme.ru/survival-knives-tools/survivalist-x-aus-8-black-titanium] because I think it looks like a very capable tool...but my only reservation is the point in which the blade is attached. Even though the site lists very strenuous tests on the blade/handle attachment point, I'm still wary of that type of join in something I have to rely on.

Like I said...I'm not knocking this blade one bit...I'm just very picky on how my blades are built.

Thank you guys for all your thoughts and for sharing your opinions....

My conclusion is so far leading to three possible options of entry level, but reliable HH knives with very much functional designs.Of course, all three are production line options i think very much competitive to each other...I think Schrade HH blades are the best ratio of value for money from all, constructed of solid one piece of carbon steel,at the less than half price of Boker HH and 1/3rd price of Kyzliar Supreme HH blade...So Schrade-Boker-Kyzliar but also one particular model from Buck and both Aitor's HH seem very interesting pieces to be taken into account...

I had the buck master for 20years, most useless saw back ever. Absurdly heavy for the size of the knife too. Lot of guys loved them, I wasn't thrilled with it. Finally sold it. The Kyzliar looks cool and i'd like to play with one, but it doesn't excite me enough to buy it. The schrades look good too, just a little put off by the blatant copy of Chris Reeve. I've had the Aitor jungle king since the late 80s, tough knife gave it to my oldest daughter several years ago and she's abused it too lol.

You're correct, Dave. I love the Buckmaster, but the saw wasn't designed properly. The main grind line is too low, which binds the saw and adds unnecessary weight to the knife. For a production knife of the 80s, they did a fanastic job on the blade/handle joint. It ain't comin' apart.

Final Olive Drab 2mm paracord wrap on my Randall 18. It took 15' of this cord, almost to the inch to wrap the handle.

That looks really good, i love the od micro paracord. It doesn't show a lot of stains from sweat or oil and blood rinses off pretty easily.

Took a couple of new pics today, the Surv9 really is my favorite user. Just perfect size blade and cuts so very well.

Thanks Druid, it really has beautiful grinds and I swear that is the sharpest most penetrating point I've ever come across. First day I had it I was fondling it and managed to put just a little pressure on the tip with my thumb, really hurts when the tip touches the underside of your nail. I've dressed out a few hogs with it and it just really works well. I think that I will some day get Newt to do one just like it, 8inch instead of 9 and saber grind instead of hollow, pretty much my ideal knife. Keep the width just a little shorter maybe add a fuller just above the top grind. Epic combat survival knife.

You know another knife that is very similar to your SURV9 in overall size/shape Dave? The Randall Model 12 with a 14 grind! They seem almost identical in blade shape/size/proportions, although the Randall more often comes with bone handles rather than Micarta.

Nice, Chris! Why left hand carry? I noticed that you sheathed the Randall right hand. Also, does Martin do their own leather work. That's a beautiful sheath.

I'm a southpaw, the Randall pic was me not paying attention to how I sheathed it for the pic. :)

Far as I know Martin does his own sheath work.
