The idiot's guide to the AR-15 rifle (or an idiot building one)

Well it depends on what you already have. First of all you have to have a vise on a table. After that, it depends on if you really mean "build the upper". If so, you need lots of stuff from punches, front sight block, front sight tool, receiver block, barrel nut wrench, and also rear sight tools if your going to an A1 or A2 configuration. There is a good representation here: http://www.midwayusa.com/Static/ar-15VarmintRifleInstructions.aspx

Now if you plan on just buying a built barrel (with the FSB already installed) and a built flat top upper (with ejection cover and forward assist installed), then you really just need a receiver block, vise and torque wrench, not to mention buying the delta ring assembly as well.

Thats why its just easier to buy one built for you. For instance, here is a top of the line upper, all milspec: http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-M4-14-5-Upper-Receiver-Group-A2X-p/bcm-urg-m4-14%20a2x.htm. Now sure you could save a couple dollars building one completely yourself but after the investment of tools your really not saving much. Now the lower on the other hand is a different story. You dont really need any special tools at all, just what you have in your garage and you can save a lot there. The upper is really not worth it IMO.

Sorry for the long post :)

Ship one my way.

Any thoughts on the Magpul line of stocks? Are the other models that much better than the MOE? I like the looks of the ACS but I already have the CR123 storage insert coming with my grip so the storage thing is moot. I just don't want to dump a ton on a stock if it won't be noticeably better.

I tried out a CTR and settled on the MOE.

The CTR was nice and had a very solid feel to it but in the end it wasn't worth twice the price.

Well, I may be wrong, but the big feature of the CTR over the MOE seems to be that the CTR uses a friction grip versus the pin in the MOE.

The ACS is good for the battery storage, especially if you use a laser, those things eat batteries.

I'm going to get the MIAD grip, and I guess wait for the spare bolt insert to come out, so I'll probably go with the ACS for battery storage.

no only on ak's and dont like them execpt for whackin somebody over the head. there too heavy

cricket

The CTR also accommodates quick detach swivels for slings.

I have the ASAP sling attachment so that won't be a concern.

Is the friction that big of an improvement? I want adjustable but I can't imagine that I will move it often once I find its happy place.

It makes less noise, that's about it.

So functionally there is no difference?

Specs:
MOE, Mil-Spec (w/ Rubber Butt-Pad, 0.30")

* Weight, Stock: 0.52 lb.
* Weight, w/ Rec. Extension: 0.82 lb.
* Length, Stock: 6.88 in.
* LOP Adjustment Range: 3.3 in.
* LOP, M4 Collapsed: 10.4 in.
* LOP, M4 Extended: 13.7 in.

CTR, Mil-Spec (w/ Rubber Butt-Pad, 0.30")
o Weight, Stock: 0.48 lb.
o Weight, w/ Rec. Extension: 0.79 lb.
o Length, Stock: 6.60 in.
o LOP Adjustment Range: 3.3 in.
o LOP, M4 Collapsed: 10.1 in.
o LOP, M4 Extended: 13.4 in.

So $40 more dollars to drop .64 ounces? I guess that answers that for me. MOE.
