The idiot's guide to the AR-15 rifle (or an idiot building one)

Unless you're going into a combat zone, having to sneak up and kill haji in the wee hours of the morning, going from the MOE to the CTR isn't much of an upgrade.

IMO, only real reason to upgrade from the MOE is if you want the ACS for battery storage, you like the UBR for some reason (I don't), or you want one of the precision stocks.

Weeeeellll,

Decided to put my LPK in the lower receiver today. Good news and bad news. Good news is, my LPK came with a bunch of extra parts -- extra detents, springs, even an extra bolt release lever. Everything that I could assemble went in fairly well, except the roll pin to the bolt release, which I mushroomed a bit, so it took some beating to get it in, but it's in and doesn't bind.

Bad news is I couldn't put everything together because the LPK lack one part. Guess what it is? Yep, the friggin HAMMER SPRING!!:mad:

What's worse is I went to Brownell's to order one $6 -- not bad -- and of course checked out with almost $100 worth of stuff.

Damn it. Brownell's is like a crack dealer for guns.

DPMS is fine, about the same as Bushmaster.

Just stay away from Rock River Arms LPKs unless you are going to replace the trigger from the get-go.

RRA trigger are made from MIM (Metal Injection Molding). Done right, it's better than cast parts, done wrong, and it's worse than cast parts. Either way, they are worse than forged parts. RRA have had bad batches and the triggers sometimes began to malf -- having to be manually reset, and at times completely break and jam the weapon.

The action of the trigger itself is good, they just don't always hang in there. These problems have happened far more with RRA than any other trigger I know of.

Wow, that certainly bears more research on my part before purchasing.

What manufacturer has the best reputation?

Colt, Armalite, LMT for the complete LPK, DPMS, and Bushmaster are good, albeit a bit gritty.

Geissele for just the trigger.

Doesn't say if they are in stock or not, but Del_Ton has an LPK: Del-Ton LPK

Bushmaster LPKs are in stock at Brownell's and Bushmaster.com

Pretty much every other LPK seems to be out of stock.

If you already bought the RRA LPK, I wouldn't cry over it. That the triggers break more often than others doesn't mean they do it all the time, and there's plenty of people that buy RRA guns and parts and love them.

The Geiselle trigger is the cadillac of AR triggers, but at that price, I can buy a complete MagPul ACS stock kit with the stock, buffer tube, buffer spring, buffer, receiver plate and castle nut, or buy a Troy BUIS set.

Contrary to what you may read on barf.com, I've had several DPMS, Bushmaster and Stag ARs and they all worked fine, and most people who bought them, or built rifles with their parts had no problems. I think a lot of it is guys pissed that they spent $3000 on what they thought was an uber-rifle and found out a $1000 Bushmaster is just fine.

For a good two stage trigger, check out the Frank White's Compass Lake Engineering trigger. Frank used to make this trigger for Bushmaster, until BM copied it and now sells it as their own.

I've read that two-stage triggers are beneficial for precision/target shooting but not so much for plinking and SHTF use. What do all y'all think?

I'm not the guy to ask since I'm prejudiced, that CLE trigger is on all three of my AR-15's and my AR-10A4 Carbine.

This is the guy I'd ask if the CLE trigger is good for hunting jackrabbits, I hear he's pretty good.
