The idiot's guide to the AR-15 rifle (or an idiot building one)

Mine started out as a long term build but I couldn't handle it, I have impulse issues, so I sold everything that wasn't bolted down and finished it.:D

haha. I didnt even try to do a long term build as I also have the same issues. Just bought mine complete straight up. But for the price I paid, It wouldnt have been any cheaper to build.

This Varmint one took forever due to 8 month backup for left handed upper but it gave me the time to save and buy what I wanted for it.

speaking of "long term builds" i've got a bunch of parts in the parts cabinet... i just need to toss some LPKs, BCGs and a few lowers and some furniture in there and shake it hard. complete rifles will tumble out.

let's see; complete A1 kit from the rifle i broke the cast receiver on, two middy uppers that need FF rails because the company that built them put the FSB too far forwards (these were a special order back in the early days of middys) so i need two DD Omega rails, two 20" uppers, one an A2 and one a DCM HBAR have A2 HGs for them now, but a rail for the HBR wand a MOE for the A2 would be nice, all those have flattops, the 20"s need optics and BUIS, everything else has DD or Larue BUIS, then i have a cheapie 16" barrel with an A1/C7 upper, and a SS bbl with a flat top.

have one rifle that needs the A2 upper receiver swapped for a flattop.

and *several* complete rifles.

and the latest is a S&W 15-22. of course i got one of the last ones before they started shipping the versions with the flashhiders. VERY nice, just needs to get the muzzle threaded, but that's purely cosmetic. there's just no NEED for a FH on a 16" .22

lots of long term stuff going on here. unfortunately it's not going anywhere fast because i'm recuperating from eye problems and still trying to get back to work. can't aim anything right eyed any more since i have no lens on the right now. have some .308s that i can't really shoot any more that i need to sell. 2 HK91s, 2 Rem bolt guns. if i can move those that will help pay for other goodies.

however, if i didn't have all that stuff floating around and as starting from scratch, i'd be looking into complete upper and lower halves from DD or Bravo.

Nice varmint rig Lefty, shotgunner and I were talking SPR builds the other night. Heck if I bought a Junglas instead, I'd save myself $1500. :D

What kind of stock did you go with for your lower Cpl Pun?

i'm bumping this back up because i'm an idiot trying to build an a.r. and in need of a guide.

i got my LPK and a mag, haven't assembled the lower yet, though.
found a magpul MOE stock set with milspec lower extension, buffer and spring that i'm about to order, fun days ahead!... when i find an upper...

Congrats on the build progress Otis.

Looking at building a lightweight built for the wife with pink furniture.

haven't gotten to start the build yet, adam... just getting parts, i guess that's important, though. hopefully i'll have time to assemble the lower this weekend. been preoccupied with work and reptiles and mustelids...

thanks dave. i've been working 6 day weeks lately so i'm worn out every day... it might be a while before i build it, but the overtime should help fund this addiction...

One thing I'd add to building a lower is to have a large box to actually hold the lower inside when you put in some of the springs. If they go boing on you they'll be inside the box (I have no idea how I came to this conclusion !!) I think it was the front pivot spring that educated me. Good Luck-it is great to do your own build, you learn a lot about the workin's.

I just tossed my ESEE lower in the Safe until stash cash becomes free flowing again... no rush after getting lower in hand :D
have yet to decide if I want a SBR (10.5"-11.5" or 14.5") barrel or a varmint gun or just a plain ole' M4 type carbine.....

Has anyone tried a variety of BUISes? Eventually, when I get together enough scratch, my carbine's going to be sporting an Aimpoint. I finished zeroing my carry handle (using the Improved Battlesight Zero), so it's going to go in the box. I'm torn between a Troy or a Daniel Defense - concerned that the DD might get in the way once I have a holo installed.

I had the same problem for awhile Tony. Finally decided on carbine and varmint due to added paperwork and cost on a SBR. 16" on the carbine suited me fine. JMHO

Plus to add to the Cpl. those SBRs get beat up from the recoil. You have to start playing around with different grades of heavy buffers, and from what I've heard, a FA bolt carrier helps in the adding mass department.

Paperwork & $200 no biggie if I take my time...I think the SBR would be Freaking Sweet...I know it has a limited role if I go SBR but man o man ESEE SBR with a 100 Delta drum & a SF LED with vertical grip would be a cool home defense gun right ?

Some people hate having the rear sight (some hate having the front sight) in their field of view when using any optic.

On red dots it's not too much of a problem for me. But I'd recommend a folding sight like the Troy or Samson simply because at some point you may want to mount a magnified optic, and then the rear sight being in view sucks, if you can even leave it on, depending on the eye relief of the scope. The front sight won't be seen on a magnified optic due to the depth of field and the way magnified optics work.
