I like this question and look forward to some of our historians answering precisely. I’ll share what I remember.

There was a series of changes from the first gen that didn’t happen all at once. The clip was updated to the current version, pivot was updated to the current smaller version, the nail nick was updated to what most people think of as gen 2.

In 2012 I remember some transition Mnandi with new clip, new pivot, old nail tick. So there is an approximate time frame.

Yes, this was my reference point too until I read your post and also the only change I was aware of (I might have forgotten all about the pivot change though).

The gen 2 pivot is smaller. There are some great pictures and mentions of the differences in here. Lone_Wolfe has an amazing collection of Mnandi’s and the info is fantastic as well.

It was a 4 step process that started in 2011, finished in 2012.

I have always liked the look of CRK, I just couldn’t buy something that had 60 to 74% lock up. I like the Ceramic ball feature. I really like the Umunm, it’s just so right in the action. But I daily care the knife I got from a Banned member.


I now run CRK grease in it, to cut down on shit getting into the bearings.

It is nice that we seem to be seeing plain larges stay in stock at least for a little while for those that want one. I was curious where else had them and I also came across them at KSF like modernflame. Besides that action concepts on eBay has at least 12 of them now.

As a bonus for the lefty’s out there, true north knives apparently found two lefty tanto micarta Sebenza 21’s ( a large and small) that are new old stock. I have a small righty in that same configuration and it’s a great combination.
