The Knife Life (Minor Topics and Random Stuff Thread)

So I'm thinking I might sell a few more knives and just grab a small seb 21. I don't ever use my sage 2 or 586 anymore, but I still really love them.

Post which knives you love but no longer use, and tell me your opinion on selling a few to fund a single better knife. In kinda torn right now...

I just pooped...

The only knives I have but don't use are pretty much because they are too beat up to sell--SOG Mini X-Ray Vision--sharpened so many times by an amateur (me) its no longer a tanto and is pretty much worthless now; and the Cold Steel Recon 1--beat to hell, pivot screw went awol of its own accord.

Everything else gets used or its sold.

I've been trying to sell my Brian Tighe to fund either a CF Sebenza or an engagement ring, but so far to no avail.

So, I've been thinking about this for a few days now, but didn't know if it was "worth" making a thread for.

I've had about a year or twos break from knife forums, and only recently started to hang out here again. One thing that I had not expected was that there were a lot of knives that I'd looked into buying a year or two ago, and then said "I'll get these later when I've got more funds" that are simply no longer available/manufactured/sold. Specifically the AG Russell Deer Hunter and AG Russell 3in Carbon Fiber lockback.

My question is pretty simple. How long do knife models "last" out on the market. Is it normal to have a certain model only be around for a few years? I know some iconic models just keep selling and selling, so of course they'll be available for longer periods, but I guess what about the other ones? Any idea how to know if they're going to be unavailable in the future?

Anyway, thanks for the thread :).

A bunch of them go away quickly, and it's almost impossible to tell ahead of time which ones those will be.
Buy what you like while you can!

The small 21 is definitely a good choice. If it's a user, you might want to consider the micarta, it looks and feels a lot better (you should definitely handle the knife first if you haven't, though). On the topic of selling a few knives, just go with your gut instinct. For me, I would sell them, someone could be using and enjoying them instead of being put away in a drawer to look at every once in a while.

Thanks for the input!

Hmm, I'm still not sure about selling them though.

It's kinda complicated because 1- I still really like them, and 2- they are pretty well used so I wouldn't get much for them anyway. The 586 has been sharpened a few too many times, has been deassisted, and has a homemade omega spring on one side. And the sage 2 is in good condition except it's been oversharpened like the 586 and has some deeper scratches on the blade.

I'm just not sure if it's worth selling them since I couldn't get much for them and I still kinda like them as well

But I need cash for a seb!!!!:grumpy:

I'm new to knife ownership and I only have two knives so far (a Skyline and a BM 551BK Griptilian). I'm really enjoying learning/shopping/comparing stuff online. But I live in an uptight city (DC) and my townhouse doesn't have anything you'd call a yard. I'd probably fit in best in this town with a tiny little pen knife in my pocket and a box cutter at home. Which kinda sucks, right? It's like I need to take up hunting just to find a better reason to own and use a nice knife! If I bought a handsome Kizer Ki403B1 I'd be afraid to ever carry it or use it out of the house around here. Oh, and DC has a 3" blade limit too. Harrumph!

Welcome to the forum!

It really sucks that you live in such a hostile area. My best advice is to get knives that aren't even remotely scary, otherwise you may run into some issues.

Sage advice (oh man, can I even EDC a Sage 2?!). And thanks for the warm welcome and for entertaining my noob post in a wide open thread that will mostly touch on less stale subjects. =)

Well, I decided to list the knives on the exchange after all. Check them out if you're interested:thumbup:

In other news, I decided to cut up some cardboard and carve some wood with my Delica today, and I noticed that there really isn't any damage to the edge, despite the ~30* inclusive angle and supposedly chippy VG-10 steel. Hmmm, good to see this thing can take more than opening mail and shaving arm hair! :D

Haha, that's great:thumbup:

This thread is very much the right place for your post. Hell, I could probably even rename it "the newb thread", considering what it's primarily intended for:)

I'd like other poster's opinions on the Spyderco Domino.Of the 3 spyderco's I own (Manix, Sage) its the only one I'm not too sure about liking. A week after I got it I noticed some of the carbon fiber strands fraying along the side. Is this common amongst other Owners of this knife? In its favor it does flip smoothly.

Is it really necessary to have to get a loan from the bank to purchase a nice knife?

Well, my credit-card bill last month was pretty high, so had to sell off some very pretty NIB folders which I only look at...which really hurt.
So, for me, the answer is YES, but I try to pay off the loan within a month so I pay minimal interest on the loan.
The loan is, therefore, temporary and well worth it.

There are too many useless threads. For instance, I'm new; What knife should I get? and the other biggie is "What knife are you carrying today?

In case #1, please use the Search function...there is SO MUCH help available there. Perhaps we need a "rolling stickie" (picks up the latest models; discards old ones out of favor), which combines about ten or twenty of the latest threads, and then direct the new guys to it.
In case #2, make the thread worth while. You could at least collect some data from a thread like this, IF it were organized like a poll, and you could stipulate (and total) the Spydercos, Benchmades, Striders, as well as the approximate blade-length or blade-steel. This could be helpful. But what does this thread accomplish in its present form? And, it goes on and on...
