The Knife Life (Minor Topics and Random Stuff Thread)

It would seem that we could just shut down the general knife discussion area and have a sticky saying 'just buy the paramilitary 2..' Problem solved.

I think I'm going to buy that Delica 4 in October, should I get the brown one or the blue one? Oh geez I'm just as bad as the rest of you..

I'm new to knife ownership and I only have two knives so far (a Skyline and a BM 551BK Griptilian). I'm really enjoying learning/shopping/comparing stuff online. But I live in an uptight city (DC) and my townhouse doesn't have anything you'd call a yard. I'd probably fit in best in this town with a tiny little pen knife in my pocket and a box cutter at home. Which kinda sucks, right? It's like I need to take up hunting just to find a better reason to own and use a nice knife! If I bought a handsome Kizer Ki403B1 I'd be afraid to ever carry it or use it out of the house around here. Oh, and DC has a 3" blade limit too. Harrumph!
I live around NYC but in the suburbs so I can't carry much in the way of fun stuff either I do carry a pen knife and just recently figured I needed something a little more fun that though

Still love my Spydercos but can't really edc them in the city. Anyhow I rotate this chambriard now.

There are too many useless threads. For instance, I'm new; What knife should I get? and the other biggie is "What knife are you carrying today?

In case #1, please use the Search function...there is SO MUCH help available there. Perhaps we need a "rolling stickie" (picks up the latest models; discards old ones out of favor), which combines about ten or twenty of the latest threads, and then direct the new guys to it.
In case #2, make the thread worth while. You could at least collect some data from a thread like this, IF it were organized like a poll, and you could stipulate (and total) the Spydercos, Benchmades, Striders, as well as the approximate blade-length or blade-steel. This could be helpful. But what does this thread accomplish in its present form? And, it goes on and on...

In defense of pointless threads (I dunno?), people come to a forum for more than information. Some people are looking for connection or a sense of community. Live feedback from living people is the goal for some. I think that's OK and expected. And sometimes just by having a live discussion, some new angle or interesting point comes out. It's just a conversation. Repetitive, pointless banter happens daily at water coolers across the planet.

I'm also guessing there is not ad revenue here for page views (?). Otherwise, posting would be encouraged in any form...

Welcome to the fourm! Have you been living in DC for long? I used to live there, now Im just outside of it. But I always carried my Emerson CQC8 with me no problems. Just gotta make sure your not going into any touristy areas or places with security checks is all.

cchu518, that Chambriard is great lookin'! I'd never heard of them before.

ericzhao517, thanks! Yeah, I've lived in DC for more than ten years now and was out in Arlington for nearly as long before that. I hope you're right and thanks for the encouragement. The CQC8 is a honking blade; almost all my EDC choices would be smaller than that. You're also right that I pretty much never visit the touristy/federal/city buildings downtown so maybe I'm overstating things.

Anyone ever use their EDC in a restaurant? I asked the wife if I could this past weekend. She said it was not appropriate, therefore there is no other answer. But still...

Another question: are knives he, she, or it? Cars are usually "she." What's the right way to refer to your beloved blade?

To be honest I dislike both of these knives. The Paramilitary's blade is too leaf shaped and the finger choil too small to be used in a chest lever grip. On the Endura the backlock makes it difficult to close one handed, especially when numb. These are however just symptoms of a deeper issue I have with these knives. Their flat handles and slightly forward tilted blade are designed to work well in the saber, hammer, and reverse grips but can be a pain to use in precision grips like the chest lever, knee lever, or skinning grip. No matter what anyone says I also would not consider them tactical knives for they lack any sort of guard, be it in the design of a flipper or handle, to prevent your hand from running up on the blade when stabbing. As thrusting is the primary tactic that should be employed with a small knife I cannot consider either of these options to be tactical in their design.

My Knife Philosophy
Personally I own 3 types of knives: beater/work knives, multitool's, and art knives. The beater knives are my tactical/Outdoor/EDC blades that are used heavily, purely functional, and usually on the cheap side so I don't feel bad if it breaks. My multitools are also mostly functional with the added benefit of being relatively people friendly (People don't even flinch when you pull out a Swiss Army Knife). Art Knives are those I carry to demonstrate the craft and skills of knife and tool makers or knives that have personal meaning to me. While these knives are used I don't abuse them in the same way I do my beater knives.

I believe that guess would be wrong. Quality posting seems to be encouraged. Pointless posting seems to be discouraged, even at the cost of losing "hits." Get the feeling its a "quality over quantity" thing.

Nice post medcommander. It is refreshing to hear an opinion on the PM2 and Delica that runs contrary to the constant love they receive. I have a different philosophy to you when it comes to blades, I mostly just admire them and spend far more time reading about them than using them (probably true for most of us here) so for the most part I just buy what I find attractive aesthetically. I will say this on the Delica, I do have 2 already (not the ffg version) and I actually find my RAT 2 more comfortable to use.
