The Knife Life (Minor Topics and Random Stuff Thread)

Yeah, that's pretty sexy!

Pros - cheap, brute tough, functional - works for everything.

Cons - none that I can think of.

My SP1 has been through hell. My whole family used it for quite a few years as our only knife. We used it for everything, and it came through with flying colors. We were struggling pretty hard back then. It was pretty much the only knife I owned that was longer than a 4" blade. It was everything from a kitchen knife to a wood chopper, home defense, even a tent stake a time or two. It's a great knife. I really couldn't recommend it more highly.

I have no experience with the other blade you asked about, but if it's anything like the SP1, it's a winner.

Thanks man, I really appreciate the response. Talk about a ringing endorsement for ontario:thumbup:

As you said, they are probably pretty similar and both good so I think I'll get the sp6 for the extra sexiness factor:)

What's the proper way to swipe the ESEE 4 down the sharpmaker? I've tried a few different variations, but nothing seems to work....

So, what worked?

I dug out an old course ceramic rod from a different sharpening set I used to have, laid it on the desk, and swiped at a slightly steeper angle than before while swiping in a continuously curved motion. So basically I actually matched the bevel that was already there rather than matching a bevel that I WANTED TO BELIEVE was there (it turns out that it was actually more obtuse than I thought) :rolleyes:I'm not really sure how I feel about it though.... I almost feel like the edge beat me:o

It Likely has a very obtuse angle on it now, but at least it's finally hair popping....

EDIT: now that I think about it, the problem I had might have been from having rounded the edge off too many times so that it was essentially a very obtuse convex. Then when I went for the steep angle with the course ceramic, I took off the shoulders and brought it back to a point. IDK?

Well, good job! You can always change the angle if you want to. I usually strop mine on pretty fine grit sandpaper to get it where I want. That, of course, makes the edge convex, but it is usually close enough with the angle I hold to maintain it on the Sharpmaker. Doing so, of course, changes the very edge back to straight, but it works for me. As long as I like the angle, and it's sharp, nothing else matters.

Hehe, you sure?:o

Oh jeez..... There's no end in sight:p

I still hadn't ordered the sp6 yet, when this happened....

Literally while I was in the process of looking up small sebenza knife porn (convincing myself that when I got it, it would be the last knife I ever needed), I stumbled across this:

So I got to thinking..... My 0801blk was around 175 new, and it hardly shows any wear yet. Do you guys think it would be a good idea to trade it for a new or lightly used sr2? I think in terms of materials I would be stepping down a bit (Ti to Al, and Elmax to Slepnier), but I can already tell that I would like the sr2 a hell of a lot more. In fact, I've been halfheartedly trying to get one for the past few months now, but I kinda got the 0801 in lieu of it.
Not that I don't like the 0801, it's a great knife. But It doesn't see as much use because it's cutting geomety is so thick and its bulky in the pocket.

Id really rather have both, but money's kinda tight right now. So do you think I should go for it or not?

Ah, this knife business is a fickle one..... You want what you want, when you want it. We have all been in your shoes before. Follow your desires, and you will have scratched the itch, and be happy.... momentarily....

Good lord! Sounded like Yoda that did....

Lol:D

That was honestly a better answer than I had hoped for

I think I'll go ahead and list it for trade.... Who knows how long I'll have to wait for a bite, so i still probably have some time to think about it.

I've heard they cut like lightsabers:p
With the right edge, that they do! Love mine, and always looking to add more. I recently opted for another knife instead of my 4th Sebenza, but ima cookin up somethin'.

So an update....

I got an offer for my 0801. The member wants to trade me his green forum sprint native 5 in S110v. At first I was like nah..... But then I was like "wait....oh hell yes!!" :D

Id like to try s110v and the native 5 is a cool knife, but even if it turns out I dont want it I could easily flip it for profit or re-trade it for another really nice knife (probably better than the 0801). So I think I'd be trading up by doing it:thumbup:

I would say "hopefully the member isn't reading this....", but it seems like he knows what it's worth, so I don't think I'll change his mind by saying this.

Cool pic. My ideal is a small 21 with cf inlays from bladehq, but I have no idea when (or if) they'll ever get any more in stock....

Mmmmm yummy!

Hey, so if this deal works out, I think I'm going to start a "journey to a small seb" that I try to accomplish solely through trading up. You know how cool that would be!? Oh man

If I get the native, what do you think would be the next trade to keep going up? I've seen them going for well over two hundred on the bay, so maybe I'm closer to a seb than I thought!

Really cool idea, and I've seen it work out before. Personally though, I'd keep the Native, it's so cool! You might be better off just saving and buying a used small Sebenza! Just my $0.02. It's only a matter of time after your first that you buy your second and start rotating then with each other and pairing them with other knives!

Related note, I passed on a small Insingo with my birth date, recently. So, so stupid...
