The Knife Life (Minor Topics and Random Stuff Thread)

Really cool idea, and I've seen it work out before. Personally though, I'd keep the Native, it's so cool! You might be better off just saving and buying a used small Sebenza! Just my $0.02. It's only a matter of time after your first that you buy your second and start rotating then with each other and pairing them with other knives!

Related note, I passed on a small Insingo with my birth date, recently. So, so stupid...

I'll try my hardest to stop at one. I cant guarantee that I'll be able to, but at least I can try right?:p

Sucks about that birthday insingo though! :(

WAIT, NOBODY REPLY!!! Were at 420 posts right now! Dammit! 421 :D

You should trade it for a red paperclip. You could wind up with a house!

I've thought about it a bit, and I think the next logical step would be a BM940-1. It's in the mid 200 price range and its reasonable to think I might be able to score one. From there, I'm not sure what I would do..... But then again, I'm already getting WAY ahead of myself:)

Wooooo! I've secured the native! He's gonna ship tomorrow so I'll have it before the weeks end.

Probably my best trade ever. Can't wait till it gets here so I can see whether I like it or not. My first higher end spyderco was the standard native 5, and I didn't much care for the egos on it, but other than that it was a great knife:thumbup: Smoothest backlock ever. And very solid at the same time

I predict I'll love the s110v, but I still think ill end up trading it off again. The s90v on the 940-1 has more than enough wear resistant for me, and the cf handle is much better than the native. Plus it'll give me a chance to see how I like the 940 platform.

And if I don't feel like settling there either? Well, I'll just keep trading up!:D

I don't know where else to put this:

I recently realized all of my knives have a small but consistent burr on the presentation side. They were sharp before but now I can't help but think of that. I've read all the threads I could, watched some videos, everything short of buying new equipment (though admittedly I could use a real strip). I cannot get this burr off. It just flips and flips. This is s30v, vg10, super blue, and 1095.

I'm seriously considering just selling all but a few of my knives and getting a Rexford RUT.

Unfortunately the recent release of the CF S110V Native has seemingly reduced the demand/desire for the 2013 forum version. (at least seems that way to me) Oh well, I like the 801 :)

How awkward of you to post here:o:D lol jk

Nah, don't worry. They're still selling quite well on eBay. If I can't trade it up, I can still get a decent amount for it.:)

And besides, I might even like it enough to keep it...... At least for a while

My best advice for getting rid of a burr is to go through finer and finer grits while sharpening, then strop the heck out of it on leather with some good compound. That'll take it off.

BUT, if you want to sell off some knives, you know where to start buddy! You know what I've got my eye out for!

Yeah, I'm thinking I need to get a good strop.

Have you seen my #23? Not that I'm actually selling it (yet), but since you're into them here's a pic:

The native should be here tomorrow!

In other news, I was sharpening my 770cf today. Managed to get a NASTY edge on it. But the best part is that I was finally able to sharpen the whole thing all the way to the tippy-tip

Now I can practically STAB the hair off my leg!:D

I was reading a thread on H1, before I got my H1 Dragonfly. In the thread, they said H1 held a crappy edge so they would sharpen it and then slice "thick cardboard" and lastly resharpen it again. They acted like somehow that gave H1 better edge retention through a magical process called "Work Hardening".
I think I want a sample of what ever they were smoking!

I knew it was garbage, but I needed to have that theory verified. Which you guys did. If I can find the tread, I will copy/paste a link.

Oh boy, the amount of ignorance in this and previous posts is astounding.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Work_hardening

It is a thing.

Yes, we all know H-1 serrated knives can reach crazy hardnesses at the edge. Even sal himself has commented on it.

But that's due to the process of grinding the serrations onto the knife. Nothing you can do in your daily life will be able to 'work harden' a knife blade....

Yes, however a blanket statement that work hardening is "garbage" or not a thing is just untruthful.

There is no work hardening. Period.

In the context of a knife's heat treat being ruined by quickly cutting cardboard, or a similar material, it's quite truthfully a foolish sentiment. That is the context in which it was discussed, unless I'm mistaken.

Technically, "work" hardening IS garbage, because it implies that your knife blade gets harder through use.....

"Grinding" hardening would be more accurate, but I guess that doesn't have the same ring to it:rolleyes:

So at work today breaking down boxes after the weekly shipment came in. My assistant manager saw my Kershaw Skyline....

She Said "Oh wow thats a knife knife, its so big!"

Made me chuckle :) Good thing i left my CQC8 at home haha
