The Knife Life (Minor Topics and Random Stuff Thread)

I recently purchased a Boker plus urban trapper for use as a work/dress knife. My standard EDC away from work is a leatherman skeletool CX.

I work in a hospital, so it's not necessarily really PC to carry a knife with you. The knife is amazingly lightweight and I love the length and slimness. It's also just beautiful. I carry it in the back pocket of my scrubs. Two weeks ago I reached into my pocket to grab my wallet and sliced a nice deep cut in my fingertip of my index finger. The small flipper had moved against the side of the pocket, opening the blade.

I know carry it against the more medial side of the pocket so the side of the pocket prevents it from opening. I'm still loving the blade despite getting bitten. I'm just glad it didn't open and stab me in the ass when I sat down. This knife is an incredible value. I think an anodizing treatment by Maprik (maybe blue or purple handle with gold clip) would look great: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...ting-stonewashing-carbidizing-and-more!/page2 I'm a little hesitant to send it in to be anodized, as it's supposedly a real bastard to disasemble (many tiny loose bearings), and also it seems a bit expensive ($30-$40) to do for a knife that is only $75

Welp, my impulses win again.....

Just ordered an m390 ritter mini grip from Knifeworks

I've got so many things to buy already, but I just couldn't pass it up. Considering the price for a customized mini with even just s30v is like 140, this knife is a steal at 129! I always wanted to try a ritter mini, and the m390 just pushed me over the edge. It's been absent from my collection ever since I sold my 586.

The Contego and benza will have to wait I guess......

This should be in my mailbox in a few days....

Congrats!

You'll love it

(had to edit this..... It said condolences! That is NOT what I had meant to post)

Hey so am I the only one who wants to see more red knives? Like red g10, aluminum, etc?

I think a red/black color scheme looks sick if it's done right, but there don't seem to be many knives out there with this look going on.

One of them is the sr2, but it's a little pricy for me right now, especially considering that I already have too many knives on my to-buy list....

I love red schemes too, but it must not be a popular color for knives, because I have never really seen it.

Yeah, I suppose. But I also remember kershaw doing a run of red g10 skylines a while back, and those seem to be very sought after on the secondary market. I think it's more likely that red is harder to produce. For instance, it's not possible to anodize titanium red. And maybe red g10 is more difficult to make/not cost effective compared to how many people just prefer standard black? What with the whole tactical craze going on right now....

I also heard that Benchmade's grip line uses slightly different materials for each color of handle, each having slightly different strength properties, so maybe it's impossible to do red without compromising rigidity and strength? Idk, but I do know that they have a ton of options for handle color, but no red..... Even if it weren't popular, you'd think it would still be an option.... Hmmm

Yea I thought about that, but for the plastics isn't it just a dye?

You'd think.....

But no, certain colors are made from different materials, so there must be some sort of connection. Black are noryl gtx, while some other colors are valox, etc.
Maybe red just isn't possible....

In other news, I'm getting kinda worried about my mini grip. I still haven't recieved any notification of shipping and it's already been two days now. I went back to see if I had done something wrong, and I saw something about priority mail being only for Hawaii and Alaska. Naturally, I freaked out. But then I looked further into it, and it turns out that most likely what they meant was that shipping to either of those two places could only be done through priority mail. Still, I'm a bit concerned about whether there was any confusion......
But then again, it's the weekend. I'll bet it's gonna ship out tomorrow and I'll have it by Wednesday or Thursday. Here's hoping

I've always admired the red blur but I don't personally like using blades with a recurve, the only blur I ever bought was the cheap one they made in limited quantities, found out when it showed up that it was 420hc, no biggy I guess, fun to play with and resharpen every time I use it (it's in with my camping stuff and does whittling and such)

The Blade HQ exclusive DPX HEST 2.0 with red G10 and black blade comes to mind. I did a quick search though and it didn't seem like they turned up on their website.

First, great idea for a thread. However, after reading through the entire thread, there is a noticeable lack of participation from those of us who prefer Traditionals over Tacticals. Don't get me wrong for year I carried OHO "tactical folders (Spyderco, Benchmade, Gerber, Kershaw etc) but as I get older, (I just turned 60) and since retirement I find the tacticals stay in the drawer and I mostly carry Case and Buck Stockman folders and Victorinox SAKs. They are just more useful. Even when I carried my Benchmade AFCK daily, I found myself reaching for my medium stockman for most tasks. So I finally just left them in the drawer.

I don't think many of us prefer "tacticals"...... Modern folders aren't automatically "tactical"

For instance, would you consider the Delica a tactical knife? I wouldn't, and yet it's been talked about a lot in this particular thread.

I agree with Krissig, there is a difference between modern and tactical. For me personally, knives that are quickly deployable like Benchmade are much easier to use for work because of their quick and easy deployment action. At home though I love to use the more traditional knives that I have (not many in my case)

Thread needs moar traditional you say? Here ya go:

It don't get much more traditional than "ol yeller". (Even though he's not very old YET)

If you want a patina like that, just leave a slice o mater on each side for about 15 minutes, then wash it off.

The mini grip gets here tomorrow. Can't wait to try it out.

In other news, I've been spending some time browsing the CRK forum lately, and I'm loving what I'm seeing.

That is, endless sebenza porn:D

It's gotten me even more hyped about getting a small 21 soon

I would recommend getting one with a graphic or something, my small 21 was great (it's a CRK), but it needed some more to make it interesting.

I started a thread on the CRK forum about just that, and so far I think I've decided just to go for the plain version for now. But meh, we'll see. I could always change my mind by the time Im ready to order.

Ok yea I dont want to change the meaning of this thread, but that's cool, and honestly in the end it will be your knife and knowing it is yours is good enough.

Beware of the seller "Stealth Rabbit" on big river. Ordered a large Vaquero and they sent me the medium. Disappointed is an understatement. They claimed they'd reimburse me for the shipping but I'm not gonna hold my breath.
