The Knife of 2014

I was on duty last night through to this morning. Fortunately the extent of my efforts was to drive up to MT Keira in the little truck, watch the fireworks at Wollongong harbour from afar with my family and neighbours thereby avoiding the horrendous crowd scene down there.
I had to think about this but the most carried knives for 2014....drum roll.... the envelope please....were.... in order of right to left....most carried about my person....during the year ...were .....
drum roll....FIND OUT WHEN WE COME BACK AFTER THIS (I hate it when they do that)

Opinel #10,Camillus from Evan with jatoba scales and Indian Paintbrush #47 Viper.

That is a very nice knife. Congrats

My knife purchase of the year would have to be this Frank Buster Fight'n Rooster "Black Widow" prototype stockman from 1978.
Mint in the box, and with some of the nicest deeply jigged bone I've ever handled.

My knife of the year is "george", of course:

Gifted to my by Sarah.

My knife of the year has been not the most expensive or good looking of my collection, nor indeed my favourite knife of my collection, but for it's great utility and massive sentimental value I have to go with a present from a new old friend.

It's even in my pocket right now.

The answer to this question is pretty easy for me. I carried my #73 literally every day this year to see if I could. I can, but I don't like it. I'm too much of a knife nut. Tomorrow I'm going back to having a selection. I guess the #73 will be my primary carry, to be supplemented as the mood strikes me.

Nice thread Jack.It just goes to show how we all differ in our tastes but are united in our love for traditionals.

This old 1930-36 Imperial Stockman was my favorite pocket knife to carry in 2014.

I actually got it in 2013, but carried it the most throughout 2014.
It was the orange marbled celluloid and punch that caught my attention on ebay,( I have a thing for orange and punches.) but after receiving it and carrying it for a while I came to appreciate how slim it is.
Unlike most stockman's it has very slim blades making for a very nice pocket friendly, multi bladed knife.
Compared to the 8OT & 34OT it is down right anorexic, but that's what makes it such a pleasure to carry.
Built in the days before shell covers, it has solid ns bolsters, solid cell covers & a pinned shield.
And the springs are still strong after 80 some years.
The slim blade is a heck of a slicer too, comparable to one of the Opinels I carried for a short while.

But like I said, the Imperial was my favorite...

until I received my 2014 BF Traditional Forum Stag Jack.
I got lucky with my SJ because it came with nice slim covers.I just smoothed down some ridges to make it hand friendly and stained it to get rid of the whiteness after the sanding.
It is such a beauty and a pleasure to hold & use that I haven't been able to carry anything else as my daily user.
The voters really hit the nail on the head with this knife IMHO and I gotta thank Charlie & gang once again for bringing this beauty to life.

Nice and slim.

I had to take it out for a test run after making it mine.

And now after a couple of months of use.
This'll be the knife of the century for me.

Happy New year all!

The proliferation of GEC 15s in this thread has to mean something. I think the capped end model 15 balances incredibly well and the spearpoint offers good length and plenty of belly. If I had a caplifter I would probably carry that one but for now my second hand 15 capped end spearpoint is my pocket staple. Not the most cherished knife in the drawer, but the most apt to be in the pocket these days. Taking on a nice even patina with plenty of bumps and bruises.

I've only started collecting traditionals in 2014. Was gifted a Charlow, managed to snag a couple of others, got my first custom Coats (albeit secondhand), got in on the Forum Knife, won an Esnyx modified #15 in a GAW. But for me, the knife of 2014 has to be my Northwoods Ebony Railsplitter that I got for a great price from the auction site. There's just something about this knife that makes me smile each time I pick it up.

The knife of the year for me is definitely the #77 stag barlow. I've been getting into traditionals extensively this year and own about 8 slipjoints. I've been collecting mostly barlows, but I'm looking to try other patterns if I see something I like. What I look for in a traditional is ergonomics and cutting performance. The blade needs to be thin and the handle must be relatively comfortable. I scored a walnut TC barlow earlier this year and while its fit&finish as well as action of the blades are by far the best of my traditionals, its simply too small to be comfortable held in my hand. The #77 is a better size and the stag has a slight swell on the left scale making for a comfortable grip as I am left handed. The clip blade is an excellent slicer and the wharncliff does a great job at opening boxes and packages. After refinishing the bolsters and scales it became my favorite traditional. I carry it the most out of all my knives I own and the clip blade is developing a nice patina from cutting fruit. I intend to carry it often for the 2015 year and to bring it with me back to college after my break is over.

I have a hand full that get carried nearly every day.

But the one that gets put in the pocket the absolute most is my steel toenail.

Out of my traditionals I carried my favorite this year has been this Robeson Queen Barlow.

I picked up this Boker Congress at a resale shop on vacation, and have carried it a lot these past six months. I liked it so much I bought a newer version with the beer barrel scale material! Nice fit and finish, light, and a useful blade combo. This particular one was even more interesting to me since it was the forum knife for a club in 1990!! You can't make out the stamp on the blade but it says North Carolina cutlery club.

The Knife?? Can't actually say but these are The Knives that made it to my door last year :D give or take a couple that are elsewhere, plus, er two in transit@the moment Wall St Northfield and CASE Senator.. A great year that I doubt will be surpassed.

Thanks everybody, Will
