The Les George Knives Thread

The guys at the D7 booth told my buddy they are about to release a run of the servo with a reverse tanto blade similar to the myna. Personally I love the drop point swedge blade....

Interesting. I like the blade too, but I also like having some variety in my smallish collection, and I'm a fan of reverse tanto/sheepsfoot/wharncliffe style blades. At some point my small carry rotation can begin to feel like I have the same blade in a bunch of different handles and I like more variety than that so I welcome the different options.

I’m with ya, I have more drop points than I need. While I love his drop points I would much prefer to have blade options in the vecp. It’s probably my biggest complaint. I’m actually at a point that I’m good on LGs for the foreseeable future. There’s really only one more drop point vecp variation I would like to have.

However, the Myna is so excellent it gives me hope.

Here are some quick and dirty (crappy) pics and first impressions. I tried to keep the camera overhead, but there's still some perspective going on here that might slightly skew the size comparisons. The Hyrax is a bit smaller than both, it just doesn't really look that way in some of these.

Initial impressions:

Great size and ergos. It's a little more compact than either and different enough from the Servo that I'm glad I have both. The grip is VERY similar to the Myna, just a bit shorter / smaller, and it's a grip style that I really love.

Action: This is a brand new knife, so I would assume things will change a bit as I work it in. Flipping deployment is very solid and pretty comparable with the others. Does not drop like a guillotine like the Servo on closing. I don't consider that better or worse, just different. They're all very smooth, with the Servo being more like ice and the Myna / Hyrax being more hydraulic and glassy.

One difference - I feel like you have to close further on the Hyrax to overcome the detent than the others. Starting out, I found myself doing the flipper double-clutch with it quite a bit, which doesn't happen at all with the other two. I adjusted pretty quickly, but it does feel differently to me in that regard, and I would give an edge to the Myna and Servo for closing.

All 3 are perfectly centered (I have 2 Mynas and both are), and there is zero blade play in any direction. All 3 knives feel superbly constructed and solid.

My personal favorite is still the Myna, but all 3 of these are going on heavy rotation.

Awesome comp pics, thanks. I like the size difference. What’s the blade length? Looks less than 3.5”.

Thanks! That size difference is giving me urges! And I agree, the myna just may be the best!

That's kind of where I'm at. I love the size - it's the perfect amount of compact for me when I want something a little smaller. I'm going to be carrying this one a bunch. I also like how he went a bit higher with the blade grind than he did on the Servo. It's really a great feeling, very handsome folder all-around.

All this talk I just had to pull it out. Running on skiffs, definitely worth the upgrade!

Thanks for the photos and detailed thoughts! The Hyrax is definitely compelling with the smaller size. My first Myna is scheduled for delivery today but the tracking has just been doing the "moving through our network" thing for the past couple days so I'm not holding my breath.

Part 2 of initial impressions.

This morning was the cut test. I have a bunch of heavy-duty double-layered fruit shipping boxes out in the garage that I always run my new blades through to get a baseline.

Tried the Hyrax, Servo, Myna, and also brought my "control" knife for comparison against something I've used a lot for this and know really well (a North Arm Skaha II - 0.1" blade-stock FFG laser).

All 3 of the LG / D7 knives performed really well, and very similarly. All have 0.150" stock thickness and seem to have a similar BTE just from the feels, and all have a superb edge from the factory. I was actually a good bit surprised just how well they did compared to a much more slicey-oriented design, and much better than a bunch of folders I've tried lately.

Between the 3, I don't think there was an objective winner, but the Myna is the subjective winner for me. For hard gripping and going down against the grain, it just gave me the most comfortable grip against the pressure, and I also feel like the longer, lower tip design made the cut smoother across the travel of the cut. Overall - very impressed with all 3.
