The LRK+ Mod Discussion and Pic Thread

I may have gone a little crazy last weekend making micarta for scales and liners :D

Awesome! I have seen vids and how-to's on this but never took time to try it out.

How cool would this be, micarta made with all of your old harley t-shirts, you know - the ones with holes that your wife cringes when you wear one -

I look forward to seeing your knives that have your own micarta on them - maybe even a JK with your own micarta!

Well done ky!!! You should be proud of that one, I think it came out great!! As much as it kills me to admit (plus the fact that I started this thread, plus the fact the lrk+ is a do it yourself platform, plus the fact that I probably look like a punk to all you guys around here), I sent mine out for scales and sheath. I was just getting too frustrated and it would put me in a rotten mood. I'm not sure why, but I feel the need to apologize to all of you, I feel like a real douche. Anyway, I'll post pics of it when I get it back. Bill Akers is putting the scales I sent him on and giving me a sheath. I sent it off to him with the ht scale removed so we'll see what it looks like when it comes back...

Well here it is guys! he can post more pics when he receives it

That is some spectacular figuring on that burl! Very nice work, both on the handle and sheath AND the polish on the blade -

Sweeeeet! Thanks for the pictures -

Sweet! That's gonna be nice PMB.

Don't beat yourself up over it, sometimes we just don't have the time to work on projects. I say thumbs up to realizing that, and not letting that knife sit around.

Well played sir!

Thanks for posting Bill! I'd say I could have done just as good a job....nahh, just kidding. Looks amazing and it only took Bill 1 day to clean it up, fix my mistakes and produce that beautiful finished product! I know I kind of cheated, but cheating never looked so good!!

ETA: can't wait to get it in hand, thanks again for the quick turnaround!!

Disclaimer: I'm by no means an expert, and there probably is a better way. I know there are other methods, but this is how I know/remember how to put a handle on. I hope this might help some, and thought some photos couldn't hurt.

I've had this blank laying around for a while, I was waiting on getting a drill press so that the holes would line up right and hopefully I wouldn't screw it up.

Clamp blank to handle material and drill holes, putting pins in as you go so everything stays lined up. John's tip on putting the pin material in a drill and sanding/tapering them worked well.

Draw the handle outline on your material.

Cut out each slab. (bandsaw, jig saw, coping saw etc)

IMG_3013.jpg

Done, ready for glue up- the protruding pins are reference points for your grip. lol

Mark how you want the front of your handle to be, take the blank out from the handles pined together, and shape how you want. Kyenglish had several photos of this shaping process.

This is as far as I've gotten. Power tools make it go quicker, but it could all be done by hand. Hope this post helps some of y'all.

great post kyturkey. i like to see how others do it. is that the LRK+ knife? i like the handle shape.

nice post KYT, much more professional the myself, I don't have anything to cut near as well but do have a "mini" drill press which came in very handy.

Can't wait to see the next step.

What wood is that?

I used 3M brand fiberglass resin found at Home Depot. Looks like this:

I used about half the recommended amount of hardener.
I've seen some of the vids on youtube & hope to make some Mycarta myself someday.Good work PG & thanks for the resign tip.

Oh yeah, mosaic pins also, saw a vid on making them too.Love the look.

ok, here we go....

i always forget to take a "before" pic, but here is one that is sort of a before pic. i decided to polish the forge finish off on the handle. then, i noticed that the forge finish was starting to rust on the blade (can kinda see it in pic). sooo...i got a satin finish knife at a forge finish price! keep in mind, i didn't bother to take this up to a high polish grit. i will do finish work at the end.

post polish.

spine shot. this is what started the idea for me anyway. i wanted some thin black liners, but it wouldn't look right against a forge finish. sooo...where's my sandpaper?!?

have i mentioned i have no good workspace area? hey, i know....my grill cover is flat(ish). that will be my polishing bench. ahem.

i hate to ruin the suprise, but here are the materials. stabilized Koa and thin black liners.

and, now we wait.

the two for the LRK+ are on the ends. the one in the middle is somethin' else. btw...you think there's a chance i use wayyy too much epoxy?? :D

Next Episode: rough cut the handle, drill, pin, shape foreend of handle, and glue.

and, now i get to eat lunch. and yes...that is a ham, cheese and dorito sandwich. what about it?
