The LRK+ Mod Discussion and Pic Thread

so, i was all prepping to get more done today on my LRK+. work decided to give me today off too, and i wasn't arguing. but, as i was about to start, ran across a craigslist add for a nice craftsman drill press about a half hour from me. for $80, i had to make a trip. it actually came mounted on a nice foldup style craftsman workbench too. sweet!

so, for those keeping score at home, this project has cost me a band saw and a drill press! but, i got good deals on each so am actually pretty happy about it.

got a softball game soon, so the knife is going to wait yet again. uhhh....you think those scales are dry yet?? :D

made a bit of progress today....or did i?...you'll see what i mean.

i have another WIP. a Bill Akers blade. did that one first as practice. went well. so, on to the LRK+.

Drilled out handle. sorry...no pics.

Pinned for alignment...

And saw away. I don't bother tracing and cutting. i just pin and cut.

Uhh...that's not going to work. Dammit. I was going faster on the LRK+. i thought i had it all figured out. don't get cocky kids. and, of course, i don't have any more liner material. really, it's ok though. it's a recoverable error. just gonna cost me some time. i'll order another set of thin liners and glue one up to the other side. no biggie. aaand, i'm guessing i won't do that again. lesson learned.

here is the rough result. KOA wood. Thin black liners. Black micarta pins.

the Backwoods blade ended up good. but, i will wait until i'm done with the LRK+ to glue them both up together.

thanks for the encouragement andy. i thought about just doing it as is. that would mean only one black liner and the other side of the spine would be just lying on wood. i shook off that idea. i would rather take the extra time to do it right.

Easy mistake ad well corrected, look at that we learned something! :p

it's looking god todd

Woo hoo! I received my LRK+ handled with Amendoin wood today -

It is very nice! It is a nice, heavy duty mid to small sized knife and John contoured my version very nicely. The knife is just the right size to fill up my hand, but with nothing left over.

I opted for the version with heat-treat scaled left on - to match our new kitchen (the wood is what we used on our floor...)

I also was very pleasantly surprised when I found the KYenglish custom lanyard with the sliding knot in olive and blue - it is a great looking lanyard - thanks Peter!! That lanyard will stay with my LRK+ and I'll try to get it installed and some pictures asap.

Enough talk - PICTURES!!

great looking knife, the wood looks nice and those contours look very comfy,

hope you like the lanyard, thanks for being so kind,

So far, I`ve only seen two done with handles. Everybody else leaving their`s bare steel? I`ve only got three more of these to make.

I just finished the workbench this weekend. Now I can make me some handles! Uh, when I can find time....

nice mqqn! great looking little knife. i like that wood. and great job on that lanyard KYe....looks great.

In my opinion the LRK+ is probably one of the best deals on a usuable sized knife out there (I know I might be a bit biased here), but where else can you find something like it for the price? Even if I put one of my standard handle materials on one it would still be around $100 shipped!

The Mahogany is going to be killer dude.

And now it is done. The heat treat finish was rubbing off in spots, so I decided to lightly sand it off. Sorry for all the photos, but I'm pretty proud of how it came out :D

It's been a real treat seeing all the fine work done on these knives.

I have been dragging my feet on this project a bit, but managed to get a little work done on it.

I had some red linen micarta that's been layin around for years. I decided to use that. I glued a gray fiber spacer on the micarta...then did an initial shaping on front area. Here's one side glued up, then I drilled some small holes and glued up the other side.

LRK1.jpg

Here's with both sides glued up and the NS Corby rivets installed. The scales look funky the way I have them postitioned to the blade. I was just being lazy about sanding down the front area.

LRK2.jpg

And, last for now, rough cut done.

LRK3.jpg

Hopefully, I will get some more done soon.

Glenn

that's gonna look good. i really like the look of the maroon micarta. thanks for the pics.

Hi Glenn -

I think Maroon with grey liners is going to be a nice looking combo!

Thanks for the work in progress pictures.
