The Mountian Bike Thread..

I don't know what the best tires are for your area J, but I have the WTB Moto Raptor Race DNA on my 29. They have been amazing for me. I keep the pressure at 43 rear 40 front in the trails and I have yet to have a problem. Even with the rocks and roots covered with pine needles and leaves I was comfortable.

I don't know how the reviews will be or if the 26" version will perform the same but here is a link

Also, have no idea if its a legit place to order from.

I wish I could find a replacement pair in 29" for next year.

I haven't had a flat since I switched over to tubeless.

I ride 2.25 Kenda Nevegals with Stan's inside.

When I rode yesterday my back tire was filled to 26psi and my front 24psi- nice, cushy ride with great traction.

Whatever works for you J, I was just throwing it out there :)

The lowest I have run is 35. 40 just works on these tires on my 29 so I have been sticking with it.

Yesterday was a great day. My girl has been getting more and more comfortable in the woods. She has finally gone from terrified to enjoying it.

We were riding the roads just exploring around and she turned off into the woods. I was happy! But my tires were at 65. I let out too much, then my pump broke. So I road back to my house on 20psi to get to my floor pump and we headed back out. It was a blast.

Beanbag, the Nevegals were on the Moots that I have been ooogling at my LBS. They look extremely similar to my Moto Raptors :)

The sidewalls on my Moto raptors are paper thin though. Knock on wood flats have not been a problem. Off to get a flat tire now ;-)

The moto raptors do not have strong enough sidewalls to run them too low. They feel too lose below 35ish.

I have Negenvals on my bike now. I have a small hole in back sidewall but where I ride that could happen to any non dh casing tire. They are good tires. I want to try some on stick-e

Went by myself for about two hours today. I was able to ride some trails I can't with my girl.

I was also able to cover a lot of ground in that two hours.

This is a great down hill that is half pipe shaped and you can ride side to side but its full of huge rocks. Can you see any of them through the PILES of leaves?

Here is a spot the trail comes to a river crossing. Lots of fun getting across here.

You can have a lot of fun all over this hill if you want

This area is always mudded up from horses for about a mile.

Trying to show a little scale on this one that I take on as an incline normally.

Of course there are miles of fields you can ride if you want easy cross country

I hope you guys enjoyed seeing a few shots of some of the local trails I love to ride.

Nice looking trails Rich, and no I can't see all those hidden rocks. That's the part about leaf riding that scares me, not the slipping and sliding.

I hear you :). Even after years of riding the same trails leaves can give you some surprises.

26.7 mph is down right boring on the road, verging on boring on gravel trails, but on a technical rocky rooted single track that takes a lot of balls J. If anyone says it doesn't then they haven't actually done it.

99.5% of the trails behind me you could never hit those speeds. You would be looking more at hitting 20mph tops and feeling like you were doing something.

There are two spots that I like to fly on. They are both downhills about a mile long. When I used to have a speedo I also tried to get faster and faster. I never made it much over 30mph and when I did that I felt like I was FLYING. I can tell you without a speedo that I haven't topped 20mph on the trails this year though. I have been going more for crazy inclines that seem impossible. I never used to enjoy inclines so much, but with the new pedals and really getting in shape, its more fun then ever.

Stay safe J, and keep tearing it up man.

Its not the feel of 50+ on the road that scares me these days, its the thought of my BIKE tires blowing out and nothing but quick releases holding on the wheels that has slowed me down over the years.

This may sound crazy but I don't think I would go much faster then 30 on an actual road bike. When I had Bontrager tires on my bike I had a run of flats. The worst I was going about 30 on the gravel trail I ride, it sounded like a shotgun going off as my front tire went from fully inflated to FLAT in the blink of an eye. I can't imagine tiny road bike slicks being of any use flat. I don't know how I didn't crash with my mountain bike.

shit!
I have a HELL of a time reaching 20mph on the paved
lakefront path!
I mean Im peddling my ass off,Heart Rate at 160bmp
I try to keep my cadence up at 90-100 rpm's
was told that is important. Pushing hard in a higher gear is
just bad on the knees.

I hope its because of my tank of a bike!

Its the bike Fug. I had my speedo on three bikes. With each new bike I was able to go faster. The jump from my old GT to the GF was a huge speed increase. I remember on my GT the highest I ever got on the road down this super fast hill was 40 while pedaling. Then I got my GF and hit that coasting. On the gravel trails 18-20 on my GT felt like 28-30 on my GF. Food for thought.

Seeing as we are currently on the topic of road biking, I figured I'd post up some pics of a bike trip I did with my wife this summer.

We got in four days of riding in the Manchester, VT area. Mountain passes, quiet roads, great views.

It's not a VT road ride w/out a gratuitous covered bridge picture:

This is the top of one of the hardest climbs in the area. It was about 2.5 miles and about 900' elevation gain.

More riding through farm land.

Welcome to what appears to be the cross-roads of the world, Middletown Springs, VT........

We found the street signs to be very intuitive:

Yours truly:

ManchesterVT036.jpg

We found this 5 mile dirt road that was in beautiful condition.

ManchesterVT052.jpg

Along the way we stumbled upon a maple sap collection set.

ManchesterVT060.jpg

The gap between the mountains in the distance led to a two mile climb followed by a five mile descent!!!

ManchesterVT037.jpg

All in all, this was some of the best road riding I've ever done.
