The new Case Bose teardrop

I didn't intend to try and slight the Case model. I was trying to favorably compare it to a custom. I'm looking forward to seeing this new model. Sorry if it came off the wrong way.

Joe

Joe, no problem at all friend. I too thought you compared the two favorably. It was the comment I quoted that struck a nerve but that too is now in the past. Have a Happy Easter.

Seems to me, and maybe it's just me, that sometimes the Case knives I buy are a little hit or miss on build quality. Not all, just here and there which I guess is to be expected to some degree. I'm hoping this is a good one for Case.

Joe

My apologies Joe, I was a bit quick to comment and didn't mean to slight your post. Cost aside the main detail on the Case knife which doesn't sit well with me is the indistinct blade shape. Something that is heightened by their tumbling process. To me this frame shape begs for a nice, crisp blade. Your pic emphasised that in my eyes.

From my perspective, Case would have had a winner with the Tear Drop had the main blade been an as ground or a satin finished wharncliffe with a cut swedge; as stated by one poster, the blade is an odd duck, shape wise...a wharnie that was either sharpened one time too many, or a spear point ground by hand and by a blind person. I love Case knife collecting, but sometimes Case just doesn't get it, at least from the perspective of some knife aficionados.

Agreed. The blade shape screams Tony Bose. Kind of a wharncliffe/zulu spear. I too would have preferred a spear and, as mentioned above, a blunter tail.

I don't know if the blade screams Tony Bose, but I will say it needs some serious TB intervention; Bose like it's not...the blade that is.

The blade is a Zulu spear that screams Schrade 1930s. It's as long as you can get it in that frame and get the point housed without it rapping the spring. Case does get it, they made that thing just like the protos I sent them.

Sometimes a picture is worth more than a thousand words...here's a fine complimentary foto by a Case Forum member of a red pocket worn Tear Drop. The picture was enough for me to have just placed an order for one...

The red bone pocket worn tear drop is a winner in my book. Can't wait to get my hands on one.

I'm certainly excited about a new pattern emerging from the past. Should make a fine gents knife. Teardrops come in many forms.....this one is almost like a quill knife I think.

Almost always prefer Barehead patterns and this is no exception, hope I can get my hands on an Amber Bone here in Europe within the next few weeks. Does anybody know if the Barehead is being offered in other handle choices too? I saw a line pic of the Ebony one and it seemed to have a different shield but that might just be a proto version?

Thanks, Will

From a dealer site regarding the ebony handles version "THIS KNIFE WAS MADE EXCLUSIVELY FOR DEALERS WHO ATTENDED THE 2014 SHOT SHOW IN LAS VEGAS, NEVADA.THESE KNIVES HAD TO BE PRE-ORDERED IN JANUARY AT THIS TRADE SHOW"

Does this knife have Half-stops?

Nice looking knife, hope Case offers it in CV steel.

I mean no offense to anyone, and I LOVE the TD, but does anybody else see that Case appears to be copying our forum knives that GEC makes. I mean, last year they made a wharncliffe trapper (like our 2012) and now they have a teardrop jack (like our 2011). I suspect that a Congress Jack is in the works for next year or so.

Don't get me wrong, I love the new Case knives coming out and Mr. Bose's involvement, and I REALLY love that Case is getting new patterns (to them), I have just noticed this. I think they may see what we like, then see how others do it, then decide to out do the original makers.

I believe it's the other way around, Case has been making knives since 1889, and if anything, all the Johnny come lately's are simply copying patterns that have been in existence well before even when Case started.

Being a fan of bareheads, I just ordered myself an amber bone single blade. Should be here in a few days, pics to follow.

I'm pretty sure those patterns you mentioned were all Tony's, going back years. So I'd say it's pretty much a 180 from what you've posted.

Doc Hagens teardrop is from a pattern I gave him. We patterned it from a quill knife from the 1800s. I've made it in 4 different sizes. I started making the wharncliffe trapper in the middle 1980s, no one else had ever used that combination in a trapper and it's been copied a lot with my blessings. Charlie called me and ask if I cared if they did a WT forum knife and I said of course not. I draw the past, patterns which are gone. I'm not going to keep an eye on the forum knives so I can come up with something new.

Thanks, Will and Mike. That is the one I ordered. I do like the bowtie (?) shield more than the standard Case oval one. Maybe just because it is a little different. Looks good on this newest version by Tony.
