The New Northeast Hammer-in - Essex, Vermont, July 2007

Dan,
I know there will be at least a few wives in attendance. Also, Mace will be there. He's kind of girly.

He's not girly... he's just sensitive.

Derrick, are you trying to kill Mace? Everyone else is doing an hour or so of demo... you have that poor SOB doing a 9 hour shift both days!!!!! SHEEESH!:D

...am I still the only guy responsible for cleaning the portajohns. btw?:barf: ;)

Mace is in charge of the green coal forging station but there will be a few relievers so he can pee, eat, do his nails, and maybe catch a few demos too.

Folks - I've received a number of inquiries about the availability of camping on premises and decided to go out and snap a few photos of the property today.

There should be plenty of room for any and all attendees to pitch a tent. Feel free to view all the photos here

Mace, you got to do me a big favor. Bring a chain and a couple paddle locks to put around a tree and BBBB Beaver's ankle so he doesn't try swimming around the pond when everyone crashes. HEHEHEHEHE!!!
Thanks I.G.

Hey man :grumpy: I know how to swim, (in more ways than one :D )

I just want to give everyone a quick update -

We received a very good response at the Blade Show (very nice to meet some of you), and I'm receiving emails, phone calls, and completed registration forms daily.

Those of you that have expressed interest to me but have not yet sent the registration form and payment, please try to get that done in the next week or so. We're now in the process of finalizing details with the caterer so I'd like to firm up the headcount sooner rather than later.

Those of you that plan on going but have not contacted me yet, please know that there is still room left but space will be limited. The hammer-in is just over a month away so make your plans now.

Thanks again for everyone's interest. This promises to be a great event. Can't freakin wait!

Oh, P.S. - I just scored a nice little Soderfors anvil for our green-coal forgers as well as a 50# mechanical power-hammer that I hope to have installed and tuned up in time for the hammer-in. Also startting a new forge-build tonight. We should be in very good shape in the tool department!

Gah where do you all find these power hammers?! iv'e been looking and cant for hte life of me find any for sale closer than ohio or so ! I should pester Spangler about his, he's had it for a year now and hasnt repaired it and got it running, he's not far from me !

I mailed out my check this saturday (which means it probably didnt leave RI till monday afternoon) after emailng you when I realized that I hadnt done so yet. Even if you're 'good' in the tool department, is there anything you'd like people to bring to help out? I can toss my whisper baby forge and a 20lb tank in the back of my truck if needed for more forging capacity, and I could if needed throw a 120lb peter wright in the truck too.

Justin, I received your check. Do you still have that swage block I was asking you about?

I do, but I think for the time being I'm going to hold onto it because of some of the shapes that it has (particularly the radiused square holes which are great for forming square candle holders in) Maybe at the next big blacksmithing meet I go to I can find someone with a mechanical power hammer that'll take partial trade with other tools =P As nice as the huge perfect condition slotted cone mandrel I have is, and the 2nd swage, and the smaller of my 2 peter wright anvils, some things would be of much more use to me for the time being than lesser used tools =P

Maybe I'll toss some of them in my truck when I drive up anyways and see what sort of tailgating is going on. I'll bring the swage up, and if it tickles my fancy to let it go, you're first in line.

Hi guys, just printed my registration form. Had to go to pg.3 to find the thread so I thought I'de put it on pg.1 again.

Can't wait!!!! Makin plans!!! See ya there!!! :D

-[thanks for all your work, Derrick!! ]-

Hi guys, Please count me In. sorry so late. Been having some computer issues.
Hopefully there's still some room. Let me know if there isn't. Otherwise....See ya there!

Yeah Ed, still some space left. I'll put your name on the list.

Just to update everyone, we now have close to 40 people who have either mailed in their registration form and check or indicated a firm commitment to do so. I will limit the total number to 60 participants in order to maintain a somewhat more intimate setting where attendees can see what's going on, ask questions, and intereact directly with the demonstrators. At the rate at which forms, emails, and phone calls are coming in, we will hit our limit within the next two weeks or so. If you are interested in attending but have not yet contacted me, you should think about doing so sooner rather than later.

Sounds like it's going to be a great time, with a good number of people. As far as camping goes, how has the weather been up there? if a bunch of people camped together, would we be able to have a fire pit or not? Wondering if I should forge out a camping set while I'm working on stuff this weekend =P

(having your own hand made stuff when you camp is so much more fun and satisfying!)

Weather has been pretty nice lately. Cool evenings - down into the 60s at night, but July does tend to be a bit warmer up here. It varies quite bit so bring a sweatshirt and jeans just in case.

There is a firepit back there that will be in use once the sun goes down. If you like to go to sleep early, set your camp away from the firepit because there might be a few late-night revelers.

Here's the pit and a little poker I made last year.

I heard The Jerzee Devil will be there to amuse and delight? Is there any truth to this rumor?

Great news, everyone - I just heard from MS Christoph Deringer who will be coming to the hammer-in and will make himself available for consultation and instruction at the green coal forging station.

Those of you who know Christoph and his work recognize his amazing skills with a hammer. Now you'll get a chance to see him work.
