The New Snark

I didn't think you were being sarcastic, I am just getting kind of jaded in my old age, not to mention lazy. I just end up typing a bunch of in depth things that, in the end, someone (not you) will want to argue about, or debate, and it just goes on and on... I just don't care to play anymore.

But in fairness, since I brought it up, I'll say this.

There are lots of "National" grids, hence lots of Norths... Hell, Florida has 3. Magnetic North changes everywhere, all the time (declination). The magnetic field is dynamic so magnetic North is always changing. True North.. well.. whats true?.. NAD 1927's Clark ellipsoid of 1866? , NAD 1983's WGS 84? Astronomic North (Polaris) or South (the Southern Cross)? And that is just the U.S.A. Other countries have their own systems. It gets more even involved, but this isn't the place for it. And GPS threw a whole 'nother wrench in it. (It's based on WGS 84). Then there's GLONASS (Russia's GPS equivalent) Galileo (Europe's GPS equivalent, and a couple other's I can't recall the name of.

Lots of Norths

Doc

Very cool. I didn't know about all that stuff. Makes sense though.

Geographic North, Geomagnetic North, Magnetic North, Geophysical North, True North, Celestial North... I think it depends on ho many surveyors and mappers you talk to.. :)

The latest and greatest is NADCON27 , we just started loading that on all data collectors going out the door, along with GEOID files..

the other systems, China has Compass (BeiDou), India is supposed to put up IRNSS and Japan is working on QZSS.. I think France is supposed to be doing one too, but I haven't read much on it. I know current survey grade GPS gets US and Russian SV's and is set up to receive Galileo when it is completed, I think they have 4 or 5 SV's up now...
Were / Are you a surveyor Doc?

Nah... We pretty much know about all of them. We don't use all of them... But we know what they are.
And we probably can't name them all, pretty much like we can't name all of the countries.

Well I can't anyway.

Wow, I bet you got a couple stories to tell, lol... I have been working on Optical and LASER equipment for almost 14 years now, been doing GPS also for the last 8.. I love hearing old time surveyors tell stories about the old days and ways.. it has changed a lot just since I have been in the field... I used to sell chains and pins when I first started, I don't think the kids they hire to take points these days knows what a chain is.

You must be talking about SurveyorConnect.. I used to try to help people with Trimble problems in my free time, but there are quite a few knuckleheads on there... lol.

The educational aspect of snark just went up a notch.

Thank you all for the interesting read.

Todd, you know the rules! you can't tell somebody you have a knife for them to buy and NOT post some drool worthy pictures of it!

SuperWW to the hammock! up up and awaaaaaaay

Cbear. You need to get your ass of the couch and get a job already. WW gonna be pissed you top his post count! Lol. :D

Besides......... I got a desk knife sitting here to sell you.
I'm meeting with a guy on Friday. I picked up a couple hours of work this week and that is paying my car note and insurance this month so that is good at least.

Besides it's not MY fault if Supes can't keep up with the snark! If he drops back too far that is TOTALLY his fault!

Well... DANG! I had NO idea but thanks for teaching me!

Turns out multiplayer 2048 can drain my phone of battery even if I have it plugged in. Sheesh.

Wait... WUT o_O MULTIPLAYER?! Is this iPhone only?

Howdy to my fellow Beckerheads!!

I figured I'd better check in to the Snark so that everyone knows I'm still alive. I got back from my almost seven week trip to WSMR with a raging sinus infection thanks to all the dust blowing around there. Had a couple week break and wound up going back for a week to work on a different test program. Then one of my step-daughters, her husband, and the two grand-daughters (ages 8 and almost 4) arrived for a visit the day after my return. Been super busy this past week, and looking forward to getting back to something of a routine next week. Family visits are fun, but can be tiring!

In Becker news, I gifted the son-in-law (or maybe step SIL....whatever) a BK5 and BK11 for Father's Day.

In non-Becker news, we headed out to door on the way to church on Father's Day and were dive bombed by barn swallows. Turned out they were not worried about us, but the snake (Texas Rat Snake, I think) with it's head in one of the barn swallow nests on the front porch. The photos were taken while standing on the welcome mat just outside the door, so the grandkids got to see nature up close and personal. We let the snake finish breakfast since it looked like it had a good half dozen in it's belly already. Not to mention it will cut down on the amount of bird excrement I have to clean off the porch.

Pretty impressive ability to cling to the wall...

Did you sell British Chains, Engineer's Chains or Texas/Spanish Chains?

Lots of different "Norths"

Doc

If you ask my wife it changes depending on what street your on :D

My wife is a lot smarter than me, but she gets thoroughly confused when I give her directions, even in our own dang garden. "Tell me right or left, not east or west!" Well um... R or L changes depending on where you started from. For our practical purposes, NESW stays the same regardless...

We're not circumnavigating the globe or launching a freakin' Space Shuttle here, I just want her to plant the corn where it will get the most sun :D

Man i understand that completely!! My wife is plenty smart...... But man when it comes to direction, WOW. I love the woman to death but i think if she didnt have a GPS she wouldnt make it to work on time LMAO

When it comes to the garden ill handle that ;)

POIDH :D

SuperWW to the hammock! up up and awaaaaaaay

Correct!! I got in the hammock again and positioned myself to watch a movie on my computer.... Next thing i know i start smelling something yummy.... Momma done made it home from work and already started cooking....

Hammock = time traveler ??? I guess it does for SuperWW LMAO I was only in it for what felt like 10-15 minutes when really over 2 hours passed.

Did you sell British Chains, Engineer's Chains or Texas/Spanish Chains?

We sold the old CST brand chains which I am pretty sure were engineer's chains.. I have seen a couple of old Texas/ vara chains. I used to get a lot of old time equipment for repair, compasses and Dumpy levels, but a lot of that stuff is sitting on old RPLS's shelves now days. I rarely get conventional total stations anymore, almost all servo drive or robotic.
I love seeing the old stuff though.. I have seen some old survey records that mention units of measure like cigarette throws or tobacco spits.

On Netflix check out Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown season 2 episode 7 Tokyo... It's one of the trippiest erotic confusing 48 minutes of tv...

That is about the best thing I have read in here in forever.. :D

And you put it in your signature! bonus points for me!

Yes, hammocks are like mini time-traveling devices. You can lose entire afternoons in them with the aid of a few adult beverages!
