Damn.

Those are some colorful Hornets. Nicely dyed scales.

It sure is cool to see the beautiful work that comes out of your shop.

What's really interesting is that Todd is one of the best sheath makers in the country. You would never get him to admit it, but he is. It's icing on the cake.

Well, this indeed if one hell of a compliment, Thank you! However, Im affraid its one I can never live up to. There are many fine craftsmen out there, many with more skills than me. This is only I think the third year i have been making my own sheaths, and much like other things in life, it came from nessessity.

I had a couple of local gentlemen making sheaths for me for years. One of them, I absolutely loved his work, while it wasnt MY work, he seemed to understand my style and he nailed what i was wanting 95% of the time and had more than fair prices. Unfortunately, he developed his second case of colon cancer and they revoved so much of his internal organs that it rendered him unable to do any kind of work. Sad really, I havnt been able to catch up with him but the rumors floating around the local gun shows is that he passed.

The other guy I had was local, only about 4 miles from my house. He handmakes saddles. Really great guy, I used to love just going out there to shoot the sh!t with him. He'd always take my daughter out to his pasture and let her feed his horses apples. His craftsmanship was second to none, unfortunately he never got my specific orders right, wrong color, tooling wasnt what I wanted etc, and his prices was throught the roof. Anywhere from $30. to $90. bucks everytime I hade a sheath made. Unacceptable. So, You want something done your way, you do it yourself. Right.

I took a couple of hundred bucks and bought some entry level tools and just tried my hand at it not knowing anything. One old man the I became friends with that forges his own steel in Friendship Indiana gave me some great pointers, but besides that, Im self taught in leatherworking by reading stuff here on Blade forums, and believe me friends. If I can do it. anyone can do it.

The funny thing that I am learning about leatherwork is that the unlike knifemaking, the better you get at it the longer it takes you to make a sheath. I dont know, I cant figure it out either.

Its Funny Trade. I said almost the same thing to Todd the other day. I said his sheath was so pretty I have a hard time bringing it out. Its really beautiful actually and fits the knife perfectly.
I draw the knife with my pinky and the rest of the handle drops right into my palm. Its very well done.

^Aww shucks Thorny, I bet you say that to all the guys! :p

its because you learn to have more patience, knowing quality craftsmanship can't be rushed. you sell yourself sort, todd. not everyone can do leatherwork. I gave it a try and it looked awful. your work is right up there ( if not better) with those here on bf that are dedicated sheath makers

Well thanks Ryan, but my first efforts looked like manure! still got the first on I did, one of the small knives I made for my son is in it.

You can't be telling him stuff like that.
Todd, I'm pretty sure he meant "the country" like out in the country. You're the best sheath maker between Rockford and Jonesville, I've heard. :D

Java Mac is going to be tapped at SunKing very soon.... Coffee infused Wee Mac. I hope I can catch it in time and get a few growlers filled.

This morning the Magua found its way onto my belt instead of my usual carry, the Hornet. I needed a blade an hour or so later and the Magua felt gigantic in hand. Lol. But of course did a fine job.
