The only reason I RMAed a knife was to get an unsharpened blade

OP… benchmade will sell you an unsharpened blade. Just buy the balisong trainer. To my knowledge it’s the only blade that comes that way.

Wow, you're just not able to follow along here, are you?

Most of the people here are just trying to win their argument and are too stubborn to change their stance when new information is presented.

I called BM a few months ago and asked about getting an unsharpened blade on my custom order.

"The only way you can get an unsharpened blade is during a warranty". (paraphrased)

I knew I should have put that in the notes... I figured since the question to sharpen or not was REQUIRED to process the form that it wasn't necessary to put it in the notes.
I am following along but you are not explaining yourself very well. What new information? You are just repeating the same thing "I checked the box why didn't they give me a knife w/o an edge?". We have responded with "They won't give you a blade w/o an edge" and we have also asked you to clarify your request if we aren't understanding it correctly which your response to our questions has been "Your not listening to me". The only new information has been in the above quoted where you state that you called and were told by a BM rep you could get what you want through an RMA. I believe the rep misunderstood you or spook w/o knowing what the RMA team will actually do we have had many here state that they won't do what you request, if we understand your request correctly.

I am not able to speak for all but from other comments and your posts this appears to be what people, myself included, believe you are requesting

You sent in a knife for an RMA blade swap but you wanted the replacement blade to have no edge bevel at all. So can I ask plainly is this what you did and what you wanted?

This sounds to me like a completely fair and valid request. I'd be annoyed too, especially because some of the edges Benchmade puts on their knives are burnt and badly uneven. Fixing an uneven edge can require taking lots of steel off the knife, and if someone is going to lop a bunch of steel off my knife I'd rather it be me with a good guided system than someome rushing with a grinder.

I've had the exact same thought that if I ever order another custom from them, I was going to request that it not be sharpened. I appreciate OP letting us know that the request might not be honored. Benchmade doesn't put enough effort into sharpening even their most expensive knives.

If I was a manufacturer, there’s no way in hell I’d send an unsharpened blade to a customer to jack up and send around on the secondary market. I’ve seen the sharpening jobs some self-proclaimed “sharpening experts” put on their knives and I’ll take Benchmade’s factory edge over 99.9% of them. I also would find it a little insulting if someone requested to buy a knife from me, but didn’t trust me to put the initial edge on it. So yeah, I’d say “pound sand” if someone tried to get an unsharpened blade from me.

I'm going to chalk your post up to hyperbole, because surely nobody can believe that Benchmade does better edges than 99.9% of members of a knife enthusiast forum, let alone someone picky enough to make a request like this.

It doesn't really matter what you would do if you were a manufacturer. If I asked a knife manufacturer's CS if I could buy an unsharpened blade, I'd be miffed if I then did not receive an unsharpened blade.

I don’t think you grasp what I’m trying to say. You assume too much as far as the skill of hobbyist sharpeners. They scratch the sides of blades all the time on stones.

In any case, more often than not knives get resold after sharpening by knife collectors and sharpeners. I’m quite certain it’s a safer bet for Benchmade to put their own bevels on before they leave the factory, rather than risk some monstrosity coming out of someone’s carelessness and overconfidence at the hands of a grinder.

Benchmade is making the right call here.

I can understand being miffed by that but it doesn't mean the CS rep was right about what you could actually request and even if a manufacturer has a bad rep for their edges that is no reason to expect them to actually offer blades w/o an edge.

Wow, this thread's a (bad) trip.

I think this is what has occurred.

OP asked Benchmade to sell him, or her, a new knife from the custom shop with a completely unsharpened blade. Benchmade's customer service representative seems to have responded incorrectly (likely not comprehending the odd question), stating that it can be requested on an RMA form to not have the blade sharpened as part of their repair service. Benchmade returned the knife to the OP, likely without ever touching the edge of the blade.

OP started this thread to complain about Benchmade.

Not to resurrect this, but I think I have a suggestion. Lasador has a SOG that seemingly came unsharpened. OP has a Benchmade that’s been sharpened. They should just swap. Problem solved.

The guy that wanted the unsharpened Benchmade wanted basically a blade blank, not a half-assed sharpening job. Figured I’d let you know.

I have learned that You are here to argue and insult people ,

Not my initial intention. Some people had a difficult time following a long.

Anyways... one of the mods made a very good point about warranty work that doesn't include the blade. That "do not sharpen" option may be just for that!

There is also some probability that the BM rep I spoke to told me incorrect information about how to get an unsharpened blade.

At the end of the Service Ack Form that I received, it states on the very last item description:

Cleaned, Oiled, Adjusted & Sharpened

BM should be able to skip the last part there.

Most of you here can't even acknowledge that I have a good reason to believe it is possible to get an unsharpened blade from BM. You're just spewing your deflated opinion.

The reason for my initial call to BM in November was to figure out how to get an unsharpened blade on the custom order I was considering. No can do!
