The Original 0777

Microtech has engaged in a guerilla marketing tactics as it seeks to steal the thunder from the impending release of the ZT's 0777 model. Four words to KAI. Go to the mattresses.

Nice explanation Jim and best of luck with the upcoming 0777, its a beauty! Any time frames yet for the pre-order fans?

A definite copy, and a piss-poor one at that. I saw the MT copy at the NYCKS. Did not even touch it-All I needed was a look to know it wasn't worth touching. Having designs knocked-off sucks. The only satisfaction is when the copy cannot even begin to capture the essence of the original. That is certainly the case here.

Sorry guys. I've been out of the loop. Bottom line the competition doesn't have this. :D
Jim, you guys did an amazing job! Congrats again brother! :D

Mr. Martin's post and this ^^ (Overall Knife of the Year). That about sums it up.

I had no idea how much hate there was in the knife industry. I too saw this knife at the show and I touched it and I flipped it and inspected all of it's details closely. I came to the conclusion that it was some of Tony's best work, and for sure pictures don't do the details of it justice.

I know that I'm stepping on my D**k by coming here amongst all the Marfione bashing where it seems to be the sport these days. But to say that the Marfione flipper is "Piss-Poor" is just plain wrong and hateful and sated simply out of hate. Does it closely resemble a 777?, Yes it does. So say how you feel about that but don't discredit the mans skills. I believe everyone knows how very capable Tony is of making a very fine knife.

You mean some of Tony's best copying don't you.

No, I really didn't know he could make a very fine knife, only recently found out that he could copy one though. Name his greatest designs because MT knives are over-priced BS. Just my $.02

IMO, the only correct comment you made is the one about coming here and stepping on your appendage.

No one is denying the fact that Marfione has exceptional skills, but must be held accountable for the way he choses to use them.

I think RJ Martin has a little more experience than your self and being an American, he is certainly entitled to his opinion.

Copying is something that knifemakers take very seriously ( including microtech).

Also your statement about MT bashing is incorrect....MT has been bashed for many years (mostly self induced).

Try and not think about Kershaw and MT and try and focus on morals ,ethics ,malice.

Now, we are still waiting for MT's side of the story so if there is some miraculous explanation MT has that will change my views...I will apologize for any comments i make that may prove incorrect.

I still luv yuh man, you are entitled to your opinions as well.

I think it speaks volumes when a maker chimes in. 'Nuff said.

It's a good thing for me though, I had an MT itch I was going to scratch but no more.

Seriously ??? The issue is the copying, it is wrong to copy, therefore He doesn't get any credit for anything, nothing , Zip. Until he does the right thing, I wouldn't give him credit for crawling out of bed in the morning. Get Real !!

RJ's comment has nothing to do with hate. IMO RJ's skills buries Tony's when it comes to making a custom knife. The reason you may feel it was some of TM's best work is because he copied the ZT0777. He didn't draw inspiration from it, he copied it. And he copied it because he has no honor or class when it comes to his business, and I use the term business very loosely when using it in the same sentence as Tony Marfione. His first venture into the field of flippers and he makes a carbon copy of the 2011 Overall Knife of the Year at Blade. That has Marfione written all over it. Pure class...

The best knives that ever came out of the MT factories have been collaborations with other makers. The LCC, the ATCF, and all the Brend collaborations are the best. Almost every other custom he does is either a HP or bead blasted high hollow grind or tanto. The production knives are a crap shoot. Sometimes you get something that will last and others break within a few weeks. Mystery steels, mismatched parts, mismatched serial numbers, mismatched dates, and the always hilarious spelling mistakes. He has screwed over other makers, dealers, staff, and has had to move the factory how many times now? MSAR is a joke. Don't even get me started on customer service. And then on top of all this that clown copies other makers designs (Strider SnG, Mikov, ZT0777). And if he's not copying designs he just recycles his old designs into bigger versions. What a visionary...

So what is it about MT and TM that makes the diehard fans stay around? Is it the stellar way he treats his customers and fans? That can't be it because he crapped all over them on Microholics years ago. Is it the ridiculously overpriced knives? Maybe, but I used to be a fan of Microtech and now I wouldn't buy one if someone was selling them for pennies on the dollar? Is it because he offers to make forum knives at such a great price? Well, anyone who is a Holic knows that ain't true. If that guy made an OTF with abalone inlays and a HP blade made from one of his petrified turds I guarantee that a handful of the diehards would praise him for his ingenuity and would pay $1500 for one.

Edit: I used to be one of those guys, by the way. I decided to take the blinders off when I heard about the SnG copy that the Strider guys did not okay.

Wow Tony8179, and you have had so many positive things to say about Microtechs over the years over at Microholics. And over here on this site you wouldn't touch one with a 10 foot pole. I just find that interesting, nothing personal.

Read my posts over in the Spoke With The Man Himself thread on Microholics and read the last line (edit) in my above post. I used to be a huge fan, but I can't justify any of the actions made by TM and his company lately. Like I said, the blinders are off. I almost forgot about the Green USN Troodons that the USN guys never okayed either. Anything for the Almighty dollar.

I'm going to end on this site by saying Thanks by not attacking me personally. Every one here on this site has a voice and I'm sure Tony reads all the posts. You all have valid issues that you want answered and I would like like to hear from the man himself too.

I'll be over at Microholics.

Thomas,
Just got in from a few days in the mountains with the family, didn't get much time online.

I'll just say that the cream always rises to the top, and having held the 0777 in my own hands, I doubt any copy will come close in fit, finish, or function. The 0777 is absolutely top notch. Even though I doubt a copy could compare doesn't make the production of them right in any way. Outright copies should leave a sour taste in every knife collector's mouth. Right is right and wrong is wrong, no matter who you are.

Tpetsch,

In all likelihood all Tony did was grind that blade from a blank somene esle cnc'd for him. In my time at MT i never saw tony make a knife or machine anything, only grind blades from blanks. He is not a knifemaker in the sense that most on this site consider the word to be. Taking an existing design, having someone else make cad drawings from it, having someone else mill parts and a blade from the cad, then final grinding the blade and assembling the parts into a knife by Tony. Does that make him a knifemaker or a person assembling someone elses knife, lol?!?

Maybe he could have got a job on Kershaw assembly line if he wanted an honorable way to do what he did!
