Come on in...and patiently wait.


In this thread we will discuss new hobbies we have picked up to make the wait go faster.

Or we can discuss things we have recently done that were not too exciting.

I went to Tulsa, OK. It was...horrible. I don't like that place, it's full of road construction, yet the roads never seem to improve. I was there two years ago and it seemed like they were still working on the same roads in the same places since last time I visited. Ugh.

What have you guys been patiently up to?
 
Just work and my bday on the 18th of this week. Lol. Sometimes the days and months just seem to fly by, and I'm hoping now is no exception.
 
I have been busy researching the properties of S90V. Best HRC and edge angles for folding knives, heat treat etc.
Hoping to hear soon on the plan to bring the best out of the steel! In other words..Obsessed.

Thanks to TriviaMonster for some excellent reading in the seamountknifeworks article. Ray Allen, I would love to hear about your research. I have time to do some more reading.
I just waxed my car twice, so I guess it is time to move on to the Wife's car. I just don't understand why she can't relate to the art of waxing a car! Plus, I have a new Stephen Hunter novel to read - more great Bob-the-Nailer adventures. Then I can really concentrate on the latest formula for sealing wax. If there is anything I can't abide, it's waiting. :cool:
 
Ah, nice cuttysark. I love Stephen Hunter. Hard to go wrong with a Pulitzer Prize winner for an author. I like that Bob sometimes carries a nice folder, although he often goes for a Case, IIRC. Which book are you on?

What do you all think for the next one? I'm voting for a Madd Maxx base, 5.5" blade. I hope Darrel will start making texturing standard on the Madd Maxx too. I'd love to see an ETAC'ed Madd Maxx.

I just brought that up in the other thread. Funny. I would love a Madd Maxx, but in the 4" since MO's legal limit is 4". I wouldn't mind carrying a 5.5", but I prefer to keep it legal if I can since I already EDC a pistol. I wouldn't have a use for a knife that big, but the little boy in me likes the 5.5" Madd Maxx. It's a beast of a knife and I bet they carry supremely well with the deep carry pocket clip.

I vote for a Madd Maxx 4" or an AXD is my first choice with ETAC Alum. scales and a Ti liner lock to keep the cost out of the stratosphere. The steel will need to be Vanadis 4, which is M4 HS tool steel, except it is made for a non high speed application by removing some tungsten and other things. It brings up the room temp. toughness, hardness, and wear resistance to levels exceeding traditional HS M4. It is supposed to be an epic knife steel.
 
I'd like to see one in 3V, actually. But yeah, ETAC needs to happen on more of Darrel's designs. Colorado's legal limit is 3.5", so regardless, I'd have to open carry the beast. So I figure I might as well go all Crocodile Dundee on it, and have it be the 5.5, just for sheer coolness factor.
 
CPM 3V would be cool, but if Vanadis 4 is an improvement on M4's toughness. Here is an interesting tidbit, Vanadis 4 at 65Hrc is 4X's tougher than D2 at 59.5Hrc plus it's easier to machine and has excellent dimensional stability.

This steel is very high on my radar, and with a somewhat low level of carbides for this kind of performance it should take a razor's edge. I can imagine this steel derailing some very good steels due to the machine-ability, toughness, and the fact that it was designed for cold work tooling including knives. If the toughness of this steel proves to be what they say it should be a very good alternative to CPM 3V where a little toughness can be sacrificed for a huge gain in wear resistance. Even at 62-63Hrc we would see a very real gain in wear resistance over 3V with acceptable toughness for *most* applications and at 65Hrc this this steel will be a fine edge taking, ultra high wear resistance, ZDP killer with no chipping problems. The only turn off to most would be it's stain resistance which is about the same as 3V and M4. I know 4V is a viable alternative to Vanadis 4 Extra, but Vanadis 4 is already being produced by Bohler for knifemaking and is supposed to be somewhat easier to get. That and I just have a thing for Bohler steels.
 
We definitely are getting the s90V steel? I noticed alot of talk about other steels on the threads. The 90 was one of the major reason I jumped on with you guys! If someone cud confirm? Thx!!
 
No worries, the S90V is confirmed. HRC will be 60 to 62 with the upper range being targeted per Darrel.
It will be a real performer!

CPM S90V is absolutely confirmed as is the 60-62Hrc that Ray Allen stated.

Question though, how did you make it this whole time, including paying in advance, without knowing for sure what steel the knife was? Dang, we could have saved a ton of cash by going with some 420HC at a super nice 50-52Hrc :p

WTF man. That's just not cool. I don't think Darrel could make himself make a Gunny out of 420HC though.
 
I am really looking forward to what we can work out accessory wise for the GH's. I would love some cool flamed Ti standoffs, a Ti deep carry clip, or maybe even a CRK Sebenza lstyle standoff/lanyard spacer deal. That would be sick.

Maybe DDR can chime in about something like that. But, I would love a CRK Sebenza lanyard spacer deal to use in place of one of the standoffs with a dedicated hole for a lanyard. I plan on using a lanyard on mine.
 
3V blade 3/16" thick, 4.5" long classic bowie shape with a slight recurve. Tan anodize. Not a long skinny blade but a good stout one. I am ready 2013 forum knife.
Did I just wake up from a dream.
