The Patiently Waiting for the S90V Gunhammer Thread

Hi Steve! Glad you are in for this one! The new job must be working out for you!

Check out JK's forum - there is some stuff going on there - I could not pm you.

CPM 3V would be cool, but if Vanadis 4 is an improvement on M4's toughness. Here is an interesting tidbit, Vanadis 4 at 65Hrc is 4X's tougher than D2 at 59.5Hrc plus it's easier to machine and has excellent dimensional stability.

Typical C Si Mn Cr Mo V
analysis % 1.4 0.4 0.4 4.7 3.5 3.7

This steel is very high on my radar, and with a somewhat low level of carbides for this kind of performance it should take a razor's edge. I can imagine this steel derailing some very good steels due to the machine-ability, toughness, and the fact that it was designed for cold work tooling including knives. If the toughness of this steel proves to be what they say it should be a very good alternative to CPM 3V where a little toughness can be sacrificed for a huge gain in wear resistance. Even at 62-63Hrc we would see a very real gain in wear resistance over 3V with acceptable toughness for *most* applications and at 65Hrc this this steel will be a fine edge taking, ultra high wear resistance, ZDP killer with no chipping problems. The only turn off to most would be it's stain resistance which is about the same as 3V and M4. I know 4V is a viable alternative to Vanadis 4 Extra, but Vanadis 4 is already being produced by Bohler for knifemaking and is supposed to be somewhat easier to get. That and I just have a thing for Bohler steels.

I'm getting a chopper in V4E in a few months. Try to locate the steel for the knifemaker was the biggest challenge. I called every Boehler rep I could get hold of and my persistence paid off. I received the steel a few weeks ago and it was .4in thick! I requested thinner stuff but I was basically told "Good luck with that" and "you should be lucky we got it that thin). It might be awhile till we see it in a usable (.125-.187) thicknesses.

Oh okay. Thanks for the correction, I read that sheets in sizes less than 1/4" were supposed to be available pretty soon, but assumed they were since it was an older article. Interesting. Would love it if you would post up your thoughts here after you have a chance to play around with it it.

I am already sold on it, and I just saw a custom for sale here in the exchange running V4E at 62Hrc which is on the softer side, but he posted it felt like a harder 64Hrc CPM M4 when he was working on it.

I would like to get my hands on some as I find CPM 3V to be a bit too tough for knives like the Gunhammer. I know some people may flame me for saying that, but if I can trade some of 3V's extreme toughness for a steel that a good bit more wear resistance than I would be a happy guy. I only say this because even steels like ELMAX has plenty of toughness for a small folder, and V4E is much tougher than that, even to a bit of an extreme I am sure.

I think most forumites would agree with you. I really like M390, but would love to be able to get a copy of all my big folders in a copy made of 5160. I still buy knives in 5160 even though there are plenty of newer steels out there.

I've been sitting on the curb for over 2 years waiting for my 5.5" and 7" CUDA MAXXes in Stellite 6K. Until they come, I have to make do with my Talonite 5.5 and my S90V 7.

I wasn't trying to correct you as I just wanted to share my experience :) I will definitely make a thread about it.

Oh no, I appreciate it. I don't have that problem where I am right all them time haha.

I have always wanted to try a talonite or stellite knife, just didn't know where to start.

I am so jacked for this knife! I FINALLY dulled my S90V fixed blade Bowie tonight after lots of hard work and determination. It was just dull enough it was tearing paper. Stropped for a few minutes and it back to hair popping sharp. I'm in love with this steel and can't wait to have it in my EDC.

Agreed cpm s90v is awesome my para2 in s90v has been a game changer :thumbup:so I suspect this Gunhammer with darrel's heat treat to be even better:D it is by far my favorite steel. I really can't wait for this one:eek:

Did like everybody die or something? I feel so alone, so...cold.

I feel like I woke up in the HTM subforum and it's like 28 Days Later in here.

I am typing and I swear there is an echo...echo...echo.

Nice! I guess everyone else is just busy sitting and waiting patiently for their Gunhammers to arrive? I have the patience of a crackhead waiting on a new batch (batch of crack? Does that sound right?) to finish cooking.

Wow, took me a while to get that one. Fortunately, I'm really busy here, so it will actually probably be in my hands before I know it.

I check in - to see what is going on.

Patience is a virtue.

Getting new knives in the mail helps as well.

I have recently bought a hellrazor, ares, a custom 3v chopper, and a custom damascus. I also watched the Expendables 2. Fun movie just turn off your mind and enjoy the weapons. Lots of H knives around. Chucks my favorite. Loan wolf.

I was pretty sure it was S90V, there were a few numbnuts talking about other steels and it kinda scared me!
