The Puukko

Here's one of the old milk-protein plastic handles. I can never remember the name of it, or which world war caused it to go out of use because the milk was needed elsewhere.
The sheath was misidentified as American Indian work by the antique dealer.

Galalite Galalith is old material made from milk protein called kasein. It was quite popular material between 1920's to 1960's.

Thanks. I'll google it again.
In WW II production slowed. Still used for buttons. From Wikipedia, so must be true.

Actually, the material is called galalith. It was popular until the mi-1940s when bakelite came along. The problem with the galalith was it could not be molded, it had to be machined from existing stock. Thermosetting plastic such as bakelite and catalin could be cast, greatly simplifying the production processes and reducing cost.

Yeah. It's as galalith that I found it in Wikipedia. Also in large pieces it would warp and maybe crack. It has some virtues still that I've forgotten again.

Great job! FAR better than my first puukko crafting. I made one with a crown stag handle; it was too short and the crown stag really rubbed hard on my hand.
Yours looks long enough to be used.

Rich, that knife was made by Pekka Tuominen.

whoa!!! Awesome piece.

would you know if Pekka is still taking orders?

for those that are unfamiliar with Pekka Tuominen, he designed the Puukko folder for Spyderco and is a Master Bladesmith in his country

Ron
Sorry, but I don't know if Touminen is taking orders or not. Does he have a website?
Rich

He does but it looks dated. I sent an email to him (from his website) and I'll let you know if he responds

Thanks, Rich

FYI Pekka Tuomenin responded to my email. He accepted my order with 2 year wait. Fingers crossed.....

The email on his website is accurate

i visited his website and got all excited that Pekka would be at the NYC Knife Show. that's close enough to me that i could go!
