The Route #66

The pics in this thread are enabling me...again. Almost bought one of these a few times over the last several months. Good to hear they're still available at some of my regular go-to vendors.

May need to pick up a Northfield. I'm a sucker for lined and pinched bolsters and a fancy shield. A light user from the Exchange would probably work too, though.

Hmmmm.....decisions, decisions...LOLOL

I keep buying other GEC models thinking they will be a great user, but my 66 keeps ending up in my pocket. I don't think you would regret buying one and you might be surprised how often you end up carrying it.

I've considered getting one of these a few times but two things have stayed my hand:
1) the sheepfoot looks like it sits really high
2) the reports of lazy springs

I'd hate to buy one and just not like it. I wish the store/second/EDC models that are available were more discounted (I think they should be).

This knife was a wedding gift to me and my beautiful wife from the fine folks over at Great Eastern Cutlery. We stopped in on our honeymoon and she got to meet the wonderful Christine, as well as the man behind the operation Mr. Howard. They let us choose our knife from the displays they have in store and we truly got an amazing gift.

Fast foreward and guess what we find out? We are pregnant with a son and he already has his first knife! My wife carried the baby for 9 months and I’ve carried his knife, everyday, every appointment, every ultrasound and finally through the delivery I’ve had his knife with me.

She was a mom the second she found out she was pregnant and I had to wait to really be a dad, having his knife with me has given me the feeling that I was responsible for him too, even without him being here. I’ve kept the blade sharp, the joints oiled and the stag intact, hunting, fishing, everyday at work I’ve used his knife to give it some character and memories for him to cherish one day.

The blades are stained and the stag is smoother in places, the bolster show some wear now as well, but it’s ready when he is.

Great story. That will be a treasured knife for sure!

Here's my edc 66. It's not as shiny or pretty as it once was, but I sure do like using it. If it gets dirty and grimy I'll clean it up and it will soldier on.

Man does the ebony look good on these.

My phone camera sucks almost as bad as my photography skills, but I hadn't seen a blue camel bone 66 posted yet, so here's some pics of my light usage user.

Whew that's nice. I don't think I'd seen one of these.

B B.F.U I rather agree about the Sheep foot, I favour a low rider on Stockman. But you should consider a 66 Jack as a viable alternative.

Will Power Will Power

I had a #66 pen in red saw cut and really liked it. Some of the nicest saw cut bone I've seen, but I also felt that it was a better cutter / slicer than other GEC knives. Might have been imagined though.

I've been on a stockman kick. Maybe I'll end up with a #66 sometime, idk!

I have the same exact experience. I recently added a #54 big jack and #43 Oregon trapper to my rotation and as much as I love those knives I find myself leaving them on the shelves in favor or my #66.

There is a ton of cutting edge and overall cutting capabilities with this classic stockman blade combination in the small 3 1/2” frame. I just can’t seem to kick it out of the pocket. I’m going for a solid year of carry and at the end of September I’ll have reached that milestone.

I’m thinking of maybe doing a video, or review of field dressing, skinning and quartering a whitetail this year with my #66.

That red looks so nice...very deep and rich.

Trying to decide between this one and the hemlock green myself (I love its crest shield).
Shawn, definitely a tough call! I vacillated back and forth for days between those two with the blood red finally winning out.

I know this was posted a few weeks ago, but I just wanted to say that was a nice story and I love dark stag like that on your knife.

Awesome. Beautiful knife and beautiful story. I wish the three of you happiness and joy. It seems to me you already know the real source of it.

Thank you gentleman very much. My beautiful wife loves my passion for knives, I’m just hoping I can instill it in my young ones without forcing it on them. My son is going to his first Great Eastern Rendezcous this year!!!

I’ve seen more medium stockman knives pulled out and put to use over the years then any other pattern, it’s one that just works. Working fields, hunting hollows, thoughtfully whittling marshmallow sticks by a campfire, the little serpentine frames and glistening blades earn their spot in the worn out pocket of many worn out blue jeans and I know why when I use mine.
