MM,

You better be with someone who knows about the various flora and fauna in your area, like your dad, an outdoors kinda person, botanist, etc. If you're trying to eat all this crap by reading a book, you're gonna end up like Chris McCandless. That is to say, dead. He thought he could figure out plants from a book, too.

Not telling you what to do, that's your dad's job, but you are playing a dangerous game. I would say this same thing to any of the Scouts in my troop.

Doc

Agreed Doc, im pretty big on wild edibles, but i didnt even comment to his posts because im not talking directly to a kid ( no offense ) about wild edibles, No thank you. Too much can go wrong. I go on edible walk-abouts and all... And i still dont tell my own children about wild edibles yet, i dont want them thinking anything out there is edible until they are both older. Too many look-a-likes, too much risks.

Soooooo I got my worksharp in yesterday, gotta say it's one of the greatest things ever.
I'll make a thread about it later after I get home from work.
15 minutes to reprofile a blade to a mirror finish and shave with no bite.
It's absolutely phenomenal.

How's everyone?

Glad you had better luck with one than me!! I ruined a custom S35VN knife with the one i had... Well i say ruined but it was actually for the best since i ended up sending it to Terrio and he put an edge on it thats better than the edge the knife came with.

On another note i seen one of those old timey pedal powered wheel knife sharpeners on craigslist a couple days ago and was tempted to call the guy up.

Ouch really?!
My first time using I got a perfect clean and smooth equal edge on it with my cheap 20 buck chinese survival secret steel knife that could tree top hairs.

Granted I have the Ken Onion edition and got a bunch of different grit belts, here's a picture of what I did to my SOG Trident Ex-Tanto.
You can read of that edge and made it have a belly.

Sorry about the small image, base blocked photobucket >.>

Mars. Holds a better edge than moon.

Oh wow, with the current price of fuel the only thing i have ever experienced is moon rock, thats going to be one expensive piece when your finished :D

LMAO!!! Great answer, i got a good chuckle!!

Yep thats nice work there!!!

Work is going to be interesting today...... Oh well, as soon as I'm done, the little lady and I are off to the state forest for some camping. :D I also had a little sharpening therapy last night. The BK16 and BK4 are both up to par now.

Mars. Holds a better edge than moon.

Mars has great edge retention but I feel it's a little too brittle dpeneding on the Sun treatment and tempering, I'm more of a Jupiter guy.
All in all a good well rounded rock. :P

Yep thats nice work there!!!

I think years of free hand helped me out with it a lot to be honest.
It always has been practice practice and more practice.
I can't wait to put a convex on my BK9/BK2/ESEE 3 tonight when I get home from work, it'll be a nice show and tell thread.

Well, I'm glad one of us had great success with the WSKO their first time out. I practiced on a few chinese mystery steels and could not get a edge worth a dern on any of them. So, thinking that would be how it was gonna go with everything, the WS sat in the garage unused up until two weeks ago. I decided, seeing it sitting there getting dusty, I would brave the inevitable screw up using my 24, and wouldn't you know it, my 24 came out shaving sharp and I put its first mirror on it. Who knew it took some quality steel to get the results I had been hoping for from the very beginning with the crap steel? So, after hearing me boast about how wonderful the sharpener was, my wife said her 5 needed to be sharpened and that I should go sharpen it. I got a shaving sharp edge on that dern thing like it was brand new from the factory. I even got a nice mirrored edge out of it too. Oh and here's the surprise twist; I used the sharpening guide for the "kitchen knife, dull" on the 5. hahaha

I have the regular WS and the jury is still out. ...good edges, but it's hard not to round the tips, and I have a (sharp) little wave/bump on a few right at the start of the edge. I think I need to get some cheap thrift store steel to practice on as I've rid myself of almost all of my crap knives.

Have a good time man. Pics.

Haha! That's good to hear!
I absolutely love it, I even sharpened up a cheap 10 buck set of kitchen knifes to hair popping.
This is how I reprofiled all the blades, I hit it with the 120# (4paasses), 180#(6 passes),320# (6 passes), 800#(9 passes) 2000#(8 passes), 6000#(10 passes).
They're all ludicrously sharp.

Granit you just have to go slow and keep the edge perp to the belt, once the tip hits the belt stop the belt with the edge perp on it.
It's like using a stone, you have to follow the curve of the edge and be vigilant in consistency and accuracy.
Also go slowly when dragging the blade but no too slowly where the edge heats up too much or you create a massive bur.
About 1" to 3/4" a second drag, or at least that's what I do.

Good luck and keep practicing!
