The Survive! Never Say Die! Chat Thread

I gathered up a bunch of steel for a group shot today. My little 3.5 is feeling outnumbered! It needs a 5.1 companion for moral support soon!!! :)

Very nice, HK! Someone with a decent collection should start a thread about other knife brands that take up space in our safes and our hearts. As long as it isn't disrespectful to the subforum we're in, I'd be curious to see the knives that are valued by those who also value GSO's. I don't have anything that fancy in my collection, but from conversations on steel types and business models, I know many of us do!

Thanks fellas. I was kind of shocked when I got it all gathered up. I should have snapped a shot of the pile of sheaths! I started trying to do the math, don't ever ever do that!

Mehhh...
That collection is a little light on Survive!

Hahahaha. Just midding. Looks great. Lots of barkies in there. I had about 2/3rds of the Barkie models. 2 years ago, I sold all but my 3V barkie necker and bought a Specialized Stumpjumper 29 FSR and used the rest to aquire more GSOs. At first I had a little remorse. On my first trail ride it was gone. It changed my philosophy on knives and I started selling the ones I didnt use. I never added up my totals before then but it was THOUSANDS of dollars. I have been a more discerning buyer since then. I went through so many folders and fixed blades that I was able to determine what I really like in a blade and now I can look right at a knife and with 95% accuracy, know if I will like it, without even handling it. I think of it as an evolution in my collecting.

That's a good way to look at it, and kind of how I felt when taking the picture. The little 3.5 is at the head of that 'pack' of blades in its size. :)

I'm getting a lot better at looking at the specifications to get an idea if it will fit me. But you have to pay to play, so the saying is. If you look through my barkies, you'll see that nearly every one has been modified some way to suit me. I learned that I wasn't a huge fan of the steep convex grind on a lot of the smaller models. Swamprats, I had to go custom shop to get the RMD I wanted. Those two c/s models are very good however. I would love one in 3V to compare exact model and grind, take away all other variables except steel type.

I had to hack job so many models to get them to suit me that I was still looking for the 'perfect' knife. I learned a good while back there is no such thing, but the two survives! I've had are as close as anything I've had. That liten bror that I flat ground, though, is wonderful. It is a wicked slicer and great field knife for handling game up through deer size, and has a permanent home with me.

You're right about it being light on S!K's. I'm hoping it's going to look a lot better in the next year or so :D

The liten bror and Aurora are my favorite barkies. But... I sold them all because of the 3.5 and 5.1

The 4.5 is similar in profile to the liten bror/aurora. I might have to try one, I like how thin Guy is running it.

I have been thinking of it as an aurora killer. I was really active on the Barkie subforum of KF and used to beg for a .125 or .156 3V aurora. I parted ways with Bark River a while back and they finally come up with a .156 Aurora. And now I wont buy one out of spite. When I saw the GSO 4.5, I knew I had to have one. I havent ordered yet, but will be soon.

I'm in full agreement on this. The 4.5 has a much more practical design with the thin stock. I like that blade profile for field-dressing, too, especially making the initial opening cuts. I'm hoping for a blade geared to that task one of these days from Guy, but I prefer a 3.5" blade for that duty.

The gso 4.5 design with a 3.5" blade length and the option of ffg or slight swedge. And no choil (not even a sharpening choil). That would get my attention.

whew HK thats a very nice collection and great photo. It is cool to see what other styles people are into, being a member of a knife forum usually means you are into more than one brand (or have been). I love my survive knives and will continue to buy more but if i want a kukri or a large kephart etc etc you get my point. anyway very very nice collection/photo!

I remember this coming up before and our discussions on how the punisher had been portrayed in movies. Looks like his first entrant into the daredevil Netflix series has a trailer:

Yea, he hasn't been Shane for a very long time, but I agree. I kinda have a negative image of him in my mind that I can't shake.
