The Survive! Never Say Die! Chat Thread

Both do have their place and I enjoy hunting with both. Last time I hunted elk in Id I brought a Kimber 300WSM and a Marlin Guide in 45-70 with ghost peep for the thick timber. The little Marlin was joy to hunt with.

Riz good to hear your liking the Ruger so far.

The VTR .308 is a champ at 2-300 yards. Its really over kill here. Very seldom do you get shots over 100 yards in the piney woods region.

I usually take the mini 14 out for hog hunting. We've got a light and laser(just for fun). I prefer open sights at night, I typically shot better.

If I don't have the mini at night, I carry a Ruger semi auto in a .40 and a defender 12g. I might also swap the Ruger for a Colt trooper mk III in .357 mag.

That sounds like it would be a kick hog hunting at night Texas. Your VTR would do mighty fine out here.

Jon, what region of Idaho were you hunting?

Gotta be pushing ten years now. The closest town was Elk City. Not many elk. Saw some moose. Took a nice whitetail. Lots of wolf sign.

Hog hunting at night would be even more fun with my NVGs and IR laser!

Yes! I could go for that. Survivor trip to Texas for hogs sun or moon :)

Southfork of the Clearwater is beautiful. My dad worked as a saw filer in Elk City a long time ago. It's still like you describe, some good whitetail, a few elk, and lots of wolves.

I'm thankful right now they're not tearing anything up here at the moment. But the beer and grill treats are on me. Give me a month and I'll have my smoker ready.

If I ever get to where I think I can afford the trip I'd definitely hit you up for some spots TT. I'm about to go stir crazy here. Gets like that every spring. I've been working my backside off at home, but I'm ready to go chase something. Bear season won't be in full swing for a couple months with all the snow we got in the hills. Turkey will open on the 15th though. At least a guy can go chase them for a while and take the edge off.

That is what scouting and fishing is for. When seasons are closed thats what I do

Yeah I need to get down to the river and drown a worm or two. The smallmouth are starting to run and it looks like they've got some size to them. No way to do much for scouting, you're not getting around the hills anywhere here, unless by snowmachine. At least I got the studded tires changed off two rigs today though, so I hope our nicer weather holds.

Spring bear hunting? I thought the antis did away with that.

I don't know about the rest of the Union, but we're the last state out west where I can pursue lion, bear, coon and bobcat, all four tree-game species with dogs. I left Oregon when they did away with two of those. We now have an amendment to the state constitution that protects our hunting, fishing, and trapping rights by all traditional means

Smart state and you have the cohonas to pick up and move. 👍

The mountain lion hunt is one of those must do things for me.

I love chasing the big cats. I'm a predator hunter at heart. :) Mountain lion hunting is just one of those things you have to experience, there is really nothing else to compare it to. I've seen grown men that would not go to the tree after working to get one caught :D

My girl had her heart set on catching a lion this last winter, so we set in on it pretty hard. That pic in the trophy room thread is the cat she took.

I would love a chance! There is so few cats around here. People think they're non existent here but just not seen does not mean not here at all. I'm not sure of the laws here, now I'm interested. In some places I hike and hunt in west Texas have large cats, however nothing like you guys in the north.

I'm not sure what the f&g laws are there in Texas, but if you don't have access to dogs, or it's just not feasible to use dogs there for whatever reason, you could try calling one in. I call in a lot of coyotes with both hand and electronic calls. Here hand (mouth) calls are legal for calling lions, but electronic is not, so you'd have to check it out. Every season we have a couple of bow hunters kill lions while calling elk in September, although I think a guy would have to be pretty dedicated (and probably be mentally prepared to pass up a boat load of coyotes) to get it to all come together. I've tried calling for bobcats here a little bit, but I just cannot pass up coyotes when they come in :) and so blow my chances on the cats. But then I have the hounds to fall back on when conditions permit.

Scope arrived. I went with the 2.5x fixed. Its awesome. The gun shoulders and swings like a small shotgun. As soon as the scope hits my natural point of aim it appears to "turn on" and suddenly there isna crystal clear image with the crosshair perfectly focused. The focus is clear from what feels like 20 feet to objects as far as I have a line of sight from my windows. (600 yds). Standing in my basement slider I watched a robin land in the grass. I went from a high ready to shouldered while looking at the robin with both eyes open. The scope "turned on" and the robin was centered right in the scope. No searching what so ever! The robin then ran and took off. I smoothly tracked him until he was out of view. AMAZING. I then went to a window on the front of the house and from deep in the room aimed at a stop sign which is about 350 yards away. I had the rifle supported on the corner of a wall (simulating standing next to a tree and using it for support) and the image was crystal clear and I cpuld easily keep the cross hair inside of the 0 in the word "stop". I am sure I could drill that stop sign "O" every time, from a supported shooting platform. Prone will be nothing. I cant get back to the range until two weeks from now so it will be a while until I have a true shooting report. I plan on a 200 yard zero. From there I should be able to hold high center mass on a steel silhouette and hit it every time at 300. 400 will require a holdover. I am hoping that the holdover is right where the thin duplex crosshair meets the thick part or somewhere between there and the true center of the crosshair. That will only be firgured out with a perfect zero at 200 and then a lot of trial and error trigger time at 400.

Enjoy a pic of the setup

Looking good Riz. I'm gonna send you a bottle of Advil for that short barrel with the brake😬

That would make a pretty slick setup for still-hunting whitetail. I hear you on the scope--when I turn that 1.5-6 I have all the way down I can focus on the front sight blade. Don't need that very often, but when you need it, you need it. Very interesting design, thanks for sharing it.
