The unofficial, non binding, carries no weight, 2021 forum knife possibility discussion thread

Peregrin Peregrin I would not object to this thread being closed as it seems like it has served its purpose?

Honestly, I'd leave it open - one of us would simply start a new one as it gives us a place to discuss the knife. The bickering and such can be managed.

Heh, given that you know where I like to hang out, I'd find the entire thing amusing and entirely pedestrian. Some folks are acting like deep personal insults are being flung around because some other folks are seeing what's going on and have questions, which I find just flat out adorable. If nothing else, it certainly continues to keep this thread moving! :D

I have a pretty darned thick skin and I understand how online discussions operate versus face-to-face conversation. Still, it always raises hackles and ruffles feathers for some, whether the intent was there or not. Something I mentioned way back in the thread - GEC has never been a more contentious topic - I think it's never been more true.

Well, unfortunately, when something that's an opportunity to show fellowship with a group, also becomes a chance at a payday for some, this is what it's come to. I don't think we'll see an end to this until Bladeforums and GEC part ways on these Forum Knives. Buuuuuut, that's just my take on it.

This thread is serving as a useful outlet for discussion. Closing it would be counterproductive, I think.

On the topic of covers, I am a strong supporter of white bone, or a mottled appaloosa/white bone. Smooth bone covers are my favorite on knives (I am a HUGE fan of the GEC knives with colored camel bone) and a Barlow with such would put a big smile on my face.

If they use the same blade as they used on the previous run of 86s (which I can't imagine they won't), then it will measure roughly around 3" - a hair over, I think.
That's a real nice size for me. Im a sucker for single blade traditional knives that size.

It'll give us a place to discuss, cajole and continue the contentious comments.
It's amazing how the traditional forum knife brings out the worst in many folks.
It'll all work out. It has every year so far.

If I may...

From what I understand, the BF knife was basically created for the traditional folks. Correct me if I am wrong. Nicely, please. :)

The folks here are discerning and generally overall quite welcoming. I got re-interested in slipjoints a few years ago and decided to step up onto the Porch. It was a little nerve wracking. I read a lot before posting, I was new to slipjoints, and new to the Porch.

Reading was a must before posting...I see the Porch as a 10+ year recording of a country phone party line. It’s like a family here. But you can’t just jump on the line, you introduce yourself, read, listen, and post when you are comfortable.

Members have been accepting of me, which is fantastic. Even members I’ve had a squabble with are holding no ill will.

This is the Porch. People who love traditional knives enough to take things personal, whether intentional or not.

I trust the Traditional Area’s moderators to make their judgement call and will support it. I was chastised very nicely on my second post in the traditional section for posting a modern knife accidentally. Apologized and moved on.

It’s just knives folks...stuff you can’t take with you, and is moot in the grand scheme of things. I’ve never seen a hurst pulling a uhaul!

Remember the relationships that we have made here. And the BF 2021 knife will work itself out.

I’m blessed to have access to BF and to be able to participate. Ya’ll are great.

Keep the Porch spirit!

Edit to clarify: I was just stating the origin of the Traditional BF knife. Not saying only Porch dwellers should be able to buy it. :)

Yeah, I might need to rethink that line... :D

Seriously though, one of the most compelling things about this sub when I first sauntered in was the welcome. Despite some of my bone-headed questions and threads, the folks here still made me feel like I was part of the crew. I wouldn't mind seeing more of that spirit.

That's because you SAUNTERED in Dylan, you didn't crash in, throwing your elbows around going "Me, me, me!" and "I want, I want, I want!" :p I think folks are generally shown an exceptionally warm welcome here, but there's a difference between being invited to play on the lawn, and using it as a toilet  The posting records of some of the grabby folks speaks for themselves. When I first started posting here, it was the warmth and friendliness of other posters that made me stay, I didn't even buy that year's Traditional forum knife, as the process was already under way, and I didn't want to gate-crash. I love the knives, but it's the friendship that has kept me here. Avarice and greed are terrible things, and it's horrible to see them brought here by a small number of individuals. Every year, I look forward to The Porch getting back to normal again. I'm sure we'll get a nice knife, and hopefully everyone will be happy with it

Blue camel bone would be epic...

Jigged blue camel bone would be truly unique (never seen that).

Nice post buddy :) You should have been here in the days of 'chiclets', we've all messed up! :D ;)

Just to clarify, there used to be a modern BF Forum Knife, and a few other sub-forums have, I believe, also produced their own knives in the past. So, while folks keep referring to this knife as the Forum Knife or the BF Knife, it's actually the Traditional sub-forum knife :) ;)

I have seen many great suggestions for handle cover materials and I think anyone of them would look great with some gold glitter added.

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
