The unofficial, non binding, carries no weight, 2021 forum knife possibility discussion thread

How about a small, single-blade, easy-open sheep's foot or wharncliff. For old arthitic hands like mine? Example below.

I wonder will we see them again...those were the days...innovative.

I doubt we will, I'm afraid mate :(

Innovative is a good word. Sadly that's what made those such great knives. I'll admit I'm carrying last years more than any other except the 2013 (which remains my favorite), but that's due in part to the fact that I really like Wharncliff swaybacks (I have over a dozen including customs), not due to the fact it's special to me.

I have to say the old run up threads were definitely colorful...

It was often a rocky road, and I felt sorry for the volunteers - knife knuts are a pain in the backside to please at the best of times! :D I didn't always like the choice either, but those knives were special :) Considering the size of the order, and the prestige of the forum, it seems odd that we have to go begging, cap in hand :(

That is my understanding as well. If Bill can fit us in, he will tell us what pattern and perhaps we can vote on the cover choice. But that's bout all. It will be a take it or leave it deal.

Dave

I think everyone who is reading this and intends to buy an annual knife should stop buying new GEC knives to help free up some production space.
It's the least we can due to lighten their burden. Maybe if they had the available production capacity we could be choosers instead of beggars?

Or maybe I just over estimate the % of their business they can thank the hundreds of BladeForums annual knife buyers for month in and month out the rest of the year.

Yeah that's got to be it. We are probably just a blip on their screen. That and coming out of the blue like this, it's not like we try to do this every year or anything.

I can't relate...can't buy a new GEC if I tried at the moment!! :D Trying to get a forum knife direct for the first time here.

I purchased my first forum knife just couple of weeks ago from another member.

For me it's simple: if GEC offer a knife I like then I'll order a Forum Knife and look forward to being able to get a GEC knife without the current mania/hysteria involved ;) If it's a pattern I don't like I'll abstain and somebody else will have it.

I didn't buy the 2012 or the 2019 offerings because wasn't attracted to them, but plenty of others were  And plenty of others follow this formula too. Fail to see why the 'Forum' feels it has an eternal claim over GEC's operations, it is a company that sells out its products whether or not it makes a knife for Blade Forums (and given the insistence on a modest price ceiling I doubt they make much on it ) True, it can be a large order but then you can get people here moaning that 'outsiders' or unfamiliar faces are now flooding the project and diluting it or some such parochial gibberish. Recall that happening when Buck took on the project in 2018

The fact that there was a knife at all last year was a major triumph given the economic chaos and shuttering of factories. The fact too that it came from a non American source and is part of the current trend of Modern Traditionals is all due to the perseverance and courage of Mike @knifeswapper . Not because of some imagined powers or clout of the 'Forum'. Enough people liked it to make it viable, and those who didn't fancy it stood aside last year, simple. It will be the same this year- provided GEC will be able to offer a production slot.

I share many of your views, but my romantic side just doesn't like the reality of it all. The pirate in me says I should just shut up, make a few dummy accounts, buy all they will let me, and sell them for the ransom they can bring. The pirate in me is an a-hole, so I don't usually listen to him.

Ultimately I would buy gas station jarbenzas in camaraderie with you guys and gals, rather than the best production slipjoint with folks who are looking at this as just another knife buying opportunity.
But, that's just me and I probably shouldn't be so foolish.

I just hope when the worm turns, and it will, we are still here and we press every advantage we can when they need us more than we need them.
