The unofficial, non binding, carries no weight, 2021 forum knife possibility discussion thread

I would love to see a fixed blade this year! I think there would be more company options with that one in addition to it being something different.
On the folder front, maybe Albers would be a possibility if we were limited to one each???

I'm going to expand the idea I tossed out on page 3: Benchmade Proper with uncoated M4 blade, Dymondwood scales.
  • Proper - a tradition-inspired knife, quite popular, but not made in this configuration.
  • M4 - the benefits of a super-steel, but it will still patina like a traditional knife, and Benchmade uses it for other things.
  • Dymondwood - looks good, very tough, Benchmade uses it for other things.
I don't know if Benchmade has ever made club knives for anybody, but they do make dealer exclusives, including for DLT, a supporting dealer here (and one that hasn't gouged everybody in the GEC lollyscrambles).

@Jordan@DLT is this just crazy talk? Or can something like this happen?

I think when it comes to gec we will need to find a way to make it a practical quantity. Disqualify known flippers is one way. Someone in the gb&u thread has mentioned having recorded gec flipper behavior. Something else is to limit one knife per forum member, as well as qualifications (hopefully not too strict some have been here so long and others like myself have not)

The mods have a list.

i dont know much about benchmade or spyderco but i know that sal glesser has been active here at bladeforums so it could be a possibility. They have maybe a couple traditionalish knives. Maybe a roadie without a hole to please traditionalists.

I was thinking an MKM Malga with a different tool set (no fork) would be neat and... they are actually pinned together.

Two ideas come to mind, a Moose pattern or a Canoe for a folder, with a clip and and a spear point, and I like the idea of a fixed blade, maybe patterned after an old Bird and trout pattern. Too many patterns to chose from so that is an open discussion. Just a thought, and get Case to do it. I have been enjoying my Case Tear drop acquisition lately, with amber jigged bones, and then I like the heft and size of my Tribal lock too. I agree that while GEC are nice, the availability to potential buyers is a downer. I assume that the forum knife is open to everyone to get? Or to only paying members?

How about this idea, how about using a French pattern? It may not be American, but unique, especially an Aurillac pattern or a Thiers? And while still a nice design, I would have less interest on the Laguiole pattern.

Something that just occurred to me, (admittedly after I had posted a few times in this thread). Last year, iirc, this thread blew out with suggestion after suggestion and a few months went by. Then occassionally people would express alarm at the inaction, and them finally there were some inquiries and we got a last minute save, but not through any planning.

Given that we know potentially the same thing could occur this year, I suggest we should think ahead and set up some concrete actions and decision points with timeframes.

It might sound crazy but it might just work more effectively than having no plan at all.

If we ask GEC to do our BF "club" knife they might be amenable??!!
The 2019 Barehead Sailor's Rope Knife was pretty cool I thought!
What if they would do that nice big knife again, with a different blade, say . . . a wide, highly arched clip, easy to pinch??
Their grinds make good slicers, after you touch them up to your liking!
A single blade is much more reasonably priced than a double!
The handle could be Jigged, or Ebony, IMO.
Maybe they could retail them through their store, with paid reservations!!
A different marketing procedure, but the margin would go toward keeping GEC healthy! I am willing to bring this up with them!!

Great idea !

They have done 2 Forum Knives. Both were for their own Benchmade forum but they have done them. One was a BM850 if I remember correctly. The other was limited to 200 pieces of which I own #18. It was a BM705 with M2 blade steel and carbon fiber scales.

I think the idea of Benchmade doing a forum knife for use is a good idea and perhaps can be explored by whoever decides to take on this job.
This could be a backup if GEC says no to this year’s Forum Knife.

I know a guy who makes a pretty nice B&T under $150, but I don't know if he would be willing to make that many, since he's a 1 man shop.
he mostly works with tiger stripe curly maple - and could dye it a special color if that's a thing folks would be interested in.

I would love another forum knife.
I vote fixed blade for the "Traditional Folders and Fixed Blades" forum.
A real 6"-8" blade Bowie. A real belt knife.
